If you don't understand the background of this dance, it's not easy to appreciate it. This dance is choreographed based on the famous Northern Song Dynasty painting "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains." At one point, the dancers' rising and falling movements resemble continuous mountains, and the towering hairpieces also look like majestic peaks. The lead dancer's expressions are very delicate, starting with calmness and ending in awe, as if gazing over the vast rivers and mountains and then slowly merging back into the painting, becoming still.

The dance is based on a famous Chinese painting called "Thousands of Mountains and Rivers," which was painted by an 18 years old artist in Northern Song Dynasty 1100 years ago. The painting is a national treasure and is still kept in good condition. The painting was projected on the screen at the end of the dance. The colors of the dancers match the color of the painting.

This talented painter passed away shortly after he finished this spectacular art piece. The dance is an excerpt from a musical about this painting whereas the mountains were personified by the dancers. That leading dancer represent the spirit of the colour which also is the name of this dance, -- a main mineral paint was used in the painting. In the dance, most of the time these dancers were looking down because the mountains that they representing are not pleased or saddened, they just silently being there, sure and strong, guarded our nation for thousands of years. When the leading dancer looked up, she was not look up to the sky, she was looking through the painting, looking through thousands of years and met with the painter's soul, with the resonance of our common belief -- we love and proud of the land that feeding and flourishing our people. I couldn't stop tearing during the whole performance as a Chinese. I was also touched by the incredible connection that arts brought to people, without restriction of time or location. Not sure if people without the cultural background would understand it.
This dance is talking about a very precious painting of China and the painting is about a landscaping of ancient China. This painting is so precious and famous because till now the green and blue colors of the mountains on the painting is still so bright, vivid and saturate. This painting is a treasure not only for Chinese but also whole world. So they created this dance to describe and also praise this famous painting and let people knows the beauty of this treasure.

This is talking about landscaping , mountain, land, sea, lake, etc.it came from a famous painting which a 18years old young guy painted for king of China.
The dance was actually choreographed in less than a month, but the polishing process took more than four months. There is very little information available about the author of "Along the River During the Qingming Festival," Wang Ximeng, only a few lines in his painting. Therefore, the dancers had to rely on the poetry and appreciation of the painting to understand him. Although they could not fully comprehend his work, they, like the author, strived for perfection in every detail of the creative process. Dance art does not pursue fluidity of movement but rather the meaning behind the creation. The dance expresses poetic sentiments and strives for quality and attention to detail. The creative process is always fraught with anxiety and pain, with no habitual movements. Every movement is practiced and polished. This dance was created for "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" and for the five thousand years of Chinese civilization.

Amazing performance, the music, movements, stage background... Impeccable. And the dancers looked as if they walked out of an ancient painting. Watched 3 times.
Some things are not on the same level between China and the world, such as food, but most foreigners don’t understand it. The culture of the pre-Qin period and some of the beauty behind it, for example, English cannot show the profoundness of Chinese.
Long sleeves are not a fashion statement. It was the traditional clothing of East Asian cultures or more specifically, Chinese in this instance. Face palm.

To be honest, I really really love this dance, but you guys' reaction about this dance is so awkward, I hope next time when you are going to do something similar with that do please do some research. I know there are huge culture differences in it, but at least investigating some context will help you to understand

Cultural exposure takes time, let's hope more people discover and then find their passion in an area of art they never knew before.
