And this shows what the concept of planned obsolescence is all about. A critical part, subject to pressure and lots of friction, made of very cheap plastic. They can make it all metal or a harder better quality plastic but then...it will not fail and the washer will last a long time so less people will replace them and it will mean less profits for them.

Thanks for the video. I just took my Maytag Centennial washer apart and brought these parts to my local appliance dealer/repairman. He said the teeth looked fine so the problem was likely the transmission and would be very costly. I put the same parts back on and made sure the nut was tight. No more grinding. ZERO COST REPAIR!! Thanks again!!

Honestly your Repair man is right! A Transmission can be for this model is usual 400 to 475 for the Repair. He was probably trying to save you money! Look for oil and leaking underneath. If you see oil , usual a sign for a new one. Also would need a belt probably with the Repair.

Thank you so much for this video. I had the same noise and I went to go look at everything and the nut had backed off the bolt on the pulley and allowed it to drop and disengaged the clutch. so I didn’t even have to replace anything. I’m 3 loads in and everything seems fine! 🎉 this saved me so much bc I’m a broke single mom of four kids and I can’t afford a new washer right now.

Fixed my washing machine today because of this video. The kit he refers to / links to from Amazon is actually pretty bad quality. I spent an hour or so messing with the splutch. Once it was in place, the gear would not shift. I eventually went back to the original parts as they weren't broken or worn down. I added a bit of the grease that he mentioned and reinstalled. Gear shifting worked as expected. Once everything was in place, I put the machine back, hooked it up, and ran a Normal Wash cycle. Worked perfectly. Thank you for this video!

Thank you. The first video showing the clutch/splutch actuation. My Maytag was leaking water and needed the gearcase. After reassembly it made the loud noise during the wash and the rinse cycles when the clutch was not engaged. I should have greased the splines and checked clutch travel. The "experts" videos did not show this. The parts are not expensive so I should have put in new when the gearcase.

@@DuctTapeMechanic I used a 1.67mm thick 12mm small outside diameter stainless steel washer to shim the gear away from the clutch. got it from the local Ace Hardware. I had a 1.22mm thick washer but could still feel the teeth rub when the clutch fully disengaged. A new clutch kit may have prevented the problem with the new gearcase.

I had a hair get into drum seal and that let a small amount of water to leak and that got into bearings. Binding bearings can make the trans fail to shift and that eats the clutch plastic teeth. The Centennial uses bearings that are not serviceable and the drum support/gearbox is spot welded sheetmetal. Service guys will quote the trans and clutch due to the high failure rate of the seal, especially in areas where water is hard and deposits shorten life of the seal.

Thanks for the video. My Kenmore is only 5 yrs old and the grinding noise started. Thought it was the washplate but couldn't remove the bolt with a ratchet. Called an appliance tech who couldn't remove the bolt either so together with my impact wrench and his adapter got the washplate removed, it was fine, he was baffled. He consulted with fellow techs and concluded it is the gearcase and the cost to replace that is more than half the washer value. I don't know if it IS the gearcase or if it's the clutch.

I would take off the clutch and reinstall it just to make sure it is installed correctly (also is a good idea to grease it). If that doesn't resolve it, i would replace the shifter (it is possible that it is not shifting fully plus a new one is only around $20 on Amazon). Also, check to see if the transmission shaft has forward and backward play by pulling the transmission pully back and forth. If it moves a lot, then your transmission is bad and you need a new machine. Hope this helps.

When my drum spins it sounds like ball bearing skipping or grinding. Not that plastic teeth clicking sound you made. Would this be in the transmission and do you know if it is openable to repair / grease or replace ball bearings. My agitator post wobbles a tiny bit and shakes the cabinet some. I replaced the shift switch because it was not spinning. It spins now and does a full cycle but it shakes and I am worried that it needs more fixing. Saw this vid after fix and wish I had greased the gear mechanism. Also forgot to place belt cover. Tipping it over again ... 😂

My same machine is making the same noise. A great video and easy to follow, however, my clutch assembly looks completely fine with no wear. Could this noise be the cause of a bad transmission or shifter actuator?
@DuctTapeMechanic
@DuctTapeMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
A loud metal grinding noise definitely could be a bad transmission. Most of the time this type of noise it is a bad clutch (sometimes the arm gets stuck halfway between shifting from agitate to spin). I think you could get the clutch and the shifter both for about $50 total on Amazon. I would do that first because a transmission is too expensive to replace.
@angiecarlin5091
@angiecarlin5091 2 жыл бұрын
Just a quick update, it turned out to be the drive motor pully, a $15 part... and it was making that same exact noise.

So drive motor pulley causes this same noise? I had the part in this video replaced today by a repair man who's repaired this thing 3x. I thought for sure he'd know but nope. After all his work, still making the same noise 🤷‍♀️
@angiecarlin5091
@angiecarlin5091 2 жыл бұрын
That was what caused my washer to have this noise. It was the drive motor pully, not the transmission pully. It's simply bolted to the bottom of the drive motor. It was quick easy fix. It only took about 10 minutes to replace it and only cost $15 for the part.

Hello friend. I found your video very helpful. I have the same problem but I think it is not the pulley but the gear you lubricate at 5:07. That piece is a whole part or is it just that white part? Do I have to disassemble the whole transmission?

The sound made by the washing machine I use, unlike the one you show in the video, does not follow a pattern but is continuous. It can generate its wash cycle without any problem but when switching to spin it is as if the teeth are not anchoring to each other. Could it be the spring that is worn and does not extend the pulley completely?

Grease the clutch teeth and replace shifter. Also, check to see if there is back and forth play in the transmission shaft. If there js, you have a bad transmission causing your clutch to missalign (rare but can happen). Good luck with the repair.

i’m looking to buy a new washer and dryer. I want to know your opinion on what is a good brand to buy that last a long time I’m not looking for bells and whistles I want something that will wash my clothes and get them clean and do the job.
@DuctTapeMechanic
@DuctTapeMechanic Жыл бұрын
If you are going to buy new I would just buy a whirlpool washer and dryer. The basic ones. You want to make sure the washer has a agitator and the dryer is the one with the lint trap on the top. Also, do not overload the washer otherwise you will strip out the tub in a year and it will shake violently. That's is how I would approach buying a new set. I perfer older used whirlpool/kenmore washers and dryers.

Exact noise my Kenmore 500 was making. I replaced the clutch assemble and actuator, and everything works great except at the last few seconds of the spin cycle it makes the grinding noise again...very frustrating. Any suggestions?
@DuctTapeMechanic
@DuctTapeMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
Take off the clutch and see if there is play (back and forth) in the threaded shaft of the transmission (the part that the pully bolts to). If there is play your transmission is shot. If there is not my only suggestion is to grease the teeth of the clutch and put everything back together.

Hello, thanks for the video. We have a maytag model MVWC 416FW1 Type 58820 series 074931525. When our washer is spinning, it sounds like a jet engine. It is really loud. We hear a little grinding but not what was in your video. Do you think replacing with a new clutch kit will help and solve our problem and the part number you posted for amazon will be compatible with our model? Dp you think it could be the bearings? Our washer looks identical to the one in the video. Thanks!!
@DuctTapeMechanic
@DuctTapeMechanic 11 ай бұрын
If it sounds like a jet, then the bearings in your transmission are bad. This requires the transmission to be replaced. I do have a video on that as well. However, it is a costly repair (around $200 if you do it yourself)

I don't know if you will see this, but I have a question - I have this exact same washing machine and it's making this exact same sound so I plan on attempting the repair you demonstrated here, however there is still some water in the washing machine that I can hear when i move the drum around with my hand. I stopped the spin cycle when I started hearing that noise. Is there another way to drain it or when I tip it over is it going to spill everywhere?
@DuctTapeMechanic
@DuctTapeMechanic Жыл бұрын
I would personally set the washer to drain and spin mode once before doing the repair (I know it will be loud but it sure beats making a watery mess!). That is probably the easiest way. Best of luck with the repair.

@@DuctTapeMechanic awesome, thank you! I wasn't sure if I should let it run with it making that noise, out of fear that running it would damage other parts... but if I just have to endure that horrible noise and it's not breaking anything else, listening to that definitely beats a watery mess!!

Mine makes the same noise in "normal" cycle while shuttering violently. However, if I switch over to the "rinse and spin" cycle it seems to work just fine...even the agitator works quietly.
