Come along on this flight to Love Field (KDAL) in Dallas, Texas in the Bonanza. On a beautiful cloudless and calm winter day, I take off from Muskogee, Oklahoma (KMKO). The flight is routine until seconds before touchdown the left wing drops unexpectedly: wake turbulence.
Filed route: KMKO - FINGR - KDAL (187 nautical miles)
Flown route: KMKO - FINGR.HIBIL3 - KDAL (HIBIL3 is an arrival procedure into KDAL)
Cruise altitude: 8,000 requested, but 6,000 was the highest I was cleared to

Couple of things - I'm not a pilot but great video! I would never think about that air wake at touch down with no one in front of you - excellent control - And yes that girl was talking so fast I don't see how you can stay on top of it all.

Yup. "HiBil", as in Hillbilly. LOL Nice as usual Martin. It's a pleasure to watch you fly. You're absolutely right about the Flight is not over until you lock the door & walkaway from the plane. (Just to paraphrase. : ) Sorry about Sun 'n Fun Martin. I thought they were going to stay on, then just postpone, and was hoping they would stay committed. Hopefully EAA will go on as planned.

Great video. The video from the front facing camera is clear and sharp. Nice. Someone should tell that female traffic controller that she is largely unintelligible, at least to me. It's amazing the you could understand her.

I made a mistske tsking off too quick in my PA-18 after a touch and go of a C-130 . A coast Guard C-130 was practicing TO/Landings, and while I was climbing at 250 ft off the ground the cub rolled 90 degrees to my left- about as quick as an eye blinking. I was lucky that it abruptly stopped and I used rudder and aileron to roll back level. I was dead meat if I had gone upside down since I'm not aerobaticaly trained. My intention has been to get "upset" training after that experience.

It can be quite violent, and what I experienced fortunately was a very mild case of it. As for upset recovery, that is definitely a great thing to train for. I took a weekend class at CP Aviation last summer with Mark King. They are in Santa Paula, CA, and I got a lot out of it. Best regards, Martin

Thanks for sharing Martin. Always enjoy flying along with you. In all my years of flying I have been given the caution wake turbulence warning many times but never actually experienced any effects from it. I like your comment to stay vigilant all the way until you are safely on the ground. That is valuable advice.

Thanks for the feedback, Preston. I am based at a Class Charlie airport and have flown to many larger ones, so landing behind a jet is nothing unusual for me. What I SHOULD have done here is pay better attention to the wind, which came from 290 - giving that famous "light, quartering tailwind" for runway 13L - the textbook scenario for wake turbulence on landing. Thanks, Ron. It was really an automatic response; you can see from the angle from behind that I'm starting to correct while my eyes are still looking at the landing gear indication down low. Probably not the best place for those lights! Best, Martn

It really differs from airport to airport, George. Some fly the SIDs and STARs, for others it seems merely a backup plan for lost comms. Best, Martin

Thank you. I really enjoy the upgrades I made to the avionics stack - the Avidyne IFDs, but also the Lynx transponder and the PS Engineering audio panel. And of course the JPI EDM930 engine monitor, which is fantastic. I feel like I have the best of everything - on the RIGHT side of the panel. (The left side will get an update at some point, I'm sure...) Best regards, Martin

Busy flight! It's good to be reminded to fly the aircraft until she's parked. The mesa top airports I fly out of have their own way of reminding me, I like this way better. This was a very well produced video btw

Great catch there at landing Martin. The DFW area is unbelievably busy. Those Regional Approach controllers can fast talk with the best of them but they are also some of the friendliest in the business, it's a Texas thing. I'd of stopped on the taxiway also cause it sure didn't look like that corporate jet had gotten the word to hold short for you yet. Looks like a nice FBO but 5.80 a gallon is still steep but compared to the 7.80 here in Memphis I guess thats a steal.

Hey Mike, I hope you and your FedEx colleagues are weathering the corona storm alright! Always good to hear from you! I've only been to Texas a few times in my life, but every visit has been a very pleasant one. I'd love to get to know the state better. As for the business jet, yes, I was initially not quite sure who was going to go first, but the Tower controller was very clear, so I jumped ahead. Figured the jet was on Ground, that's why I did not hear any instructions to them. Best regards, Martin

Awesome FBO! We got that goody bag ourselves - my kids loved their pens!! Almost as much as the ice cream! Departing 31R was notam closed was fun taxi to 31L by the big guys. Cheers 🥂

It was interesting to note that the wake turbulence encounter happened just as you looked over to the right to check something on the panel.

Yes, indeed, and I thought about whether that was the true reason for rolling to the left, or maybe just a plain simple wind gust. But in the end, I get back to wake turbulence. You are correctly observing that my head is moving to the right, to check the landing gear, just as the airplane rolls to the left. If you look closely, there is no aileron movement which explains this roll. Nor were there any wind gusts, or any strong wind for that matter. What there WAS was a light, slightly quartering tailing (from 290 for runway 13L) - textbook conditions for having a wake somewhat stationary over the runway. I cannot say with absolute certainty that that is what it was, but it is the most plausible explanation in my mind. Best regards, Martin

I remember me and my instructor waiting behind a heavier twin prop to line up and just feeling our little DV20 get some beating of it. In the meantime 2 aircraft on final and landed almost simultaneously. It was a remarkable flight lesson day and I even got it on tape. We took some extra time before taking off. I don´t think I could handle wake turbulence like this if I would be on my own. This was great to watch and to learn from!

@@dutchygirl I actually landed at Teuge once in a Cessna 152 during my PPL training. I grew up in Germany, very close to the Dutch border - EDLF was my home base for more than 10 years.

Excellent video, Martin. Quick ForeFlight tip (realizing you're a recent convert)... 8:03, click the FBO button upper bar to display the location of all FBOs (including in this case Business Jet Center) on the Airport Diagram.

You also had a slight tailwind component, which can sometimes push the vortices farther down the runway than you might otherwise expect to encounter them.

Biz Jet is the FBO I stop at too. KDAL is my alternate for KADS if the weather is low because it's 200 ft lower. Btw, she's the fast controller in Dallas.

Martin, great video as always. As wake turbulence encounters go, thankfully this one didn’t seem too bad, at least from the video perspective, but I’m sure it felt a lot worse from your seat! Question, how do you get your ForeFlight audio into your video recordings? Is it a separate audio track from the intercom audio?

Yes, the camera cannot convey what I felt at the time when the airplane suddenly rolled to the left. You can see in the video how I immediately move the aileron, even before I look outside (I was checking the landing gear indicator at that moment). It was manageable, but certainly got my full attention. Best, Martin

Hi Eduardo, thank you for noticing. I made two changes for the front camera recently: upgraded from a Hero5 to a Hero8, and I no longer use the ND filter (prop filter). The Hero8 makes the propeller look better (still not perfect, of course) without an ND filter, and overall the image is much sharper as a result. Big improvement. Best regards, Martin

Great flight Martin...I liked the way you set up your flight plan as well as the Arrival & Approach. Being an owner myself, I enjoy you showing your experience with the Avidyne. I have a question on the Avidyne you might be able to answer. On the MAP page with the Datablock tab showing only, is their another way to display Datablocks, (maybe knob push/twist), in the MAP page without touching the screen to display?

Thank you, Jim. There are no concrete upgrade plans for an EFIS at this time - not because I don't want one, but because the piggy bank is empty from the engine I ordered from Continental. Upgrading to an IO550; they are saying 'May', but who knows in these difficult times when things will really happen. One day I'll get an EFIS and GPSS, but until then I'll enjoy flying with my six pack. Best, Martin

Hello! My favorite model years for A36 are 1979-83. In 1978 (that's what I have), Beech switched from 14V to 28V for the electrical system. In 1979 they extended the baggage compartment. Then in 1984, they made significant changes by adding a true dual yoke (no more option to have the throw-over yoke, which I like a lot) and brought in the bigger engine (IO-550). 1979-1983 have great useful load. - Martin

It was a beautiful flying day indeed, Kenny! The reason for stopping at Love was, as you guessed, just to land at another Class Bravo airport. On my bucket list is to fly to all of the Class Bravos in the lower 48. I'm about one third done! :-) Best regards, Martin

Hi Bill, I think I was only listening to one of them (Approach first, then Tower) at a time. Can you point me at a time stamp that makes you think otherwise, so I understand your question better? @@martinpauly it was at 17:45. Upon viewing it again, I see that you were tuning those frequencies into the lowere radio (COM 2?). You were still talking to approach on COM 1. The next generation of these boxes will likely queue up all frequencies in the order expected based on the approach, although some suppliers probably already offer that.

Martin, Thanks for the video. I'm curious, do know how much time elapsed between when you were cleared to land with traffic on short final and when you crossed the threshold? I tried to time it in the video, but it appears there may have been a film edit.

It was between two and three minutes. I would say the problem was not the time, but the fact that DAL was landing with a tailwind. Had this been into a headwind, there would have been no chance of any wake remaining over the touchdown zone. - Martin

You know, I was just thinking that the 6 1/2+ kt. tailwind you had during landing, is what pushed the Vortices forward down the runway. That's why you encountered them where you usually wouldn't have. So if you're landing with a decent tailwind, especially behind a large aircraft, keep a heads up that landing just past where he touched down might not do it.

Right - it's the textbook FAA question, also covered in the knowledge test: a light quartering tail makes wake turbulence especially likely over the runway. Best, Martin

Thank you, Al. I record the iPad screen and audio through HDMI, into a solid state video recorder. Funny thing is, I don't actually hear the ForeFlight audio in flight; instead I hear the Avidyne IFD audio which is harder to capture for the videos. Best regards, Martin

Have you had a look at the water surface in front of the airfield, to see if the camera picked up the wake turbulences? :) Really interesting video, but this approach looked pretty low to me in the first place. Or is just the camera perspective different this time?

Is it possible that you experienced a wind gust, rather than wake? The wind was from 290, so wake vortices would have been blown off to your left. Something lifted up your right wing and with the wind from the right, I would suspect that. I guess I'd want to look at the weight of the previous jet and the exact time interval. A well-done video in either case and you're right, HIBIL should be pronounced as you did, under normal rules of English.

Hi John. I cannot say with certainty that it wasn't a wind gust, but I don't believe so. This was not a windy day at all, let alone a gusty day - it was fairly calm all the way in. There was a light, slightly quartering tailing (from 290 for runway 13L) - textbook conditions for having a wake somewhat stationary over the runway. Thanks for your feedback, and the exact pronunciation of all the STARs and SIDs and intersections will forever be a mystery to me. :-) Best regards, Martin

Fly it all the way to the ramp!. I am still getting to know my 78 A36.....100 hr engine SMOH, Gamis....but it seems to take me 2 rotations too many to start. I notice yours leaps into life. I do fuel pump to peak, it wiggles for a brief second, then a second then off... back and 3 half turns per the POH......what is your normal start recipe?

Try a little less fuel - turn off the fuel pump the moment the fuel flow/pressure gauge peaks. Most people seem to use more fuel than needed for priming. - Martin

Noticed at 25:10 that Foreflight shows GPS altitude of 399' while the field diagram shows 487' with FF accuracy of 4 metres. What gives?

Good question - I can't say for sure why there is such a difference. Love Field is very flat, so there are no big differences in elevation from one survey spot to another - maybe just a few feet. A little bit of delta might come from the difference between the WGS84 model used by GPS and the real shape of the earth. But neither of these explain an 80 foot difference. Anybody here have a good explanation? - Martin

@@donjohnston3776 Don, to my knowledge, Garmin's "Safe Return" emergency landing system uses a radio altimeter to determine height above ground for the flare and touchdown - as do large transport-category airplanes with full CAT III auto land systems. - Martin

Right up front I want to state that this comment is based on hindsight and is intended only to provoke intelligent discussion! Conventional wisdom is to stay above the glide path when following a heavy airplane and to land long. On reflection, this sound advice is based on the notion that we typically land into a headwind. Your landing was on 13L with the last reported wind 300/7. That is almost a direct tailwind. The wake turbulence comes from the wing tips while generating lift, so clearly touching down beyond the prior plane's touchdown point makes sense. But with a tailwind the vortexes will be blown further down the runway which is what happened to you. I wonder if we need to rethink conventional wisdom in the case of a tailwind!

Hi Martin, Yes, you understand it correctly. Landing into a headwind, as we normally do, just fly above the glide path of the jet and touch down after its touchdown point - and things will be good. With a tailwind, it's not so easy, for the reasons you mentioned. Best regards, Martin

Hi Ethan, the headset I use is called "Halo", made by "QuietTechnologies". It's very light weight and works without any pressure on the ears. Not everyone likes the foam plugs, but they've been working great for me. Best, Martin

There WAS a landing fee; however, it doesn't get collected by the FBO. Instead, a few weeks later you get a letter in the mail with an invoice. $22 or so in my case, and I got the letter the day after I posted the video. - Martin

The Correct action when there MAY BE wake turbulence is to LAND LONG therefore negating the wake turbulence.

23:10 for Wake Turbulence. I ran into this last week while flying a Mooney getting my complex. We were midair maybe 4 miles from the airport and we crossed behind a smaller jet that was landing in front of us. I controlled it but the instructor was a bit worried at first and I laughed once we figured out it was all good. I said well I had to make sure to give you a bit of a scare to wake you up this morning:)

Hi Rodger, I thought about that, as well as a plain simple wind gust. But in the end, I get back to wake turbulence. You are correctly observing that my head is moving to the right, to check the landing gear, just as the airplane rolls to the left. If you look closely, there is no aileron movement which explains this roll. Nor were there any wind gusts, or any strong wind for that matter. What there WAS was a light, slightly quartering tailing (from 290 for runway 13L) - textbook conditions for having a wake somewhat stationary over the runway. I cannot say with absolute certainty that that is what it was, but it is the most plausible explanation in my mind. Best regards, Martin
