I didn't read through all of the comments, but I wanted to add this tidbit that I figured out when I installed my BitLCD and it didn't work yesterday. After much troubleshooting, I finally switched the ends of the USB cable from the BitLCD and Legends arcade unit and that made it work. You want the ferrite bead end of the cable plugged into the BitLCD.

Can you go over the top 3, frequency and my score options? They don't seem to do anything. Also do you lose animation if you unplug your bitlcd? Flashing firmware again fixes it, but it is annoying. Several others have confirmed this behavior. Easy way to check is with the start up animation.

Hi Chris, I don't think those options do anything -at present. If you unplug the BitLCD, you won't lose the marquees or animations as they are stored on a USB stick on the BitLCD. Not sure what you mean about the flashing the firmware again, please elaborate on that part.

@@WagnersTechTalk This is an ongoing problem for me also. I see you listed it under troubleshooting on your page but has a fix ever been implemented? I flash BITLCD firmware after rebooting every time for the videos to work. Controller also comes on with the two blue flashing lights so I have to hold down p2 for 7 seconds. I have not updated to Firmware v5.70 because I read of people having issues with Coinopsx. Thanks for your time.

I cant install the bitlcd app. Every time I do, it fails, saying "Error transferring (longweb address) - server replied Not Found. Do I just need to wait for them to fix the server, or did I do something wrong?

I've honestly not tried using the BitLCD over OTG, however I think the answer is yes you can. At the back of the BitLCD there is a small switch that can be set for USB or HDMI. After flipping it, connect your HDMI cable to it and to your PC. From there, I think you can set it up as you want using it as a DMD.

I've not personally tried it, but there is a small switch on the back of the BitLCD that will let you just treat the BitLCD as an external HDMI display.

John, I love the detail you go into with your videos, but have you thought about one to address the failed firmware updates. I followed your directions to install the BitLCD, the BitLCDx software, and updating the firmware. I even received a message that the firmware update had completed and to wait a while for the BitLCD to reboot. However, nada, nothing. And now I only receive a "AtGames and No Signal" message on the BitLCD upon a cold boot. Additionally, the software is unable to communicate with the BitLCD for any further FW or Resource updates. It says to check the cable. The only recommendation from AtGames so far is to complete the process as you mention with the fw image file on the thumb drive. I have tried 4 different drives all with fat32 configured, and no resolution. And yes, I waited for the firmware to update and complete. I had gone to a different room and was watching a show, came back to see the update had completed and walked away again thinking it needed more time to reboot. I have seen other comments on a FB group of the same issue with some experiencing it multiple times with replacements. Help!!!

There is a hardware switch at the back of the BitLCD that will allow switching to the HDMI input. I've personally never used it without the ALU connected. The tricky part will be getting the Pi to display the marquee images, I'm sure it's possible but it's not something I've personally tried at this point. I've not had many ask how to do it.

I have a question about the contest can I simply put a short 30 second video on a flash drive play it on the bit lcd and submit that to the contest?

I'm not on the panel for this contest, so my answer here may not be correct. You will want a video that is 1920x360p displaying on your BitLCD, something custom and animated. You can animate your family name, i.e. 'Wagner's Arcade' or something to that effect with your favorite artwork/video footage moving about. If you don't already have a video editor, there are several free packages available. One that I've heard great things about, but haven't used myself, is DaVinci Resolve (link: www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve ). There is a free and paid version, select the free version and it should have all the capabilities you could want. Set the project for 1920x360p and start creating. I'm sure there are plenty of YT videos to help get you started with it as well. After doing this, record a video (30 sec. or less) showing it on your BitLCD, tag the video on Twitter and you will be entered. The goal with this contest is to see what you come up with, based on my understanding.

Just finally picked this up from the NOD sale, today. I already had the BitPixel panel. Glad you demonstrated the two working together. I'll definitely do that. Maybe I'll put the BitPixel below the control panel, and of course, the BitLCD in the marquee location. Hopefully, the BitLCD will automatically display content when I play the CoinopsX, the same way the BitPixel panel does. Thanks for sharing this. :)

Got my BitLCD today. Installed it on my 1.1 version ALU but had a problem where the machine would freeze on startup with the two blue LEDs flashing next to the power button on the ALU. I tried the P2 button for 7-10 seconds trick. That made the blue lights stop flashing but the ALU is still frozen. So removed the BitLCD USB stick, same issue. Also removed my Coinops X USB stick from the ALU but same issue. Unplugged the power from the BitLCD but same issue. Unplugged the USB cable from the BitLCD and same issue! Argh! I finally through trial and error found what the problem is: It is the USB hub that ships with the BitLCD. If I have everything from the BitLCD unplugged and just have the USB hub plugged into the mainboard with only the ALU USB plugged into the hub, I still get the freeze so that is the issue. I tried another USB hub but same issue so removed the USB hub altogether. So next I tried to use the 1.0 version install by routing the USB cable from the BitLCD directly to the external USB 3.0 plug on the front control panel and tada! that works. Not the ideal install since I have the unsightly USB cable coming around from the back but at least I'm in business. Hopefully this also helps others that may be having a similar issue. I'll open a ticket with AT Games to see if they have a better solution.

I only tried fat32, exfat may also work but not 100% sure. You can view the common guide on my site to use pi imager if needed for a larger card.

Currently, yes. Once a firmware update is available that supports HDMI input, it would work with other devices (PC, Android, etc.) However, to update the BitLCD firmware, you would need a Legends Ultimate (or other supported device at the time the feature was implemented). At present, only the Legends Ultimate is supported. In the future, some of these may be (not sure): wagnerstechtalk.com/guides/#AtGames

Thanks for another great video sir! I ordered two BitLCDs on the prior NOD sale...one for my ALU 1.0 and one for my ALU 1.1. They should be arriving in a couple of days. Based on your video, I will not be disappointed. Really like how they made it much better integrated with the ALU with the power splitter and USB hub compared to the BitPixel (which I have). While I've really enjoyed the BitPixel, the BitLCD is a huge upgrade with recreations of the original marquees and ability to do animated marquees. One thing I'm worried about though is how to get the new firmware....it isn't being pushed to my ALU/ALP yet, so may have to download from web site and flash locally.

The firmware update won't be available until at least Monday (last I heard). I'm using a staged firmware that isn't public yet in this video. Once AtGames releases it, you'll see it in the Version tab that an upgrade is available.

Hi Wagners TechTalk Thanks for the great video. I had reach out to AtGames Support about my reservation order as of Sept. 3 2021 and ask them when I can purchase my BitLCD reservation to complete it. AtGames Support responded with a purchase link to me and completed it and I will receive my BitLCD. They never really explained what happen but I was looking for a email to complete my purchase every day but nothing. Thanks for your help.

@games really knocked it outta the park, just got my ALP, after adjusting the audio, haptics, its sounds and looks amazing to me, the stock sound and even the joystick haptics are fine to me but I appreciate all the hardwork our Canadian friends are doing with backglass and audio upgrades, their riser has saved my back on my ALU!

Totally agree, love the BuyStuffStores Haptics kit, the guys up north do an AMAZING job! I enjoyed working with them on the guide and hopefully we'll be able to do something similar in the future. It is a massive upgrade for the overall vpin experience. Loving the BitLCD too, it's funny I catch myself looking up at the marquee while playing in awe at the image and not scoring as well as a result lol Focus Jon... focus.

Thanks for the video. I just installed my bitlcd as per the directions and when I try to load bitlcdx on appstorex it reads flashdrivex has not mounted. I am using a brand new 32GB PNY 3.2 usb and made sure it was formatted fat32 and I even tried another formatted usb. Does anybody have any idea what I may be doing wrong?

If you're talking about the USB stick on the ALU itself, have you tried formatting the USB stick using Flash Drive X (FDX), mount it and then install the BitLCD application from AppStoreX (see here wagnerstechtalk.com/al-bitlcd/#Update_Firmware_and_Resources )? Of course, you also need a USB stick with the images on the BitLCD itself as well. The guide at the link above has much more info.

Thank you for responding, my bitlcd doesn’t seem to recognize any usb that is in the usb2 slot. I tried formatting and mounting it on the cabinet and it downloaded bitlcd but I was unable to update it because there wasn’t a usb in the usb2 slot. Either I’m missing something or usb2 slot isn’t working. I am getting lights on my stick when I plug it in however.

AtGames responded and I was able to get the BitLCD running. I had to do some additional steps (maybe because of an update). I’m including in case anybody else has the same issue. Hi Chris​topher, ​ Good afternoon and thank you for reaching out to us. I can gladly assist you with this matter. I have provided you the below steps to set up the flash drive and put both the update and resources on the flash drive from a computer. While it is a lot of steps, this should get your flash drive all setup and you all good to go. Please let me know how this goes. BitLCD Flash Drive Setup Steps 1: Please confirm that your ALU's Firmware is up to date on 5.67 or later 2: Please ensure you are signed in on your ALU and have successfully installed the BitLCD application found under the AppStoreX tab. 3: Once this has all been completed, please power off your ALU and If the flash drive is in the back of the BitLCD, please remove it 4: We will now take the Flash Drive to your computer to prepare it. 5: Please plug your flash drive into your computer 6: We will be using Raspberry Pi Imager software to erase and format the Flash Drive as Fat 32. 7a: If you have a Windows PC, please download Raspberry Pi Imager from the following link: downloads.raspberrypi.org/imager/imager_latest.exe 7b: If you have a Mac, please download Raspberry Pi Imager from the following link: downloads.raspberrypi.org/imager/imager_latest.dmg 8: Once you have downloaded and installed Raspberry Pi Imager, please launch it. 9: Under "Operating System", select the button that says "Choose OS". Scroll down until you see "Erase" and select it. 10: Under "Storage", select "Choose Storage" and from the popup please select your Flash Drive from the list. IMPORTANT: Please Make Sure You Select The Correct Flash Drive You Want To Format For The BitLCD. 11: Please select "Write" and from the popup please verify everything is correct and select "Yes". 12: Once the write has been successful, select "Continue". You may now close the Raspberry Pi Imager software. 13: We will now download the "bitlcd_update_online.img" from the following link: wagnerstechtalk.com/files/atgames/bitlcd/bitlcd_update_online.img 14: Once it has successfully been downloaded, please take that "bitlcd_update_online.img" file and place it on the root of the Flash Drive. 15: We will now download the BitLCD Resources from the following link: wagnerstechtalk.com/files/atgames/bitlcd/BitLCD_Resources.zip 16: Once downloaded you will need to unzip/extract the file 17: Once it is unzipped/extracted, you will now have a folder named "BitLCD". Important: If the folder is named anything other than "BitLCD", please rename it to "BitLCD" 18: Once you have verified the name of the folder is correct, please take that "BitLCD" folder and place it on the root of the Flash Drive. 19: Once you have successfully placed both the BitLCD update file and the folder on the root of the Flash Drive, please properly eject the Flash Drive from your computer. 16: We will now take the Flash Drive and with your ALU powered off, we will plug the Flash Drive into the BitLCD. IMPORTANT: Please make sure the little switch is up closest to the USB port 17: Once the Flash Drive is plugged into the BitLCD, you may power on the ALU. If upon powering on you receive the flashing blue BT pairing lights, please hold down the P2 button for 7-10 seconds and this should take it out or BT pairing mode and turn the lights off. 18: Once Powered on and you have been successfully signed in, please head to the AppStoreX tab and launch the BitLCD application. 19: Once launched, verify that the BitLCD is properly working. 19: If not, please go into the BitLCD app and go over and select "Update BitLCD" 20: We will select "Update BitLCD Firmware". If at any point it fails, please try again and even power off and back on the device. 21: Once successfully updated, you do NOT need to update BitLCD resources since thay are already on the Flash Drive. Please note that this process may take some time. Please let it run and don't interrupt it 22: Once this successfully completes, you should now be all set to enjoy your new BitLCD! IMPORTANT NOTE: If the above steps still fail for you, please try a different/new Flash Drive as some Flash Drives may have issues properly reading. Thank you, AtGames Customer Support

I got my BitLCD installed 2 nights ago on my 1.2 ALU. But in the morning I got the dreaded "controls not working" NG on my MCU + NG on BT inside Settings > Health Check (page 3). I was also not able to unplug the power leads on my LEDs? Is there a trick to remove the LED mini plug from the board? Finally, I replaced the PASSIVE USB Hub that comes in the BitLCD with an older powered D-Link USB hub. Result: My ALU's controls are once again working! And no NG in Health Check.

I'm not sure what you mean by the LED mini plug. The BitLCD has a power and USB cable that gets connected. I have heard from a few that have had to replace the hub also.

@@WagnersTechTalk Hi Jon! In your video around @5:15 you unplug the original LED 'black and white wire' connection from the main CPU. My LED cable seems "stuck" I couldn't get it out. I wondered if there is a safety tab on it I need to depress? Like the tabs you sometimes find on MOLEX connectors? PS: I did use your guide to install, Thanks so much! 😎

@@makingmusic2971 Ah gotcha, yeah I unplugged that about a year ago and left it out. Can't recall if there is a safety tab on it, there may be. Try Pinching on both the top+bottom and see if it comes out then. Sorry, getting older and can't remember some of the details lol 😎 Happy the guide was helpful, I always prefer to have a video and written guide for new tech. Just makes everything easier, I think.

Is it normal for it to not sit tight and flush? Ive installed the mounting screws as far in as they will go, and the marquee has slight gap at the top. Even worse, the thing wobbles/rattles when I touch it. I used mounting pattern 1. I could get mounting pattern 2 to work at all

I'm using an ALU 1.1. Am I supposed to leave the original marquee attached or something? If so then how am I supposed to run the cables inside the cabinet? I don't understand why mine doesn't sit completely flush. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't for the fact that it makes noise and can move around a few millimeters.

You would remove the 6 screws from the original marquee. Then install 3 in one of the two patterns shown in the instructions (or the guide page: wagnerstechtalk.com/al-bitlcd/#Installation_and_Setup ). It won't be super-right, it will hang there like a picture frame but perfectly across the top. You can slide it up to remove it.

There is a small switch at the back that will enable HDMI mode. Flip it, then connect your HDMI cable in and you should be good.

There’s no option to update the BITLCD firmware or install 1st party images on my machine. Not sure why, I’m logged into ArcadeNet. Also, I was missing protective plastic on mine so maybe it was used and then returned. Argh, don’t know what to do.

I did the install and as an FYI...unless I did something wrong. for my 1.0 I had to connect the power splitter outside the cab. the splitter did not fit the inside power port. I also had to heat up the glue holding my original Marque on to get that off. Just some tips for any 1.0 owners, the instructions a a little different foe us. 😉

Jon, do you know how to make a "default" image/animation for the BitLCD. On the old BitPixel, we would have to use the Pixelcade software on a PC to send a GIF/PNG (either static or animated) to the device via USB. This would work whenever the Pixelcade software wasn't running on the ALU. Is there a way to do this for the BitLCD?

Hi Raskull, I've honestly not tried to create a default image. This might be something to ask in our influencer thread with AtGames. I've not really had a need to change it, but I guess it might be fun to have your channel logo or something like that showing instead.

Just wanted to add, sorry if I missed it. If you plug your old Led into the extra port on the LCD included usb hub it works and frees up the front one. So you can hang it on the wall or something.

Thanks Bruce, I did show the BitPixel plugged in with the BitLCD but was using the front USB 2.0 port on the ALU. Very good point about using the internal USB hub. I appreciate your feedback!

so this has been a bit of a mess - so anyone w/ a 1.0 know how to install the AC splitter? It's too big to fit into the port on the inside - this video shows two ports but 1.0 only has 1 and that splitter does not fit

All right, so I figured out a work around on 1.0 - you can plug the ac splitter into the back of the control panel, then plug the bitlcd cable and original ac cable into that so there's only the one cable coming out the back still. Atgames the suggested method is to plug the splitter into the back but that's too many cables hanging out the back imo

No, you'd need the LBPA board for that. The power is being distributed to all connected devices from a single source. You could add a power switch in the loop though or use a WiFi power switch that is voice controlled. Some have mentioned they use that too.

It wouldn't fit "in" the Legends Pinball, it's wider than the backglass. Also, I've personally only used it with the Legends Ultimate. However, the ALP does have a BitLCD app. so it should work, just that you won't be able to mount it physically in the machine. Mounting on the wall may work though.

There are two different applications, BitPixel is for the BitPixel/BitPixel HV and BitLCD for the BitLCD. I was able to run both at the same time on the ALU. Very welcome!

@@BlueLusterROCKS It's pretty easy, just create a new project 1920 (width) 360 (height), fps is up to you 30-60. Then add your assets to the timeline and animate as you wish.

It works with CoinOpsX, when you see the arcade marquees towards the end of this video, that was while CoinOpsX was running. At present, there isn't much artwork available. The artwork shown here was an early version. Community artwork packs for CoinOpsX will be available soon, there is also a link to the Pixelcade forums at the bottom of the Resources section of the guide that has some great artwork created by JamesT. We'll likely see more packs and some with video also in the near future.

My lcd went kaput. Followed tutorial. When its supposed reboot phase of firmware, it blinked and never restarted...was left alone for an hour for reboot and nothing. Powered cycled, starts then says no signal and shuts off.

Great video and very informative. I was wondering if you've played much with animated marquees? I know this product is very early in its software implementation so it has limitations on what it can do. The issue I've found using mp4s is that they do load properly but not before showing the ugly default image first and since it automatically loops the video file it will show this default image on every loop start. Do you know of any way around this currently since I saw in this video you had the same issue? I could add my own loops to lessen the occurrence but doesn't really solve it.

Thank you kindly! I think if you take a still/.jpg of the first frame of the video with the same name, the image will show before loading the .mp4. I've not investigated in detail, but good chance it will do what you're asking.

@@WagnersTechTalk Tried this out and it does indeed load the third-party image before playing the video. This should suffice for now since this solution does remove the default image appearing but it also loads the third party image again prior to every video loop start so the cycle appears to hitch. A possible workaround could be to fade to black between loops but I'd prefer to avoid that. Hopefully we'll have some more options with this device down the road.

I’m running 5.62 and extremely worried about updating firmware and it breaking coin opsx. Is a firmware upgrade required for this to operate correctly? I can see bitlcdx in the App Store currently

Yes, a firmware upgrade will be necessary. Also, the latest firmware has some advantages when it comes to CoinOpsX. EDIT: I originally stated the 5 login requirement would be removed in this release (5.67) and verified with AtGames this morning that the restriction still exists in this firmware.

Hey there! I learned something interesting and quirky. The existing marquee for Local Streaming needed to be copied and named to match the computer connection name. Once that was done, it worked correctly!

I just got my BitLCD today and it was working perfectly at first. When I went to update firmware the screen went black and doesn’t work anymore. And yes, I had a USB 32GB formatted to FAT32. This sucks! I waited 2 years for this and this happens day 1. Multiple people have the same issue on FB ATGames fan page. The update will break your marquee! Why did your work and ours didn’t? I’m so pissed off at AtGames!

I installed/reinstalled the firmware no less than 5 times on my unit, multiple firmware versions installed also (5.65, 5.66 & 5.67) - no problems. I recommend contacting AtGames customer support at : www.atgames.net/arcades/contact . If it's an issue I've not seen nor can reproduce, I'm not going to be any help at this point. I'm sure AtGames will take care of the problem, regardless.

That’s so strange. I had everything up and running perfectly. Had the Marquees displaying on the games and went to update firmware and the screen went blank. Nothing I have done has fixed it. I did put in a ticket with AtGames. Hope they come through. I don’t think I’ll ever update again with AtGames.

IMO - I always update. When you get up and running with the BitLCD, I recommend updating. At some point there is going to be a firmware update to use the HDMI port (most likely). If there is a problem, you want to get it fixed while it's under warranty not after. Just my $.02.

Thank you as always for your informative, easy-to-follow tutorials. You may or may not have heard about the usb hub issue regarding its connection to the ALU 1.1 control panel, but I've had my BitLCD for a couple months now, and I'd say 99% of the time, the control panel buttons/joysticks won't work. The 1% of the time they do work is when the Bluetooth lights are flashing by the power button, and I can disable the Bluetooth by holding the P2 button. I've tried using a generic USB hub, I've bought powered usb hubs...nothing seems to fit the issue. I've opened a ticket with AtGames, but I'm not sure they can solve this issue. Do you have any ideas or suggestions?

Hi Corey, I've personally not had this issue but there is one thing you can try that might help. It's not at all the same issue you're having, but a good way to start fresh incase there was any file corruption somewhere. See the 3rd point here: wagnerstechtalk.com/al-bitlcd/#Troubleshooting . If that doesn't help, I'm not sure what else it could be (likely something hardware-related) and would recommend getting in touch with AtGames on their support page through the purple chat icon during their normal business hours.

@@WagnersTechTalk It's been determined that I need a new CTR Board. They're going to provide an invoice for a replacement. Apparently there have been others that have had to replace their CTR boards, which seemed to fix the problem. Hopefully that will be the case for me too.
