This explains alot. The reviews on this are mixed. I think its down to people not really knowing how to use the tool properly, getting frustrated and giving up. Once you get the hang of it, its a great tool.

I agree Ben, also using it for the wrong job, or with the wrong head. Neither of the guns it comes with are very suitable for small jobs, but they are available. Like every tool, it has its place and takes time to master.

@@FixitFingers Agree 💯 I just bought one today for multiple little jobs, the first one was staining. I spent a good hour playing around with the settings, spraying technique, disassemble and familiarising with the components, cleaning etc. I’m glad I took the time to do this because once I started on the job it was as if I knew the gun inside out, and the final result was better than I expected. Fence is next, and I will take the time to learn how it behaves with certain paints.

This the video I needed! Bought a 590 today, also because it came in a box. Post-view update: I'll only be painting a new shed (Hardi-flex) in acrylic, staining a timber fence and taking all doors off to take outside and give a coat of oil-based enamel. All indoor work will be brush and roller, especially after seeing this.

I just used the same sprayer and had some issues with splatter and too much paint. As a beginner, I hesitate to start with walls, let alone the ceiling. I did crown molding and looks great, but the prep work is intense. I will continue to use the sprayer until I master it because I love the time saved in the actual painting. Thank you for the video, I feel better now knowing we both struggle in our first attempt to spray. On a side note, your tip on using cheap table coverings is smart; I bought in the Home Center, a plastic that is attached to the painter’s tape for $16 USD (super expensive) and it was very difficult to use; my husband had to help and we both were very disappointed with this product. We will be using table covering tomorrow!

I was obviously a little frustrated during this filming but on reflection and looking at how good the ceiling ended up I am glad I got the gun and will continue to use it as it is a great machine overall. I saw that expensive masking sheet and passed as it was just a garage... a month on and I've managed to clean up most of the white speckles on my tools :P

I enjoyed the mixing of the humor with the paint! Yesterday, I unboxed a Wagner 2000 sprayer to paint some outside fences and laddice panels. I teach piano for a living an had to put most of my students on hold because of Covid -19. I am doing work for my landlord and one of the projects is painting. It did a wonderful job for me until I took a break for 20 minutes. Apparently, the sprayer got clogged and I had to clean it with soap and water. I noticed you added water to dilute the paint a little. I need to do this next time as well. i am a novice at this however, watching you made me feel not quite as badly. lol Besides the awful mess I made and the cleanup time I was pleased. Obviously, I need more experience with this unit. Thank you again for making me laugh. one of the music stores where I teach has a couple from England who manage it, and they make me laugh as well. TA TA!

Cheers Jeff! I needed to mix even more water with my paint and like Florida, Sydney can get quite warm too so yes, leaving the paint in the gun unused for a while not a great idea. I found the cleaning of the gun pretty easy with a water based paint. It takes a little practice but once dialled in you can paint fences heaps faster than a brush can. I've tried both and wouldn't go back to the brush again!

I'm a retired painter and have used different spray units. I also spray painted farm machinery in an engineering shop. You may get better as you go. You would have been better spraying horizontally instead of up the bricks and onto the ceiling. You are also spraying with short movements of your arm instead of longer passes. I noticed people mentioning splatters. This can probably be fixed with adjustments on the spray unit or paint viscosity. Hope this comment helps.

I've had a couple of Wagners (diy versions) and they both have issues with clogging. They work great out of the box but I never get it to work s well again. Either the nozzles are not clean enough or the paint isn't sucked up from the container or it splatters .... ...and yes - I think I clean them properly.

@@FixitFingers I only happened on this vid by chance but it prompted me to have another look at my 2 wagner sprayers. I ran some water only through one and the spray looked ok. I then ran water through the 2nd one and you could see it was splattering a bit. so I pulled the 2nd one apart and had a closer look with a magnifying glass. Bugger me but I could see a couple of hairline cracks in the tube that is near where the paint exits the nozzle. That might be the answer to the splatter although why it has cracked is another question. It hasn't been used much and never left in the sun. Oh well. I might junk that one and just use the remaining sprayer. It seems to work ok provided the paint is diluted to the right consistency (and that's the subject for a video by itself)!

Would Wagner Flexio W590 model be suitable for solvent based, viscous pliolite masonry paint?
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers Жыл бұрын
Oil paint it can do yes, but cleaning is a pain so I only use water based. Also any paint needs to be thinned, so naturally viscous paints are not recommended as they clog up the machine. So while I'm unfamiliar with the paint you've mentioned, my gut feeling is no, I don't think it will work well in this sprayer.

Great video. I just purchased the same sprayer and also a complete novice with sprayers. I took on a task of spraying walls in my Granddaughters bedroom. I had to primer / undercoat to cover a darker colour 1st. I found that the paint splattered and left gobs of paint on the surface and also the nozzles kept clogging. The paint was quite thick and I did try diluting it by 10% but to no avail. I think I will dilute more next coat. I will also be doing the ceiling and will make sure that I dilute by 15 to 20 percent with this. I will be undercoating 1st. I did the walls 1st, not sure if that is the correct order, as I thought it would be easier to drop sheet the walls and protect them from overspray when I do the ceiling.

If you are getting splatters also try turning down the paint flow and/or increase the air flow. After a few uses you'll start to get a feel for when it's working properly. Good luck! 👍

Thanks for the video, Masking is a real pain in the butt with spraying but for a big space or new build it is worth it over rollering (which I hate). You seemed to get slow coverage with that sprayer. The Wagner I've used would have covered that ceiling in maybe 5 minutes x 2 coats. You should have sprayed the wall section horizontally too that would have been quicker. I would put tarps over everything to avoid the speckling you got.

@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers 2 жыл бұрын
Start to finish, learning to use it, prepping the garage and ceiling, masking, painting and cleaning, basically the whole day. Mind you filming adds to that too :P Call it about 6 to 7 hours. If I was to do the job again now 3 years or so on and what I've learnt using the machine in that time, (and not filming :P) I reckon I'd have it done in 3-4 hours. With all the tricky surfaces and pipes and such in the way, I reckon a brush and roller would be 4-5 hours for me, so a reasonable time saving there.

I should really do a followup to this video. In this one, I was literally learning as I went to show these guns are not as straight forward as the 'official' marketing makes them look. I'm about to paint a feature wall in the bedroom, and damn straight I'll be grabbing a roller. However, I also painted two 'slatted' privacy screens at my brother's house. One I only had brush and roller... it took all day. Next weekend I came back with the Wagner, I was done in 2 hours. Like every tool, it has its place and uses, but is no magic bullet. I think I might paint the rest of the rough brick wall in my garage, half with a roller, half with the Wagner. Now I've had some more experience with it, it will be interesting to time everything and see how it actually stacks up!

One also needs to take into account that the Flexio 590's nozzles are 4.1mm width fro the ispray and 2.8mm width for the standard. Spraying latex would be fine but for thin varnishes one would need a 1.5 nozzle to get a proper varnish lustre, for which this kit would be unsuitable - sadly. I had my hopes set on it.

G'day Martin, I honestly forget what I used back then but this is my current technique of dialing it in: Start with the air flow high and the paint flow low. Dial up the paint and dial down the air a small amount at a time until you hit a nice balance of coverage without huge amounts of overspray. Generally, thicker paints need more air and lower flow, thin oils need lower air and higher flow. I hope that helps.

Hi. Would you dilute the paint more than 10%.?
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the paint (and temperature). For the thick ceiling paint I used, definitely. That would have helped stop the splatters I got. For a thinner water based paint, 10% is probably good. The colder it is, the more dilution needed too. It's one of the drawbacks of the machine that you need to muck around a bit to find the right flow rate for the best result. With experience I'm sure it'll get easier. Good luck! 👍

xD really painful to watch. But the resume is spot on. It's a tool to practice with to figure out paint thickness and settings. Paint+prime in one is the worst case pretty much. Did you manage to use it again with thinner paint and other settings without white dots everywhere?

My second try was with decking oil, so the other end of the spectrum. Super thin and at first I had it turned up too high....chewed through the stuff 😂 Looked awesome though and super fast. Finally dialing it in these days, though I still only spray outside on smaller things, haven't done another room with it. Definitely takes some experience to get right, but great results once you do.

@@FixitFingers I'm tackling a room for the first time. I covered to whole floor and so far there are no marks anywhere. I'm using a wood laquer on water basis (don't know if that's the phrase, barely able to tell the German words apart :P), which I feel is right in the middle of the viscosity scale the machine can handle. I'd assume that's the best case, so I'm really grateful for reviews! :)

As this was my first attempt using one I didn't want to cough up for the extension right away ;) The paint was a 3-in-1 ceiling paint... not as good as a proper primer, but for a garage ceiling it worked fine. 3 years on and the job is still good. no peeling :D

Yes I've used it a number of times. I reoiled my brothers slatted privacy screens at his place which was 3x or 4x faster than I'd previously done it by hand. A few smaller projects too like the plant wagon I made for my wife (kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4HSgGuHnrp5b68). Usually it only comes out for bigger jobs or fiddly jobs as the extra clean up means for smaller things brush and roller is usually faster.

I am using the job to buy a better painter though, as I am tired of filling the 1 quart cap out of a 5 gallon can...... just get a feed line painter and bypass the extra work....lol.

@@FixitFingers One thing to watch for outside is blowing dirt on your work! I was painting some galv tanks a while back and didn't think about that. Why all the splatter? Air to paint adjustment or poor quality design sprayer? PS - you never put back on your ear protection.
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers 2 жыл бұрын
G'day Kev, firstly yes, you really want ear protection with the unit, it's quite loud, I got distracted filming. The splatter is mostly from user error being the first time I used this machine. I have since learned how to better control the air/paint ratio, my friend Ains does an excellent video on how to dial this in. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoC7qa2ridB-h5Y) Secondly, it is all about keeping the nozzle clean. Keep a wet rag with you and EVERY time you stop spraying for more than a few seconds, wipe it clean else the paint buildup causes that splatter. For the right job, this guy is a great unit. In my last video I was building a boat deck. First coat I had to apply with brush and roller as it was raining outside... took over 3 hours. Next day was sunny, 30 minutes for coat 2 using this sprayer. I charge $50ph, so it almost paid for itself in one job.

As a first time user learning the tool you are probably right Sam. Though there are pipes in the way and other odd shaped bits that would have needed a brush too. However now I've had some more practise and experience with the machine if I did it again I reckon I'd do it in half the time and twice as fast as brush and roller. Catch 22, takes time to learn so if you only have one project, you don't need this tool. If you'll be painting regularly (or a fence! ) it's worth learning.
@peterwright4467

Love your video and honest opinion but that was the wrong tool for that job, the sprayer is too heavy, much quicker with a roller and a brush. keep videos coming well done great music
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers 3 жыл бұрын
Yep I don't think I'd use it on a ceiling again for exactly that reason Peter, it is heavy when full. Wagner do sell a ceiling attachment but you'd want to be doing a whole house for it to be worth it, and for that size job there are better sprayers on the market than this DIY targeted unit. The exercise did teach me a lot however and since then I've done a few jobs that took me minutes instead of God knows how long with a brush. Not an essential tool by any means, but useful in the right application.

Sorry, I should have told you to cut back the volume of paint first to stop splattering. I think too much paint and not enough pressure will cause splattering. .Start adjusting the volume first before you add anymore thinners or water I hope this helps

@@eduu2 I just did my second big job with it, and taking what I learnt here it went really well. @@FixitFingers ok ok ok.lets get relistic. first,spraying creates overspray.dont listen to sales talk.they get paid to tell you want you want to here.second,you get what you pay for.cheaper sprayers will create more overspray than more expensive sprayers.reason is the droplets that come from the cheaper sprayers is more larger than the droplets from more expensive sprayers,hence more overspray and more uneven surface.the pressure to put paint through the system needs to be at least 110 bar.having used wagner sprayers for 5 years now i kinow that you need to buy somthing like the 150 pro control,250 and 350 sprayers.having used a 150 control sprayer it outshines wagners cheaper heavier sprayers and after doing some MDF storage units for a friend,we were well happy with the results.by the way you need to spary 6 coats of paint to obtain a good finish.2 coats of water based primer then 4 coats of water based top coat.i used "leyland" primer and dulux trade "diamond eggshell" for the top coat.very smooth and no MDF fibre's on show. remember no short cuts or you will be dissapointed.

Cheers mate, very solid advice. It's been a while now and over a few uses I am happy with the value of the 590. I did two slated outdoor privacy screens recently, one with brush, one with the Wagner and boy! It really shined, ridiculously faster. I did perhaps expect a bit much from a $200 machine, but after some more practice and as a hobbyist I think it's not a bad option. Cheers! 👍

If I was to do it again with just the ceiling or any single basic flat surface, I probably would (and in fact did in a video just the other week 😉 ). However, there are a ton of pipes, nooks and crannies up there that would impede a roller and require going back with a brush so there would be complications with it too. This was more a learning exercise for me on the tool as I was curious to see how they went. These days I like to use it on outdoor and complex surfaces. I would not recommend it for a one-off DIY paint job but ongoing it has easily paid for itself in time saved.
