Hi! Please subscribe if you already haven't - It would really help me a lot.
I made this bokken wakizashi (a short japanese wooden sword for training purpose).
This wakizashi is made to a friend of mine. I used a pre-made wakizashi as a template for the right size and shape.
The wakizashi bokken is made from pallet wood. Some kind of oak. I had to do a lot of work to fix all the holes from the nails from when it was a pallet. I'm sure there are better/faster ways to make bokkens. This is how I make them. I like to cut them a bit oversized on the band saw and then handplane them to the final size. Then I can feel the size and weight continuously when I work.
There is a lot of time put into this. Its many hours of work for this one sword alone. Not counting all the time for the glue to dry. I made small plugs that was used to fill the old nail holes. You can see them in the last pictures.
I'ts much smarter to use a clean piece of wood. But the reward for me is higher when I get to use reclaimed wood and get a nice result.
A wakizashi is a much shorter sword than the katana. A bokken is used for training in many martial arts ie. aikido, karate and iaido. I use them sometimes in jiujitsu. I think the wakizashi bokken is a great weapon and reassemble a very long knife or dagger. There is not many (good) wakizashi katas that I found on the Internet, so if you find any, please post in the comments.
I really hope this wakizashi will be used plenty in the dojo.
