Aspiration occurs when stomach contents are regurgitated and then inhaled into the lungs, which can cause serious complications like pneumonia or other lung issues. When a patient is under anesthesia, their reflexes, including the gag reflex, are significantly diminished or completely suppressed. This increases the likelihood that if the stomach contains any food or liquid, it could be regurgitated and accidentally inhaled into the lungs. By staying NPO for a certain period before surgery-usually around 6-8 hours for solid foods and 2-4 hours for clear liquids-the stomach has time to empty, which minimizes the risk of aspiration and helps ensure the safety of the procedure.
