It’s June 23rd, 2023. The social media pages of Private Military Company Wagner start sharing a video about what they called a rocket and artillery strike on their camps. However, the PMC, which was involved in fighting with Ukraine on the Russian side for almost the whole duration of the conflict, adds a shocking detail. The strike was allegedly authorized by the Russian Ministry of Defense. Wagner mercenaries are currently recovering in their training camps in the occupied Ukrainian Donbas Region after the devastating battle for Bakhmut. The camps where most of the mercenaries are located were out of the reach of the Ukrainian military, so according to the Wagner chief, Yevgeniy Prigozhin, the Russian Ministry of Defense deliberately started destroying its now former allies.

@@Tryharder69420I believe that it was very possible for him to gain popular support if he reached Moscow and took the tv stations. Also with direct control of Rostov Don he had the weapons and supplies that was going to the front lines. No clue if he would win in the long term but he would have been successful in starting a civil war and perhaps a larger mutiny in the military.

The people being recruited from prison were largely shock troops that were only there to soak up lead and artillery fragments. They were not operating things such as manpads/artillery/ armored vehicles. Their objectives were to form waves of meat and continue to walk toward the enemy (exposing enemy positions) for the actual pmc troops in the back to clean up. It was a very well documented tactic of Wagner at the time and very few prisoners made it back to Russia with their “freedom papers” and the few who did wound up killing civilians and wound up back in prison.

The work you carry out here is incredible. With the constant stream of footage and information coming out of this war it is really difficult to conceptualise and understand what happened beyond 'x happened in this town' or 'fighting was reported here and there'. Your visualisations are invaluable to see how the units moved, with what and where; also showing the clashes and even sometimes down to what weapon systems. Really great work.

I think the reasoning behind Prigozhin's decisions was caused by a lack of options - he realized if he kept going, he'd basically win the war for Ukraine and start a civil war in Russia. He needed to reach an agreement with Putin as soon as possible because he still considered himself to be very much on the Russian side of the conflict. So he accepted a deal that put him in a worse position than he had before the coup purely because he didn't want to be remembered by historians as the guy who sparked a revolution against his buddy Putin. He may have even known he was signing his own death sentence at that point and sacrificed himself for what he considered the greater good, but I personally think he was too much of an opportunistic, unscrupulous businessman to die for his country. He probably just miscalculated the risk, trusting Putin more than he should have.

In actuality the reason Prigozhin turned around and had no chance of winning was because of the various military and paramilitary units stationed around Moscow which did not participate in the invasion. From ODON (also known as the Dzerzhinsky Division), to the Kremlin Regiment, 154th Preobrazhensky Commandant’s Regiment finally, the Semyonovsky Lifeguard Regiment (which has tanks and armoured vehicles), alongside various reserve and national guard units. In reality, these troops number more than 30,000, which is 6-10 times bigger than anything Prigozhin’s forces numbered. The coup was doomed from the start, and not only that but also the entire Russian airforce and whatever reserve forces of the Russian military would have crushed the uprising anyway.

@@hoantran041975 Those military formations are positioned within Moscow alongside some National Guard troops, it is a huge doubt that Prigozhin would have moved from Rostov to Moscow fast enough to overpower those units (which outnumbered him by at minimum five times). They had a very strong defensive position along the Oka river and their forces virtually had no supply beside what they had on hand, if they had pressed on it is almost certain they would have been repelled or run out of equipment or ammunition to keep going. To get from Rostov to Moscow is hypothetically possible, but even the slightest of delays would have doomed the plan, had they actually attempted to press through military forces along the Oka river (south of Moscow) it would have taken at minimum a day to beat off whatever forces could be assembled. Even then, there were tens of thousands of armed police and National Guard troops (OMON, SOBR, 604th Special Purpose Center "Vityaz" etc.) While it isn't technically impossible, the chances were heavily stacked against Prigozhin and would have required a total collapse of resistance by the troops on the Oka river, which stopped Wagners' advance and doomed the rebellion. It's also important to remember that only 8,000 Wagner troops participated in the event (according to British intelligence) with only 4,000 troops bound for Moscow itself.

I can't say I blame him, at the end of the day while he's in charge of his forces, his orders come directly from Shoigu and the MoD, and he's obviously questioned orders so many times and been ignored, it would send any man crazy to know you're willingly throwing lives away (lives a PMC company can't exactly spare). I feel Putin couldn't feed Shoigu to Wagner, because he has nobody else left who is deemed competent enough to lead.

I think he was banking on more of the regular Russian generals joining him and supporting the coup. When only a few did, he realized his march didn't have a long future. Without more of the regular army supporting him, at most he'd only temporarily occupy a bit of Moscow before getting pushed out and executed. That would have helped Ukraine because it would pull some troops back to Russia to fight Prigozhin, but it would have ended badly for Progozhin. He took the only lifeline he had once it was offered. Putin was thinking "oh shit this coup thing is getting too far" while Prigozhin was thinking "oh shit the coup isn't going far enough". So both were looking for a way to back out.

I honestly think wagner troops just got tired of been used as bodies to be thrown in to battle at bakhmut. Prighozhin probably promised them if they can capture bakhmut they will be free( since alot of them are former convicts/inmates ) and after bakhmut defense ministry was probably just gonna throw them into more meat grinders at other part of ukraine. That is probably why it all came to a sudden stop so randomly and having it brokered by Lukashenko (out of all ppl) thus ending their involvement in the war to save their own lives. Not saying Prighozhin and wagner is the "good guys" in the rebellion but sending that much man to the graves over bakhmut has to have some mental toll, if not on Prighozhin atleast on the junior officers among the company. We also dont know how much control Prighozhin has over wagnar, wagnar could of rebelled anyway without him and maybe even have him killed for breaking his promise to them and Lukashenko's offer is the best of both worlds for wagnar and putin. The common soldier will have to be pretty angry or pretty stupid to agree to and try a rebellion like that and just ending it all the sudden. Its either that or Prighozhin just wanted to coup de ta at the mod only? (like putin will just allow his subordinates to do that) or this is just a cover up for wagnar to invade ukraine and Kiev from the north, which is possible but to suggest russian command to have that much brain after what we have seen in this war is kinda unlikely.

This proved not only that they can't defend their own land, but also that many would be unwilling to do so. Not only that, but that a mercenary group and prison conscripts can humiliate the Russian department of defense it doesn't take a full country to do it. Russia can act all big and tough in someone else's land, but in their own land, they're small and pathetic. They have to keep attacking other people to 'look' stronger than they really are. And they're doing a piss poor job of that, too.

Man! Prighozhin was in position to seize Moscow and either take power outright or at least divide the loyalty of the nation and all of its most important officials. He positioned himself to divide the power structure of Russia and push Putin out of power by making him irrelevant as the Army was not even capable in dealing with Ukraine while the RosGvardia (Putin’s equivalent to the SS, which works hand-in-hand with his Gestapo the FSB) froze in indecision and in the realization that it was too weak and unprepared in terms of both training and equipment to stand up to an actual military level force of veteran fighter who would roll over them with ease. He really blew his big chance. He had the manpower, he had the equipment, he had the loyalty of his man, he had the support of the public. And he balked at taking power for himself.

I think Prighozin was genuinely pissed and wanted to shake things up. Putin couldn't easily get rid of Wagner because they manage a lot of interests in Africa, a major source of income and political influence. He also was probably grateful for them as they haven't done too badly in Ukraine. Sending them to Belarus is a way to save face and de-escalate the situation. The timing also co-incides with the Ukranian counteroffensive, which seems to see Russia in a more passive, defensive role, not the type of thing Wagner are particularly useful for. Maybe in September we will see Wagner and more conscripts return to the front lines.

It should also be remembered that rarely in Russia does anyone get liquidated right away. That's a very easy way to create a martyr. Instead, they are "forgiven" and relegated to some harmless role for a few months or years and then, once everything clears and everyone forgets about them, are they killed off or sent to prison or into exile (where they may also be killed). The state never forgets betrayal, especially since Prigozhin publicly denounced the war effort and the Russian army in a video before the insurrection. He is a dead man walking, unless of course he's incredibly useful to Putin. But once he isn't anymore his days are counted.

This last speech was enlightening with regards to the current situation in Niger. As for the motivations, as Perun has said Prigozhin never had the means to force Putin to do anything, as he can simply fly away further. He probably hoped he could talk sense to him, and Putin probably knows Shoigu is a safer ally even if incompetent.

The most likely explanation for the end of the coup was Proghozin failed to capture the top Russian generals at Rostov-on-Don. He may have been able to take Moscow and the MoD, but he couldn't hope to hold it against a concerted counterattack that would surely come. The only remaining option was to stop and broker a deal.
