One huge benefit of knives with traditional Japanese handles is how easily you can swap their handle for a new one. 🪛
There are two common methods for attaching a Japanese handle to a blade:
1️⃣ Heating the tang - In this traditional method, the tang (the part of the blade that fits into the handle) is heated and inserted into the wooden handle. The heat chars the inside of the wood, causing it to expand. As the wood cools, it shrinks back and tightly grips the tang, locking the blade in place, creating a secure, friction-based fit without the need for adhesives.
2️⃣ Using glue - a strong adhesive is applied to the tang before it is inserted into the handle. This offers a fast, durable bond, often preferred for modern, efficient assembly. The glue ensures a tight and stable fit, providing strength and longevity for the knife.
