I recommend reading Fr. Garrigou Lagrange's book on Predestination for a Thomistic understanding of the subject

John Calvin didn’t believe in double predestination scholastic answer a catholic KZbinr and redeem zoomer notes this Thomas and Calvin agree on that point it’s just Calvin comes from a perspective of divine sovereignty and Thomas from divine providence I love both Calvin and Thomas I’m a Calvinist Protestant but I love and appreciate st Thomas

@@DekemaStokes Thank you for the comment and info. Did Calvin believe in free will?

@@thethomist great question sir I Honestly don’t think he did I think he believed in the will but it’s deprived of freedom of choice something of a enslavement but I’m not 100% sure I do have to do more research on his perspective of it tho I like St Thomas take on free will regardless of what I heard so far from Calvin I think St Thomas got it right and his interpretation of Augustine

@@DekemaStokes Thank you. That is my understanding as well but I've always thought of Calvin as a Double Predestination believer. if there is a heaven and hell and some go to both places and there is no free will it seems to set up a scenario for Double, wouldn't you think? Thanks for the conversation. Very interesting.

As a Calvinist, I can definitely say that Calvin did believe in free will, and that it is not comprised by predestination. In fact our early reformers like Peter Martyr Vermigli basically took like 90% of their doctrine of predestination from Thomas Aquinas. I am reading through the ST now and I'm surprised how much I can agree with it, even Thomas's treatment on Pt 1 Q23 Art 3 on "Whether God reprobates any man?" Overall the ST has been very edifying even for me as a Reformed Christian. Glad I got it!

Yes, I remember being very surprised when I first read that STA said that God both predestines man and reprobates men. Shocked me to read. But then he fully defends man's free will too. I've not studied Calvinism to know enough about how similar and different they are but interesting to read your comments as a Calvinist yourself. Thanks for the feedback.
