High quality and mass market 1st party games matter more than anything else. It allows the platform holder to be self reliant. If those games are exclusive, it drives people to the platform

Of course Microsoft doesn't think exclusives sell their systems. Their system is an all streaming subscription that will play on anything and they don't care to make hardware. This was their goals since the Xbox One launch and their always online DRM policy backfired before launch. Now that people have opened up to streaming; they ready to ditch selling consoles and games and fufill their plan. Sony has one more gen of selling consoles before they do the same as both Sony and Microsoft ARE NOT game companies. They never were. They are multitech/media companies that wanted to milk the gaming customers while they stayed in the industry. Only Sega, Nintendo and the others, that primarily make games; are actually gaming companies. They are the ones that care about the industry and traditional selling of games (while also trying to make money, but not to the point where they screw themselves over, as gaming is their only main life line; unlike Sony and Microsoft; who have ALOT of other aspects of their businesses to fall back on; if they ever failed at gaming).

Not gonna lie, u do have a point, but exclusives and the preservation of gaming does not matter over the dollar. That fact shouldn't change because u have other assets to fall back on. thats why we are seeing the results Microsoft is facing😂. U would think their narrative would change after being successful with the 360. Thats why Nintendo is winning. I can't say the same thing for Sony. Sony is a little bit more like nintendo. They've come to realize the importance of gaming since the ps1- ps5 era. But if u think Microsoft and Sony see video games otherwise, then i think they shouldn't be in the gaming business. All Sony has is Playstation. Their other divisions aren't doing well. Playstation is what's holding up sony.

What makes exclusives matter for Nintendo is that they actually keep them exclusive. For the last 5 or more years I can always bank on getting most anything released for PS/Xbox on PC like a year or 2 later for a huge discount, so I really have no reason or incentive to want another console, being able to play release date doesn't matter to me at all. Literally the only non-nintento exclusive that I can think of that I can't play on PC that I care about is Bloodbourne.

First party exclusives absolutely are a big factor of system sales. Not the SOLE factor, obviously, it would be hyperbolic to claim any one factor is the be all, end all for any system’s success or failure. You need good exclusives, you need third party support to help bolster the library, you need good marketing, you need a solid hook that makes customers do a “distracted boyfriend” look at your console over the competition. And Wii U had none of that, but Switch did.

Perfectly said. I also think exclusives are important to avoid monopolizing the industry. The more we’ve seen less exclusives being made the more we have seen these large companies consume smaller ones and lay off a bunch of people. However, if there are games they can’t obtain them they have to create their own take on it, to differentiate it we see new takes on the genre. It fosters healthy competition, a world with no exclusives is a world where just one platform would dominate

Nintendo is a toy maker. They will make their own “toys” until no one wants them anymore. So, yeah, it isn’t likely but Switch 2, 3 and 4 would have to be to huge failures for Nintendo to even consider going software only. And even if that was the case, they’re just as likely to swerve and get out of the home console business altogether.

Exclusives sell consoles but companies do not make the bulk of their profits from console sales. A console lives or dies by how many games that company sells. The console is just to get the customer in the door the games are the sell.

These people are confusing "exclusives sell consoles" with "exclusives are the ***only*** thing that sell consoles". Ofc if so many other factors are against a console exclusives can't save it, but exclusives are a big factor in console sales. Heck the Wii U is further proof of that as if it's exclusive library didn't exist it wouldn't have sold anywhere near it did. The PC argument is super weird because yes PC's don't care about exclusives, but that's because you need a PC for basically everything today. The percentage of PC users who use it just for gaming and absolutely nothing else would be astronomicaly small.

I totally agree with this take. What's the point of owning a piece of hardware when it has all the same software as another piece of hardware and zero exclusive offerings? It's curious to see Sony's exclusive titles going the way of the dodo by being ported to PC en masse, like what are even their prospects for the future of their brand this way? A plastic box with slightly different specs than their competition? What's the logic there? I feel like MS and Sony are pushing this silly narrative of "exclusives don't matter anymore" on social media just to make excuse for their own lack of good software lineups on their respective platforms in comparison to Nintendo's stellar first-party IPs.

I think this is an interesting topic. Short answer, Yes! But if Microsoft launched like 20 exclusives of their top series next year, they still might not have the same impact as if Nintendo did. Same with sony. Having exclusives is definitely a key strategy, buut I think you also have to train gamers to want and expect those exclusives. Now with Sony and Microsoft, you can kind of expect their multi-release later, many IP aren't really treated as an IP but more as like an exclusive film for their their theater. (In that it's not all the time, but a lot of their newer and especially smaller new IP don't try too hard to look different from each other stylistically, and often don't try to differ too much by genre either. It kind of feels like if Nintendo just kept making new platform games with new franchises in modern times over using characters like Mario or Kirby.) Honestly, I feel like Sony is making first party titles multiplatform only for the reason of the extra profit to cover ballooning development. However, with Microsoft that is an issue too... but they still dominate the PC gaming space. Not many people are running their games on Linux for example. When PC gamers buy games on PC they are still often technically buying a microsoft console. I think Microsoft is still trying to do what they claimed to do years ago, which is make themselves more of a platform like the app store or google play, and just spread their options out as much as possible by making the quality still feel at least standard. It makes sense as a strategy, but I don't know if one can say it's a "proven strategy" yet like having console exclusives.

Also the Wii U didn't even get a main line NEW Zelda game until the switch came out and that game obviously helped sell the Nintendo Switch. It didn't help sell new WIi U systems due to bad timing.

That's because BOTW came out well after the Wii U had already floundered... Wii U never recovered due to the bad marketing and naming of the console out the gate.. but if BOTW was at launch for Wii U that could of told a different story... but Wii U also didn't get Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, or Metroid to a name a few... the system missed out on so many Nintendo IPs...

Xbox have adopted a short term gain long term loss strategy which PS are also adopting with PC ports. 1st party exclusives are still very important.

What you have to understand is that people have no taste. They don’t understand quality AT ALL. Quality first party titles should sell systems and they have in the past but this newer generation do not understand quality or paying for quality. Everything is free. Everything is instant. It’s a huge problem. Even people I know that call themselves “hardcore gamers” have never played a top notch Zelda. Never played amazing games like ICO or Shadow of the Colossus. They ignore Mario. They have NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED PLAYING A METROID GAME. Much less have they played Metroid Prime. It’s hilarious. People are so stupid and you are basically talking to people with a brain and common sense which are few and far between.
