The impressive part was that it was only rated at 35 watts. Now days that would be rated at 600 watts 😂

These systems were great, not enough power to annoy the neighbours (much) but a vast improvement over built in tv speakers 😎

Those things were everywhere! Perfect for an apartment or town house though... You can add some boom to your movies and not rattle the neighbors walls like a proper sub.

or a pair of 6-1/2 inch bookshelf speakers for jamming to music. Bookshelf speakers in an apartment living have as much bass as dual 6-1/2 floor standing speakers or 10-inch standmount speakers in an average house living room.

The woofer / subwoofer thing is also confusing in the PA Audio world because they have these huge enclosures saying subwoofer on the back and in the end, the driver that is being used is a mid-woofer. If I’m not mistaken, I think Timpano and some other brand ACTUALLY makes PA subwoofers but the irony is that the guys who buy them put them in high tuned enclosures. Lol

My parents have had a somewhat similar Onkyo system in a box since shortly after Blu-ray was released. The included receiver has HDMI and the sub it came with has a 10 inch driver and a 75 watt amp. The whole system performs surprisingly well for around $500 back around 2007. I did have to replace the amp board on it in the mid 2010s as the next door neighbors house was struck by lightning. The only two things of my parents that were damaged was the sub amp of the Onkyo system and the furnace to their house. Luckily insurance paid for both. Sadly, the neighbor was far less lucky as quite a few things were damaged or destroyed at their place!

I remember in the later days at Blockbuster we started selling some consumer electronics, mostly Sony stuff, and had a HTIB setup. After being rescued from Circuit City by my old boss he asked me what we should do to actually sell the dang things, because nobody is going to Blockbuster thinking about purchasing a surround sound setup. Answer was easy - set one up and let people hear it. A little tweaking to the EQ and keeping it at a reasonable volume, it sounded decent and we couldn't keep the things in stock. The firework intro on Disney blurays worked every time. Just enough boom from that little woofer to get attention and out the door went another HTIB! For $200, they weren't bad and a LOT better than how everyone's nice new plasma TVs sounded!

Thanks for the video! I remember when my friend bought "state of the art" LG 5.1 system with a 6" sub and tiny satelite speakers. All shiny and new what produced base and surround sound. It was expensive, but all changed when one of his friends visited him and my friend demonstaded the system. That friend said it sounded horrible (he was true hifi person). I still remember when my friend said to me how can anyone say things like that. All what I can remember from the sound was that the bass was "impressive" at low volumes, but when turned up bass was heavily compressed by the system when the volume was turned up. Satellite speakers were "OK" at the time. Nowadays I would rather listen cheapest pair of bookshelf speakers. That system costed over $500 at the time. It was the early 2000.

I always knew they were weak, but not that weak. Thanks for posting as it provides valuable intel. I was gonna mention doubting my Paradigm's sub rating, but when I looked it up to share I see they changed the info on it significantly. Probably thanks to guys like you calling people out on their bs. I knew it was not 1000 watts. 300 seems more realistic. Now I wonder how bad Klipsch and velodyne lied.

This old types of speaker systems used 4th order bandpass enclosure that gives it a sound that appears larger than what the actual sub size is. It can sound like a 6.5 inch sub in a ported box but actually the driver is only 5.25 inch. Still have the Magiteq MSW-727 2.1 speaker from saudi I think but tuned differently than this denon as it has shorter length of the port so the bass is tuned 50hz and I don't hear any low bass. Pretty good enclosures for a 2000s speaker systems

5:53 that is not 18.5va x2. its 18.5v-ac x2. basically saying the transformer has 18.5-0-.18.5v outputs. this should put the rail voltage at + & - 26v dc.

A 5-1/4 inch woofer would play nicely with a 7/8 inch soft dome tweeter. Woofer for the bass and midrange (35 to 4500Hz) and tweeter for the treble(4500-20000+ Hz).
