A little shunting operations, train bumpers, train side buffer gear, wagons coupling and decoupling with DB shunting locomotive series 212 (ŽFBH series 212), at Mostar freight station.
Video starts at Mostar passenger station by electric locomotive ride to locomotive depot Mostar. There, the electric locomotive is left and the diesel shunting locomotive is taken. During locomotive ignition and starting, a ŽFBH Talgo train passed by. Then there was a locomotive ride to Mostar freight station where it was necessary to do some shunting work. During the ride, there was also a deck passenger on the locomotive, a large grasshopper stowaway.
Several empty freight cars were moved to rail weighbridge, where the car's weight is measured by train weighing scale. Then these wagons were moved to industrial tracks for loading scrap metal. Along the way, the process of measuring the wagons weight and performing shunting, coupling and decoupling operations was shown.
The action takes place on the Sarajevo - Čapljina - Port of Ploče railway line, in South Bosnia and Herzegovina. The rides on this line is featured in other cabview videos. The complete shunting work was performed with a German-made diesel shunting locomotive, which is quite rare in these areas. After the work was completed, there is a return locomotive ride to the locomotive depot in Mostar.

Thank you for this nice video. It gives the impression of being in a time machine when in urban areas. The couplers between cars are not automatic, and seem to be somewhat flimsy. In North America (Canada, US, Mexico) cars couple automatically upon contact, and bolts are pushed down with a long tool to lock the coupling. Noted the writing Bosnia Herzegovina in a different language. Reminded me of history and geography in school (not in North America), when they were provinces of Yugoslavia.

In most of Europe for wagons, but also the old passenger train carriages, the hand hook is still used. The manual hook is used because it is considered much safer than the automatic hook used in the USA, Mexico and Canada. Despite this, there are types of automatic hooks such as the Scharfenberg hook, but they are used for passenger trains which have a much lower weight than traditional wagons; but it is never used for freight trains. Bless

@@senorlopez2564 Thanks for the info. Locomotives placed in the middle (Distributed Power Units, DPUs) of 2 mile (3.2 kilometer) long double-stacked intermodal freight trains relieve some stress on the couplers, but failure of the couplers (broken knuckle) with separation of the train into two parts is a common cause of emergency stoppage.

@@senorlopez2564 "The manual hook is used because it is considered much safer than the automatic hook used in the USA, Mexico and Canada." Considered safer by whom? Chain couplings have the significant disadvantage of requiring a worker to step between the cars for every coupling and uncoupling. I can't see any safety advantage at all in chain couplers.

@@tzadik36 "The couplers between cars [...] and seem to be somewhat flimsy." European trains are _much_ shorter and lighter, so the couplers are plenty strong enough. I suspect they're used because train weights don't require knuckle couplers. And it's worth noting that knuckle couplers (at least as used on North American freight trains) aren't fully automatic, as somebody still has to connect up the air lines for the brakes.

Its hard to believe they use those old fashioned couples, those went out in the 1800s.

Your view depends on which country you're from: in most parts of the world the manual coupler is the preferred method of coupling on freight trains: they're stronger and more reliable. Automatic couplers tend to be kept to passenger trains, where speed and convenience are more desirable.

Bruh. No need for knuckle couplers when your train's only 20 cars long. And knuckles still require somebody to go between the cars to connect the air lines for the brakes.
