And holy cow other farmers have 1000 sheep!
@gregedmand9939Ай бұрын
The ideal birth rate for a ewe is one or two lambs. That's why they have only 2 teats. Breeders trying to maximize numbers have created strains that are prone to putting out multiples. Having triplets or more can work as long as the shepherd is willing to pay the price in feeding the extra lambs and nursing them. Unfortunately the ewes also pay a price in more frequent metabolic illnesses and shortened production life. There's extra work there too. As Sandi said, the only way to reduce her flock birthrate is by genetic selection. Until that can be arranged, this is just the way things are. The average ewe can rarely raise more than twins without assistance. As even triplets grow in size to demand more milk, the lambs fight and bully. They also fight over teat access biting and damaging udders in the process. Bottle feeding or milk machines are a must. Sandi has a working system with minimal average loses... With a LOT of work!
@birgittakarlsson3679Ай бұрын
She admits to her ewes being very prolific and are trying to lessen the amount of lambs per ewe but that is a slow process. She is doing a great job as it is, but it is a lot of extra work with so many bottlebabies.

Good morning, I’m a retired Lactation consultant. Thought I’d pass along a trick we use for babies who refuse to suck. Place the nipple towards the roof of the mouth, it’s important to be gentle and only advance the nipple about half in the mouth. You can gently move the nipple back and forth. This typically causes the normal response to suck the nipple back into the mouth. Always be gentle forcing the nipple can cause a negative reaction. Hopefully this may help . It’s worth a try.. Merry Christmas!!
@Marilou-g5tАй бұрын
A lady who very successfully got calves to suckle would "gently tickle" or rub the muzzle/nose. Perhaps helpful for lambs or kids for shepherds and goatherds...
@aftersexhighfivesАй бұрын
I think for sheep it's just slightly different because sometimes they don't know they've been born and that's why they don't suckle and that's why you do the Madigan hug on them(which is a relatively new technique) so that they realize they've been born and begin to suckle. I don't think cows or human babies are ever confused about whether or not they've been born and obviously it's not conscious confusion it's something internal in their systems. But I think sheep are just slightly different because so many of them are born at one time or can be born at one time. So the squeeze coming out of mom isn't enough to trigger the I've been born response in the lamb.
@maryr2411Ай бұрын

This is too funny - I have recently discovered the easiest way to give my puppy a pill is to wrap it in a little peanut butter, sour cream or cream cheese and stick it to the roof of her mouth ! Haven’t had her spit out a pill since I started doing it this way - Maybe using the roof of the mouth is a trick that works for all mammals 🤷♀️

Never fun to find 2, or more, mismatched feet or a head before 2 attached feet, or a tail coming first. Always amazing to see the delivery of the newborns. It is the part of farm life that is the ABSOLUTE BEST when no challenges and most trying when troubles arrise. I have assisted with the delivery of hundreds of calves in nearly 50 years and thousands of pigs in my last 6 weeks of working at a farrowing barn where we had over 200 sows farrow each week. And 7 pups were neat to assist. Pigs and pups can be easily born backwards. Cattle is trickier backwards.

The calf was a shistasomareflexus. Not sure i spelled that right... about 15 or 20 years ago... Our vets at the clinic had only read about this, til they did the c-section on this cow to remove her calf.

@alicecain4851 i trained my Spanish-speaking coworkers at the dairy, untill the herd dispersed completely in April of 2023. I miss the birthings the most. Hopefully, my young ram will sire some lambs out of my 2 ewes, which are about a year old now. I have seen some of the lip curl behavior, but no action seen. Hoping no births til green grass and warm weather. At the dairy, I got to do aseptic milk samples, strike them on bi or tri-plates, incubate, and read the bacterial growths to determine best antibiotic therapies for any mastitis cases. I went to Quality Milk Lab in upstate NY with 2 of our vet clinic docs and a vet tech to learn reading the growth on the plates. What a challenging few days! My cousin's midwife tested her mastitis back in the 90's. Most docs just write a script.

The lambs are mostly lying in the 'stable,' the mamas eat from the manger. So, imagine Mary, with whatever women Joseph could find, grabbing fresh straw to labor on, holding her hand, guiding her through contractions, and bringing forth a baby. Wiping him off, wrapping him up, figuring out nursing, and finally laying him in the feed bunk so they could catch a rest.

I believe every shepherd struggles to achieve exactly weaning 2 lambs per ewe - considering there will be ewes that miss, ewes that scan multiples but have only 1 alive, ewes with stillborns, babies that come out fine with no help but mom rejects them, babies that find a way to die before weaning, and everything else! Your flock is special because you raise 3 crops of lambs per year, unlike all those shepherds in the UK who only can lamb once a year because that’s what their conditions permit. It’s also special because you have found an incredibly successful addition with the wool from your flock actually becoming a valuable asset! As best I have seen, the trait for lambing out of season is always paired with the tendency towards more than twins. Merry Christmas to all the Brock’s, humans, dogs, and sheep too! 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄❤️🐑❤️🐑❤️🐑

I love that last little Tunis baby boy with the white face. I think my favorite , though, is Cocoa, the little black lambiekin. I hope she stays as sweet and tame as she grows up. I still think one of these times a little black lambie should be named Inkie.

Oh Sandi I have watched you for a long time not quite from the beginning but not far off and I simply love your channel. Remember you are great at what you do for your flock, I don’t mind what content you put out, it’s lovely to see you all working as a family, but I really enjoy seeing the joy in your face when those “special” lambs are born, and coco is a great name for your new adorable lamb. Don’t ever doubt yourself you are amazing

Merry Christmas Sandi and Mark! Thanks for including us along your daily journeys as farmers, and giving us insights into all that farming entails. May your next year be smooth sailing in both lambing and in the grain farming. Blessings

Merry Christmas Brocks! Thanks for this. I feel like my Christmas 🎄 is complete now that the lambies are all out in the world. That last scene with the 3 babies all snuggling down on one another and mama was so precious

No such thing as too many LAMBS‼️ The more lambs, the better the Lamb-Nadoes😂. Ya know, I'm always polite on your page but today I'll make an exception to say anyone who wrote that much less thought that, I'm glad they are gone🤷♀️ We all know you strive for 2.0 lambs/🐑. Happy Holidays to All & be careful out there (Sandi, feel free to send Tx all your ❄️😉) ✌️🐑🐑🎄🎁🇨🇱🇺🇸🐾
