Must be my favourite opera! Back when I was really obsessed with it, I memorised the whole of act 1, and was lucky enough to play the first violin part in a performance of Act 3 shortly after. I could list some timestamps, but honestly the whole thing is a masterpiece, and it makes me sad that people ignore this one so much.

Wagner himself thought that "Siegfried" would be the most popular part of the Ring cycle. Which didn't proove to be the case. It's clearly the "Walküre". I also have a soft spot for this opera. However, it's the hardest to perform. I'm not a fan of this Boulez version. Many parts are too rushed and also the cast is rather uneven.

2:25:36 the birdsong is so damn beautiful. It's been 2 and a half hours of rather grimy, if fun opera: everyone so far, mime, alberich, siegfried, wotan, fafner are all variously mean, grasping, stupid, cowardly, duplicitous, arrogant, spiteful, and above all selfish. It's been a lot of fun! But still, grimy. So suddenly something pure, transcendent, innocent, untainted is very refreshing

1:03:46 What is the motif in the horns derived from? Wotans frustration?
8:05 Maurice: _Stevens? What do you think you’re doing?_ Chris: _What do you mean?_ M: _You know exactly what I mean. Das Rheingold's one thing, but if you think I'm going to subject myself to the whole Ring of Nibelung, you're sadly mistaken._ C: _All right, Maurice. The thing is, something the matter is…my voice._ M: _What, you got laryngitis or somethin'?_ C: _Somethin’._ M: _Okay, well, if you want continuous programming, we've got the greatest musical comedies in the world staring you right in the face. But I want that Kraut off my airwaves. Do you understand me?_ C: _Yeah._ M: _All right. Good. Play some show tunes._ ’Northern Exposure’ (1990): Season 3, episode 21 ”It Happened In Juneau”
