San Antonio celebrates the New Year with fun and fireworks, which were lovely. But the aftermath for dogs can be disturbing. The fireworks tend to freak out dogs and displace them as they try to get away from the booming noises. This can mean stray dogs lose their way, owned dogs bolt from their homes which results in a higher number of dogs in the streets than usual. We met with Katie Boggs of Katie’s Roadside Rescue (www.krrtx.org) and rode along with her to see the fallout of the festivities.

Katie has taken on another full-time job, her non-profit Katie's Roadside Rescue, but it is a labor of love….for the stray dogs in San Antonio. After only a few minutes with Katie, it was clear to me how devoted she is to this cause. It was my pleasure to spend time with her and see her in action.
We drove through some areas known for loose dogs and they did not disappoint. After having seen a handful, we came upon 2 roaming dogs that didn’t run when we pulled over. One was a rather scruffy white dog that had clearly been traveling through very muddy areas, the other a black dog with tan and white accents. They both were quite interested in the treats Katie offered. We were in a neighborhood and the question was, are these dogs owned? Neither had a collar or tags but Katie scanned both for micro-chips; the black one had one. Micro-chips only work however, if the owner registers the dog. So Katie contacted the micro-chip company and gave them the number in hopes of learning who the owner was. Typically they give her information immediately; however for some reason this time, they needed to investigate and call her back.
Katie heard from the micro-chip company who had determined who owned the black dog. She would be in touch with the owner and arrange for Kika to go home!
Kika’s owner’s niece had been in touch and our final stop would be to reunite Kika with her family - that is a success story! What we found out is that Kika had gotten out on Christmas Day when a family member accidentally left the gate open. Kika’s home was about 15 miles away from where we found her, and this was a week after she’d escaped. Thank goodness Kika was micro-chipped and she is now safe at home. Had she not been chipped or we had not found her, her future could have been a grim one as a street dog. This was a New Year’s Day reunion - I love happy endings!

A word of advice to those who are looking for missing dogs. When going to your local shelter to look for a dog or cat they will have pics in a book of the animals. If you go through the book and don't see your pet ask to look in all the kennels anyway. Our dog was in one of the kennels but not in the book.

Totally agree. Someone tried to break into sons house from backyard. When they opened gate they let dogs out(sons and ours-his dog was not picked up because it had a collar on). Long story short.... Animal Control picked her up. They obviously did not check for chip, (we were out of state) because she was chipped which bothers me even now. An Older Child took off her collar with identifiable tags on them, because while traveling wanted her to be comfortable. Learned the hard way, but child and a couple of family adults also learned; never take collar off especially traveling, even if chipped!!! I was not leaving! I asked where they place dogs they are just bringing in while giving a quick evaluation from a vet, etc. I also asked to talk to the manager of the shelter. Explained to her the same, showed pics and continued to ask to go in every room they had. They did ask if we saw her on their Facebook page which they use instead a binder. I knew she was not on it. I checked it before I got there. The Joke....she was placed on the page as picked up even after we had already taken her home. It did get corrected after I contacted them. A bit of concern in many areas. Prayerfully they do better. She was just where I thought she was. That holding room when vet checks them. She had never been moved. Poor baby very upset and confused. Not used to "jail" of any kind. We had already had our vet send us verification she was up to date on everything and even asked to fax not just to us, but the animal control shelter also so we were ahead of the game. We were out of there in no time. Also Always keep several updated photos in several different poses on your phone so you have them to share no matter where you may be. I also advise you to have a saved document of the medical updated info too. The vet may be closed when you go to pick them up. God Bless

In Europe when you bring your cat or dog (or farm animals) to the vet they will chip it and give a booklet called a animalpassport. And they will note all the medical info in it. Vacinations etc. The booklet you take home and bring for every vet visit when you go out of the country etc. So if your dog goes missing you can take the passport you don't have to call the vet for information.

Andy Mann : I phoned my local animal shelter day after day and was told they’d found no cat meeting my cat’s description. Then I got a call 6 days after he’d gone missing asking me to come out to the shelter that is five miles past the city limits. I found a way to get there. Walked in to the most foul smelling room, and instantly saw my cat! 🎉❤️🌟🤗😸 He’d been there for six days and was about to become the shelter’s property. They then had the right to euthanize him. He wasn’t popular with staff. They’d named him Lucifer! So happy to have found him. My love bug!! 😿🙀😻😼

Microchip and collars with contact info! My little chihuahua, Freya Rose, decided to take herself for a walk after escaping our yard. Some college kids found her several blocks from our house and we hadn't even had time to realize she was gone. They called the number on her tag and we had her back within a few minutes of letting her into the back yard. Needless to say, we found and repaired the spot from which she'd escaped.

I have two rescue dogs. They both came from horrible circumstances. Trust me when I tell you they deeply appreciate everything that strangers did for them. Now they have a family and beds, couches, hikes in the mountains, rides in the car, cookies and kongs.

The person filming just happened to have stopped filming and left before the little dog was reunited so all is well. :D This information came from the "World Animal Awareness Society" the poster of the video.

In the uk, it is law to have your dog microchipped. Although here, not many dogs are abandoned. Dogs are the nations most loved animal. America still has a problem with dog fighting etc. The government need to get on that.

There are 2 dogs homeless here outside of my house. Nobody wants to help them, Im so sad for one dog that is sick has minch or roña. I give food and water. I just adopted one who I found in the trash.I have another one and the rules of my place I can-t have more than 2 , I have already 2. So please help this dogs They make me very sad. I have call several places nobody wants to help. Is in San Antonio Tx.
