Open the film back with shutter open on B at f2.8 and put the old screen across the film plain (ground glass facing towards lens) and check with a magnifier that the point of focus matches what the new screen in the viewfinder gives.

Nice, I'll do that! Great tip!

Never had a Rollei but it's quick to put in screens in my Mamiya C330fs. I like the split image as it guarantees focus-no guessing. One way to check focus if to tape a piece of hair across film plane and with back open shine light through back onto wall. Focus hair onto wall and see where the focus screen is at as far as focus.

My old Rolleiflex 2.8 came with the old screen, but it's pretty good. I also have a R. Automat with a new screen which is even brighter though. Maybe I got lucky with my purchases.

It made a night and day difference to my 2.8E. It means that I also take it out more. 😊

I had a few 2.8 models and they were heavy. My favorite Rolleiflex "daily driver" I take around is a 3.5T and I love it. Just got a nice prism finder for it, too, and a replacement bright screen.

Excellent episode. I have a 2.8a that I have enjoyed shooting. Exclusively outside on sunny days so the screen brightness is not as much an issue. However, it is a bit dim and I have considered getting a bright screen. Your review is generally positive overall with the shim subject certainly a caveat. I think I will see what my options are and take a deeper dive.

I just found an old Rolleiflex 2.8c from my dad. And yes you are totally right the screen is pretty dark. I thought it was something like fungus or mold or anything else. Still need to get some cleaning for sure it has a lot of dust but I don’t know where I can send it to be fixed and maintenance .

You should be able to take the top off--four screws--and clean it yourself. You can order a replacement bright screen. There's a guy in Longmont CO, Dave Feely at Key Camera, who is a Rolleiflex-trained repairman.

I have a Rolleiflex 3.5 E. I bought a new screen for it but I'm afraid to try putting it in. The screws on the finder are tight and I'm afraid I'll strip them if I try to hard. So I've got a nice new screen siting in a box of other stuff. Maybe some day soon I'll try it. Any thoughts about loosening the screws?

First I would try a drop of Ronsonol Lighter Fluid. It eats away gumminess and evaporates. Really a microdrop applied with a small screwdriver. If not that, then a tiny drop of WD40. And use a good-quality precision jewelers screwdriver. Or take it to a local jeweler and ask them to start them.
