Homebuilt Wa'apa sailing canoe built with local materials. This trimaran is 24 feet long, sails fast, is easy to paddle, and easy for one person to control. Foot pedal steering. Bamboo mast with polytarp sail. Sailing around the north part of Yap island in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Nice boat , I was reading a book call " Building Outrigged Sailing Canoes" and it has a full section on this Wa'apa boat you built. It was great to see it in your video. I am thinking on building one myself. Congratulations for your boat.

Did you fiber glass all the hull or just until the water line. Is hard to get epoxy in Honduras, just the polyester resin.

How did the Bamboo masts hold up in the long run?

I NEVER had a bamboo mast or boom break on me. Not even in a sudden storm. they last for years.

How is it wity no leeboard can you still go windward

There is a pivoting leeboard on the side of the boat. If you look closely at some locations in the video you can see the leeboard. It is about 4 feet long.

Went with trimaran for stability. At that time, I was solo sailing a lot. Did not want any threat of tipping over. Worked well for me.
