I am in my late 50s, a Singaporean whom has lived 6yrs in Hong Kong, 12yrs in Shanghai, 10 yrs in Macau and visited Taiwan many times. I love all these places. There are good and bad. Any person of Chinese descent should be able to find happiness living in any of these places if they learn to put their prejudices and politics aside. China is a strange mix of being ultra modern in some aspects, and being quite backwards in others. The important thing is not to go anywhere and expect it to be like where you come from. Just keep an open mind. As a Singaporean I was spoiled growing up in a very neat and efficient city and I brought a lot of prejudice and other baggage with me when I started living abroad. Don’t make this mistake and you will enjoy all the majority Chinese places in the world. In such places, you won’t be discriminated against for your race. The rest is up to you.

I once lived in Shanghai for two more years and travelled to some other Chinese cities during that time. I dislike the society of PROC. But after all, I think you have more wisdom.
@@Ceawei3388 Took me 2 yrs to get used to HK. The huge crowds of people at Causeway Bay on a weekend was scary and everyone was always in a hurry. Shanghai took more than 2 yrs before I felt settled in. It’s a city that 15 times larger than the whole island of Singapore. Working in Shanghai was bewildering. The cultural difference was huge. But I came to realize as I got older that it is easier to go to a place with a completely different culture like Europe, I will be open minded about the differences. But because HK and China for me have similar cultures - Chinese - then the little differences bothers you more. Example food: fried noodles, the concept is the same, but why don’t they make it like in Singapore 😄 but soon you get used to the HK or Shanghai noodles. Had you stayed past the 2 year mark, you too might feel differently.

@@therover65that’s a good perspective. If we go to the western, we subconsciously expect the huge differences, so we are more open minded and less annoyed by them. It might also be partially due to the history of the past 200 years, and we subconsciously think that western countries are more advanced, and if we don’t like the difference and their way of doing things, it must be our fault.
The first thing you look for when seeing China related review is to look for bias. The best way to detect bias is to to see how many times the CPC has been spoken or blamed instead of the government. Review of the vast majority of countries by foreigners usually refers to the government of the country as the "government", only locals will say specific administration or specific leaders. In China's case its even more obvious since the CPC is the government and there is no alternative. Why then do people like to emphasize communism and CPC or in most English language biased review is called the CCP? So far, this bias detection hasn't failed. This guy tried his best to be objective, and i do agree with some of his points. But the bias shows up, blaming CPC in many of the flaws and did not go to the root of the problem itself. For example, he blamed CPC for building big modern buildings while the interior is dirty or blaming the CPC for heavily commercializing new areas or tourist spots. the vast majority of the new shinny buildings in China is not CPC funded and instead of blaming poor property management to the property management company (mostly privately owned), he blamed CPC again. His observation of nice building exterior and dirty interior is mostly in 3rd tier cities and below, which is probably where he is staying. 2nd and 1st tier cities has evolved to have better property management and has very clean interior. Another issue is he is blaming the education system on the CPC. WHy is taiwan's building looking so old and drap? maybe they should take a look where all that money has gone to rather than criticizing the mainland for building new infrastructure? Mainland university ranked much higher than taiwanese university in international ranking and the mainland has far higher tech level than taiwan which only currently excel at chips fabrication. How can a lower ranked education and lower tech country blame education of a better performing country. Maybe its because taiwan is following too much of western education that it is falling behind when they got a huge head start in the 80s over the mainland. Conclusion, nice try, but too biased to be of any valuable information.
