Hi there ,just a little tip from a old seaman, when using a needle scaler ,dont push it down,let it dance on the surface,that would make a better result. The newer Allison has a lockup converter and two overdrive gears to help with the 4:56 rear gears.

You did a pretty good job of repairing the corrosion on that rear frame. I'm just wondering why you didn't spray it down with Rustoliums rust encapsulater then primer before you painted it. Yes it would cost more but would go a long way to keeping the original and replacement metal for becoming a repeat of what you started with.

@kctyphoon3 жыл бұрын
I did my truck frame a while back. Few coats of primer, few coats of black paint, then a few coats of under coating. I even purchased special paint or enamel for frames but wound up not even using it for some reason. I think giving everything enough time to fully dry and cure before applying the next thing on top of it is a good practice, but who knows how much difference it actually makes. All new leaf spring hangers, all bushings, and new fuel tanks both primed, painted, and then sprayed with rubberized coating similar to flex seal on the bottoms. You’d be amazed how much crud and dirt is in the bottom of old fuel tanks. IMO someone should invent a filter you can use BEFORE the fuel tanks.
@mwilliamshs3 жыл бұрын
Vehicle rust is basically a non-issue in my area but I would've primed the frame before painting and painted the new rear crossmember before installing and oiled the inside of the tube crossmember.
@WaldosWorld3 жыл бұрын

I enjoyed the video just like I was doing it myself. That been said, as an expert in these kind trucks and a business owner, I can tell you for sure this bed won’t pass a DOT level 1 inspection due to the fact that you welded the cross members from pieces of pipes not a one piece which makes it unsafe for heavy hauling. Not sure what your truck is GVW but these cross members defiantly not going to pass a DOT inspection for commercial use. Unless the point for you repairing this truck just for personal use, that won’t be an issue. I would still be careful when using the truck for heave load. Thanks for sharing this project on KZbin.

Hey dude I enjoyed the video; however, since you took everything apart and mostly down to bare metal, you could have brushed on some rust encapsulator, or sprayed on some raptor liner after a coat or two of self etch primer, or rusty metal primer (the brown one). Then later on you can still spray the undercarriage with wax, etc to protect from New England winters, but I doubt any rust will make it through that top layer of raptor. Truck undercarriage would look mint too!

Bed liners are super durable, but water and salt usually end up getting underneath it, and once it does, it causes the metal to rust even faster because it holds the water/salt there. In my experience, oil undercoating once a year is really the best way to keep water and salt away from the metal 👍

Since u r a rust warrior like me I'll share this with u. My Pap worked at Ford in Ohio next to Lake Erie. A coworker drove a late 40s sedan in 60s. Pp asked how do u keep that car from rusting out with all the salt? He told my pap a good wash, dry then do this, 1 quart of any new or used oil, same with trans fluid, 1 tube or tub of grease, 1 or 2 wax ring toilet gaskets. Put all in a old pot, heat and mix. Then brush, spray etc everywhere under, in etc. For doors plug drains and fill with mineral, baby oil, trans fluid, or even melted Vaseline. Let sit for a week and drain and save for next year. This all costs less than $10 and will outlast anything u can buy for 5, 10 times as much. Alot of the waX has no oils or very little. The oil, fluid and grease is key to stopping rust permanently. I've used this method, my father's used this, neighbors etc. U can use on anything that gets exposed to water, salt, mud etc. I'm for saving these older autos. New autos are not same quality. Thin metal, barely coated. New ford's and others have rusting issues b4 they leave the lot. It's sad but that's the world we live in. Meanwhile a mid 90s celica is still rust free.

Good video Waldo. I would like to see if that rust does end up bubbling from underneath having not used a phosphorus-based converter or even rust-reformer prior to hitting it with the enamel and undercoating We are all experimenting here and 0 judgement until someone finds a definitive formula. I have spent hundreds of hours researching the definitive answers to the rust problem and am about to treat two of my rigs the following formula (Its a big issue up here in Alaska). As far as I can tell, the best products/sequence goes something like this: 1. degrease/scale/brush/clean etc. 2. Treat with Rust Kutter 3. Rinse 4. Treat with Rust Kutter again 5. Rinse 6. Make sure everything is VERY dry (sometimes I will use Isopropyl spray and whipe it all down just before painting just to be sure) 7. A coat of rustoleum rust reformer 8. A coat of protective enamel (Either one of Rustoleums protective enamels or valspar's anti-rust armor both of which are more durable in terms of penetration-stopping power) 9. Coat with the undercoating of your choice, I myself am going with ROLL-ON (specifically) herculiner. Be careful not to seal any pinch-welds or frame holes (for closed-tube frames) as you want the lanolin product to drip through these 10. Treat the frame rails with non-black fluid film using a wide-angle applicator gun

Good video I did the same thing to my 2005 2500 hd. That rear cross member is the way to go. Put grade 8 flange bolts on the rear shackles the ones in the kit aren’t strong enough

Those bodies are so easy to swap buying a clean used frame from out of state is another way to start fresh. Have it blasted (monument companies all blast on the side and their compressors and blast pots are serious industrial gear) to frosty white, prime and coat then swap over parts as you go. My 2000 Silverado was assembled from three+ donors where I used to work. These trucks are like Legos on wheels.

I'm going through this exact thing on a 2007 LBZ. Was fortunate enough to find a rust free box after searching for 6 months. Mine is a bit better shape overall but I've been slowly rebuilding it since Covid began. I had a spinning nut earlier this year in the floor from the center cab mount. The tack welds they put on those don't stand up. Good luck, these truck are worth preserving.

17:52 It's amazing what a little bit of primer would do to uphold the durability and adhesion of the paint. Especially a little bit of rust conversion primer..

I had the same 2500HD , same color but 01 with extended cab. Up in your neck of woods up in Maine. Back in 2010 I had taken the bed off and sandblasted it. Primed it with red rust primer. Also put anodes on frame. Because the primer sucked it was back with spotty rust within couple years. The waxy paint uncoat GMC puts on is resistant to sandblasting and had to be scraped off in some areas. Sold it off in 2014 after replace cab corners and rockers.

I hear ya on the headlamp in broad daylight. It makes a huge help. FYI, Lowe's has a neck lamp that has two articulated lamps. It is cheap and awesome

Your C3500 is a GEM (and your trailer is a beast) but I’m stoked for this flatbed build!
