In this video you will see everything that you need to know about the Waimea Canyon Lookout in Kauai, Hawaii. Waimea Canyon is one of the most fascinating canyons in the world and is an awesome sight to behold. It is situated in the western part of Kauai, one of the Hawaiian Islands. The Island of Kauai is nicknamed "The Garden Isle" and has a total area of 562.3 miles and is the second oldest of the Hawaiian main islands. The Waimea Canyon is located in the Waimea Canyon State Park and Koke'e State Park. The road to the Waimea Canyon was originally paved in the 1940s. Construction of the lookouts followed and visitation increased dramatically in the 1960's. The Waimea Canyon is a canyon of many colors. In fact, the canyon's name "Waimea" literally translates to "redish water" and is a reference to its most prominent feature, the erosion of the red soil in the canyon.
Formed by a shield volcano over 5 million years ago, the Island of Kauai continues to be sculpted by water, wind, and surf. Waimea Canyon was created by volcanic shifting and water cutting through the many layers of basaltic lava deposited by the volcano. The lava of Hawaii is porous, crumbly, and some of the most intensively weathered in the world. The Waimea Canyon measures over 13 miles in length, about 1.5 miles wide, and up to 2,500 feet in depth. The canyon runs roughly east-west across the island. The horizontal layers and colors seen on the walls of the canyon reflect a series of lava flows that occurred over the past 4-5 million years. The reddish hues show the varying levels of iron oxide and the chemical make-up of the lava. Trees are able to grow along the lower slopes where there is water and soil while the rocky slopes and ridge tops tend to be dry and barren. Some of the vegetation in the Waimea Canyon can be identified by color. The native Koa trees with their silvery, sickle-shaped leaves and Kukui trees with their pale green leaves are the easiest to recognize.
The Waimea Canyon is home to the Waimea River. The most important element that formed the canyon is the Waimea River, which is approximately 12.1 miles long. This river originates in the central point and second-highest point of the Kauai Island, Mount Waialeale. One of the most remarkable facts about this mountain is that its peak is considered to be one of the wettest places on the planet with an average yearly rainfall of approximately 373 inches.
The Waimea Canyon is located in a U.S. State Park and is therefore administrated by the State Parks Division of the Department of Land and Natural Resources. Here is a link to the Waimea Canyon State Park : dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/parks/kau...
Apart from the canyon, there are also numerous adventure hiking trails as well.
