as a member of the original cast of this opera ballet and a former member of two major ballet companies I think the choreographer did what this dramatic scene required as a fantasy. Norbert Vesak a wonderful choreographer of major works in major companies. Not to be compared to dance in dance companies whether contemporary or classical ballet.

My sister was in the original cast of the orgy ballet. She was an extra dancer and 15 at the time. We went to the 1/17/78 performance and it changed my life. Thanks!! I was 12 and loved it.

Magnifico este pasaje musical en el que el caballero Tannhauser es tentado para caer en la sensualidad de la Corte de Venus pero Tannhauser saldra adelante como veremos mas adelante.

What most seeing this for the first time won't understand, is everybit of this is choreographed and well staged. This was the first opera I saw at the Met.

Does anyone know the year of this production? I remember watching it in the late 70's with my then-small children. They were both five or under and totally entranced throughout the production.

Oh puhleeeeze! This is about as risqué as the Golden Calf scene from DeMille's 1956 Ten Commandments. You should've seen what LA Opera did with this - they had naked guys boinking each other, right up on stage fer cryin' out loud!!

A pity the Met Op couldn't afford a lighting engineer.
@schneisi6 жыл бұрын
My Father made the lighting , for Camera , its not the Met's or my Fathers fault who uploded this in a miserable Quality , Get the DVD then you can se the real blilliance of this production.

Children understand myth, archetypes, symbols, and visual metaphors on visceral level. The opera is presented on multiple levels. Have you seen this production? Have you studied child development in an academic setting as well as raising children yourself? If so, you know that blanket statements about suitability concerning art such as this production are meaningless.

The Pope in Mexico yesterday rebuked that country's Bishops for gossiping. Along the same lines, the MO should act more professionally. The director of the Met Chorus should have shut the fuck up and not gossiped to the New York Times about his pathetic opinion re. James Levine. The whole affair smacks of ageism. Levine lead some great productions in the past year. 73, big deal.

Mr. Michael Blackwood before you critizise this production . You should read Wagnerd Libretto, this is my Fathers Set Design Günther Schneider-Siemssen, done with imagination fantasy ans hard Work , with projections and the best technical Tools the Met had to offer. Before you critizise this , come to Europe and you will see Toilets hookers and pissing clowns on stage.

I love this production. I danced in this originally and re set the ballet for decades when it was returned to repertoire. Old production but beautiful. Those who go to classical ballet companies should not go to the opera to see the same kind of choreography.

The dancing seems a bit... well... let’s say old fashioned. But still better than the dreadful children’s theatre set design. I suffered a lot watching this stage, just as in the Schenk Ring. No room for any kind of fantasy or even imagination. Pity.
