Waldemar Januszczak explores the Rococo's descent into madness. When you spend as much time as the Rococo did having fun and escaping reality, madness soon sets in. The 18th century is seen as the era of frivolity and enjoyment, but in an age of such decadence there was also the brutish satire of Hogarth, the mysterious masked figures of Longhi, the anguish of Messerschmidt and the depths of Goya's macabre genius.

Hello, I'm a Visual Arts student in high school and I am currently writing a 4,000 word essay on how the Rococo movment has influenced a fashion collection. I have to read an unhealthy amount of articles and papers and it can get exhausting and unmotivating. Perspective, and Waldemar I want to express how grateful I am for this video series. Waldemar clearly shows passion for the topic and is an amazing story teller. Waldemar, your passion is contangious and makes me excited to learn and listen to you. Thank you for giving me motivation to write my paper and placing excitment in my otherwise unflavourful research process. The video is wonderful and infromative and makes me want to write. Please continue creating videos of the same nature, the heart and soul that goes into them dosen't go unoticed. Thank you!

I agree, Waldemar's 1400-1900's documentaries are the best of the best - the Rococo and Baroque are my all time favorites and as an artist I have learned more from watching these videos than from six years in college as an art student.

At 2:52:17. I wish Waldemar had shown one of the most arresting paintings I've ever seen. It's from Goya. It's rather obscure. It's part of the "Black Paintings" Goya had painted in the interior of his house. It's of a little dog, its head above this vast yellow space that looks like quicksand. It's the saddest, most terrifying portrayal of an animal I've ever seen. I almost cried when I saw it. To me it portrayed the emptiness of an indifferent, callous universe drowning us all, represented by a desperate, little dog. Incredibly moving is all I have to say. I need to see it in real life.

Love this series and Waldemar is just the greatest. I notice in Episode 3 that his narration audio track seems to be mixed way too low for the background music - right? Could (in theory) just be my sound bar acting up at least inside of the first 10 min or so of episode 3 I was unable to hear the narration well enough......

I can’t help but think that Marie’s sentiments were misconstrued in her realization of the “fake village”. It’s well known how much of a doting mother Marie was to her children. The village, as I’ve come to see it, was more realistically a humble gesture to her children, so that they may experience moments of a more wholesome, fulfilled upbringing.

Venice is more beautiful in reality than in any Canaletto painting. He did not add light - if anything he toned it down to suit moody northern tastes. It was quite strange how Waldemar’ own footage disproved his words.

Just an FYI, the wonderful music that accompanies the series is all Baroque, not Rococo which is lovely music but not as well known. And those golden statues aren't depicted with invented instruments; just poorly re-created ones, about as far off as all those Rhinos.

I wonder how much of the rococo finery and frippery, enchanted gardens, pleasure and leisure, freedom and happiness, filtered down to the ordinary citizen? Not much I suspect. Likely in their rude and harsh lives they had hardly an inkling of the joys of that lifestyle. But then history is owned by those of wealth and power.

I know that the official history never ever ever mentions this so I have no credibility and the most polite of you will say I have a good imagination but consider this, based on my assumption that you have watched this series of films about the Rococo age and style. Those big towers with the 'lanterns' on top were actually the disembarking points for airships - all those big towers that seem to have no purpose were actually for airships that of course never existed until that one year the hindenburg blew up then, like the space program was completely scrapped after such a horrible loss of life, no one ever considered using a motor on a balloon in the 1700s officially, they built gigantic palaces with billions of bricks with just horse and carts and trudged through poop covered streets as there were no toilets then either - I gotta say that it really doesn't add up to me - the idea that travel was a grueling ride through swampy forests full of bandits who hated the monarchy so much they murdered them en masse - sure they had horse and carts but this was the era on Benjamin Franklin, they weren't primitive or ignorant and this idea that the 1700s had sophisticated cities and castles that were only accessible by boat or horse just doesn't add up - the same way it doesn't add up that convicts managed to replicate 19th C Paris in Australia with nothing to start with but books (apparently all the raw materials were available and only labor was needed), the buildings are just too damn big for horse and carts even with infinite slaves which is why people seriously dispute the history of the pyramids, just not physically possible - airpower with balloons makes sense from an architectural point of view and is supported by all those aerial view maps of the time and if you watch you will see that Marie Antoinette has an airship tower overlooking the lake in her country village - Waldameer never even noticed it as his studies never allowed for the idea that the rococo used airships but whatever the truth is doesn't even matter to me as I will be able to paint Marie Antoinette's airship - but what if I am right?

Poor Marie Antoinette, people just have to find someone to hate, and she happened to be the target. Her Hamlet was a theme park. She was the Queen and she wanted to have her own theme park, how’s wrong with that? There were certainly more extravagant monarchs in history. By Louis XVI’s time, the French economy was not at its best, it wasn’t Marie’s fault that things were not right.
