In this latest FoF Mechanic's Corner, Ken Kellett gives us an update on the Standard J-1 Restoration. It's been a couple of months since the last update, and after a short spell working on other projects on the property, Ken is back at the J-1. Here he catches us up on the progress he's made on the fuselage cables, tail fin, cockpit instrument panel and other facets of the restoration. Check it out, and follow future restorations of this, the Bf-108, and other projects right here. Thanks!

Had a tour through Fantasy of flight in the late 2000's, and through the then mechanics shops. Lots of changes have been done since then, and your efforts to keep the existing collection flying and also to restore the planes in Kermit's possession are appreciated Ken. Since there are no blueprints and you are backwards engineering these beautiful flying machines, everything you find to return these planes to original is awesome.

Clincher wheels are still used on bicycles. The tire has a bead that when inflated catches the rim and will hold in the tube. I still build bicycle wheels, even with my failing vision. Lots of fun. Great content Kermit, keep it coming.

People with money, that have a passion(like airplanes,boats, ECT.) are generally not looking for fast. They are looking for quality. You can bet Kermit doesn't want to put his butt in a 1918 plane that was "kind of" restored to flying conditions. Great video.

Evening Mr Weeks and thank you for your update, question for Ken, I was amazed that you managed to find original period instruments for the aircraft, do you have to have them serviced and CAA inspected for flying? (I'm not sure what the US equivalent authority is over your side of the pond) Many thanks again for the update, I promise you, you are making progress.

Two questions about the tire/wheel set up. First, you have cross-pattern spoking on the wheels on the landing gear on the bench, but you showed another set of wheels with radial spoking...which is correct? Second, clinchers are pretty common...but hook bead tires are less so...is this perhaps what Ken meant?

@@KermitWeeks444 Dennis Connor's ideas on the America'a cup hulls were not original. The "riblet" concept was taken from the Benoist program. I've emailed twice and written once to you about this already. To recap, the hulls of the Benoist ships were combed longitudinally with a baleen comb. Before the lacquer had hardened, while still a gel, the longitudinal grooves were cut. The hull was not sanded or polished afterwards. The finish was left coarse.
@keepyourbilsteins

While the microbubble film induced by the "riblets" increased friction, they broke the surface tension and relieved the suction effect on getting All of the hull out of the water.

This is a recollection (so hearsay) of conversations with my late grandfather, Bert Peters. He moved to St. Pete around 1929. He liked fishing and boating so therefore hung out among handy people. Later he would run one of the prop shops at Drew field during ww2. I specifically recall him telling me about how the Benoist hulls were finished when the Americas Cup was a really big deal in 1986-87. I was barely a teenager, but found it fascinating.
