Waiwhetu Maori and Wellington City scrapping over a waka

Waka - Pay up or give it up. That's the message the Wellington City is delivering to Waiwhetu Maori over the waka scrap. Ownership, partnership and just how the waka will be used in the future could be decided in the High Court in Wellington.

I negotiated the final payment of $150,000 to the Council on behalf of the Runanga with Garry Poole and Sir Ngatata. It was paid and Sir Hector carved the new Waka for council. Waiwhetu master carver and iwi devoted additional hours of work to its completion and repairs when damaged in Council storage and the original logs were donated by kahui manga iwi. Darcy Nicholas
