My maternal great great grandparents went from ireland to new york and my grandfather and his wife settled in wilmington nc before having their 4 children, including my mom. My paternal great great great grandparents came from england and eventually made their way to texas and my great great grandpa was at the alamo before buying up alot of land in easterly texas which is sustaining my family to this day via oil ... My paternal grandmother also has a rich legacy in texas and through her, we became part of the daughters of the republic of texas. I love that my family kept track on s0 many sides of our heritage and that we still have the land that some of them walked on and were buried. ❤

I agree with you. People should not be taking artefacts from it or going down to see it. It is a gravesite for 1,500 who never got a proper burial, in fact a gravesite now for 1505 after that submersible sinking. May they all Rest in Peace.

And people don't visit gravesites on land??? This is a foolish notion. I'm onboard with saying that it shouldn't be made into tourist attraction or that you shouldn't be respectful, but there are a lot of answers to be found and mysteries surrounding Titanic. To make money out of it seems wrong, but what about other wrecks. Nobody cares about the sacrilige taking place there. If you have any decorum i don't see why visiting the Titanic would be morally wrong. Just show respect. That's all. Don't make light of it and yes, perhaps leaving artifacts down there is for the better. Enough is retrieved as it is now, so..... It's only good for us to see the real human tragedy and make us realise how we need to stop complaining about our First world problems, just like some First Class passengers did, sadly.

The 1997 film makes it look like the majority of steerage passengers were Irish but this wasn't the case. There were 120 Irish in total on the Titanic. There were 165 Lebanese on board, of whom 123 died. Also there were almost as many Swedes, and half as many Finns, as Irish on board.

There were only 86 Lebanese onboard, but what's interesting about them was they had the highest percentage of women and children saved. There was a total of 32 Lebanese survivors, including 15 out of 24 women and 11 out of 13 children

there were many reason why this happened; first and second class were closer to the deck; steward/stewardess had to wake up and pass along the message to each passenger, the upper crew had the information first; the corridors had many locked gates to keep steerage passengers from going to the first class, due to contamination reasons ( 3rd class was considered less hygenic), the ones that did find their way up to the deck were led by crew members with luck.

As a young boy I slept under a picture of Titanic sinking and bodies floating, my Grandmother told me about her sister Annie McGowan being on it and surviving, I walked with Annie to the church for her sisters funeral, I still have that picture in my home though the years have taken a toll on it!

Being Irish American I was intrigued by this story. My great grandfather and his younger sister came in the 1890's as "unaccompanied minors" , having been recently orphaned.

When I get to Belfast, I shall remember the town and 14. I won't be able to recall all the names. But The LORD will know what's in my heart as He does whi.e I'm typing this. 3 of the 4 of my Grandparents are of Irish descendents. I finally visited last year, 2022. I'm going back to see the northern part of your country. Back in 1995, I visited Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia and saw the v tributes there. I also visited Halifax and was lead to the graveyard for the victims of Titanic. I've love history and have always been fascinated about the story, event that changed Naval history. Of that I'm glad since I served in the US Navy upon a Navy ship. We had enough lifeboats. ❤❤ GOD BLESS 🙏❤🇺🇸

They all lived long, productive lives, with one of my Aunt's working for AT& T, where she was a telephone operator. ☎️ I loved hearing about her life & the lives of all my relatives. What I find so appealing about the surviving ladies is their modesty and quiet, unassuming dignity, especially compared to what we might see in the general population today. They suffered a catastrophe so profound as to be incomparable to any I can think of today except maybe 9/11. Just to have lost so many family members, but in such a violent and unexpected way would be traumatic beyond measure. That they suffered the equivalent of what is today called PTSD for years is undoubtable. And yet they didn't bare their souls and anguish in public as we're accustomed to seeing today, but quietly got on with their lives in the best way they could. And they really were successful as well. I have the feeling that the fact they got to experience as young adults what we call the Roaring 20's, with all its exuberance and vitality accompanied by bright, cheerful music I think may have been very therapeutic to them. These were their child-bearing years and all seem to have raised wonderful children who remembered being loved in return. I can also understand their reluctance to talk about the experience as well--as mentioned it caused them tremendous water associated phobias that last the rest of their lives.

As an Irish American I absolutely fell in love with this documentary, I've always found reenactments like this to be a very powerful tool for teaching and storytelling. However there were some mistakes that as a historian on the White Star Line i really cringed at. Many documentaries exaggerated Titanic's place in history for dramatic and romantic effect. Titanic wasn't built for speed. White Star gave up on the Blue Riband after Teutonic and Majestic both won it 20 years earlier. White Star's improvements for Third Class spaces started WAY before Titanic. Here's the timeline: In the late 1870s, aboard the Oceanic class liners, as well as Britannic and Germanic, they started enclosing open berths into 20 berth dormitories. When Teutonic entered service in 1889, both she and Majestic introduced two berth and four berth cabins for married couples and families with children. In 1898 and 1899, Cymric and Oceanic featured smoke rooms, general rooms and updated dining areas with fitted tables and swivel chairs. In 1901, Celtic featured multiple large scale dining rooms in Third Class spaces as well as over 400 two-, four- and six-berth cabins available for both single men and women. Dormitory style cabins containing about 600 beths were located forward for single men but were only used when they were fully booked. Adriatic was the last to feature dormitory cabins. In 1909, Laurentic and Megantic were the first two offer all Third Class passengers cabin berths

This was a really interesting story that connects you to the people we seldom hear about as individuals people with names instead of just the “Irish immigrants in steerage”. What I didn’t like was the cut scenes with guys being interviewed and giving inaccurate information that is tailored to suit a narrative rather than the truth. It starts right around 28:00 if you want to see what I’m talking about. Those two guys, I presume “historians”, start right in on there being locked doors, chained and locked gates, blocked stairways and stewards waiting at every route of escape to keep 3rd class from getting up to the boat deck. The problem was just how complex the ship was to navigate and the fact 3rd class was the furthest away from the boat deck and when they were designing the ship they they didn’t really make it a priority to make access from 3rd class and crew / machinery spaces deep in the ship and the boat deck promenade a super fast, efficient route. They designed the stairways, corridors, ladders, etc around ventilating trunks, steam and water plumbing and other machinery and engineering spaces while also maximizing space for passengers and cargo in any way they could. Truthfully there were stewards helping lead third class passengers from the 3rd class lounge areas within the stern up and forward to the boat deck and getting them in line to get on an open seat in a boat. While first (and to a lesser extent second) class were surely given some advantages through the night, both intentional and not, there is no evidence that Titanic’s crew did anything to keep 3rd class passengers from getting up to or into the boats once they made it to them.

I am planning to write my own Titanic Story about these two ten year old cousins who sailed on the Titanic and Survived the nightmare of the shipwreck with their own courage and witts and their broken friendship but with great cost obviously meaning their families from their parents and older siblings did not survive and the sinking of the Titanic brings the two cousins relationship more closer and helps them reconcile and everyone who had actually sailed on The Titanic plays a part in the cousins story from Captain Smith Bruce Ismay Thomas Andrews Benjamin Gutinhiem and his Italian butler and his mistress and John Jacob Aster and Maddlin Aster and Molly Brown and Mr and Miss Strous and Wallace Hartley and the rest of the band even the Officers from William Murdoch James Moody and Henry Wild and even Charles Lightoller.

White Star Line never had any christening ceremony for their liners. It was a custom they have been following for years. It was not a show of arrogance. Not only Titanic, none of their steamers had a christening ceremony for their launch. The official names of the steamers were already displayed on a large board in front of the liners during their construction.

Some details are misleading.. Titanic was not the first ship to be thought unsinkable. Olympic and Titanic together were considered "practically unsinkable" due to their new water tight door design. Though White Star never really declared their steamers unsinkable it was the journal Shipbuilder which first wrote about the safety features of the new mammoth liners. When the Olympic survived the collision with HMS Hawke it became a reality in the public minds that these liners would never sink.

Okay... I don’t know why people keep saying Titanic was “unsinkable” nobody, absolutely nobody from White Star Line advertised it as “unsinkable” During the sea trials Captain Smith said “she’s practically unsinkable.” But nowhere in print did White Star Line say “unsinkable.”

Actually it was advertised by the White Star Line as unsinkable, something they denied later in court, along with how the ship couldn't possibly have broken in half and every survivor was lying. BUT thousands of Flyers posted all around London and even distributed with certain newspapers promised the Titanic to be "a one-of-a-kind Ship of Dreams; The largest, most luxurious ship in the world, and the safest; guaranteed unsinkable." Then after it sank right away, The White Star line lead a huge smear campaign against printing presses for 'taking liberties', as if they hadn't ordered those flyers themselves. In truth, being massive and unsinkable were literally the selling points the Titanic was famous for before the ship was even completed. James Cameron actually owns some of those original flyers, and If you watch the making of Titanic the movie, they'll show you that these flyers were scattered all over the ground and pavement where passengers were boarding. It was a slogan repeated in the ship yards where the shipwrights would journal that they were building "a masterpiece that would sail forever", and there are many hand written letters to America from people who perished that have been donated to the museums saying things like they 'would soon be onboard the grandest ship in the world. It can't sink, so don't worry about me.' Local gossip over tea time called the ship 'unsinkable', so much so that the public convinced itself of this new reality the same way that the public does today with things that gain global anticipation and excitement, only to end up being a huge disappointment, like the 'most spectacular final season' of Game of Thrones. Noah Brandt worked on the Southampton docks and wrote to his sister that "Everyone says it can't be sunk. I'm eager to be joining her crew in just a few voyages." Then, after it did sink, the New York post and London papers printed that "the unsinkable has sank". So Idk how you got the impression that no one called the ship unsinkable, but many ships sank back then killing hundreds of people, but only the Titanic gained so much fame, because it was viewed as a reminder from God to stay humble and never think ourselves infallible.

The sad part is , even if there were enough lifeboats , many still would have died .The reason is , that The Titanic sank too fast to load over a thousand people , into the lifeboats .

Pay attention!...It was also shown in another documentary/interpreted movie...Cpt Smith opted his priorities to attend 11am Catholic Mass than to conduct the "fire drill/abort ship" drill to the passengers n crew! He'd known then, "something wrong" bout to occur.

Olympic construction started in December 1908 Titanic construction started in early 1909 and it was not the fastest ship and was launched in 1910 not 1911.....too many mistakes here

My family is from the South..Cork mostly. One side is from the North. Derry but also going way back grandfathers side was on the NW coast. You know I began reading and researching, just digging and searching finding out things that was so painful, things I felt I wish I hadn’t have learned. Not sure what to do with the anger or pain often, now I do ask for the truth is all. Don’t we all deserve the truth, teaching kids history that is made up stories is not ok. Anywho with all the research and talking with family about our family..old stories and all…I realized that our families went through so much they didn’t talk about it much or at all, afraid to talk, there’s generational trauma, there’s staying quiet bc God forbid one poked the bear ya know what that means. Still to this day there’s issues with this because well a certain country has claim to land, it’s bordered off but in Ireland, there Is discrimination still it’s just sad really. The last part of our country that is colonized still..it’s been oh like 900 plus years of that. Staying silent was Survival and then the generations to follow just didn’t know what was never spoken. I am proud to speak of the truth of our people and land, it’s quite healing, we talk openly of slavery, the killing and starvation that was and is genocide, those who fled and so on, it’s freeing to my soul and to family legacy, Irish legacy to be a voice for what’s true and righteous, the pain is there but what’s bigger is the love and gratitude we have, we come from immense strength, we are strong people..we are connected to our kin to the land to the ways..To think I’m alive because of who survived and kept going, no matter what. I am so grateful. ✨

An immigrant is a person who comes to a foreign land (foreign to the immigrant), an emigrant is a person who leaves a place where he/she used to live. Now, considering that the documentary deals with Irish people leaving Ireland to emigrate to the United States (but most of them sadly don't make it) they are emigrants.
