All of the German guys I know paid on the first date & were perfect gentlemen as well. I think it’s actually normal that when a man cares deeply for you, he just wants to do nice things for you. Sure German guys respect women as equal, but they are never exempted from the power of love. They can get protective, possessive, passionate (though in a much more reserved way compared to the Italians). They are happy to treasure their wife like any normal man.

German men, at least those from my generation, were raised to be chivalrous, it used to be expected to be that way. I was taught to open doors for women, or to help them carry groceries and other heavy stuff, but it's true that some women feel offended by it, nowadays. So now I ask, "may I help you with your groceries", for instance. Especially elderly women will usually be happy to accept.

i think about the flirting thing its just that germans are a bit more held back and prefer to maintain boundaries where people from other countries are maybe a bit more comfortable with being more touchy with people. this can make germans come across as less flirty. but i also think sometimes german men are SO worried about being respectful and not making a girl uncomfortable that they don't realise you're flirting with them unless you overtly ask them out. i flirted with a guy all night, was basically sat in his lap, my friend even asked him what was going on between the two of us and he still thought i was "just being friendly"

Of course the personalty of a person is way more important here, than his nationality but in general I would say... Germans do less small talk than many other cultures and small talk is the basis for flirting. You can be interessted but you still need some artificial communication to lay the ground and if you're uneasy in these kind of conversation your flirting attemps are uneasy, too. It's often times seen as impolite to just talk to strangers let's say in a bar, therefore it's less likely for a man to do the first step here. However it's totally acceptable in a club or at a party. I would argue that the location and event is pretty important in Germany.

@@bibibello2181 Guess that's more a lack of opportunity than racial bias. There're hardly black people in Germany and of those many of them are either erasmus/ exchange students, asylum seekers (mostly from Eritrea) or migrants (often from Namibia). So it's not very common to have black colleagues or friends, circles in which you mostly find your partners. E.g. Most german men would prefer to commit acts of chivalry. But unfortunately german women tend to perceive that as belittleing and disrespectful. The phrase "chivalry is dead" is often used to express a sentiment that people are not as polite or courteous as they used to be, particularly towards women. The demise of traditional chivalry has been associated with societal changes like feminism and evolving gender roles, leading to a reevaluation of the role of chivalry in contemporary relationships and interactions.

If a guy invites me and we go to a restaurant, I would expect him to pay for the bill. Otherwise I would not except the invitation if I had any doubts about about that man. I dated a few German guys, but not one asked me to pay half of a bill. I like a man opening a car door for me, light my cigarettes, pays me compliments and don't go nuts if other man stare at me. If a man complimented me on my body, I never minded that either. I had a good looking body then and still do. I'm an average height of 165 and weigh 125 pounds. I forgot what that is in kilo. I married an American because the where easier to get along with and not so up tight. I loved the way I was treated by them. Another thing was, I never invited a guy in to my place to have sex. That is not the way my mother raised me in Germany. In clubs or bars I never approached a man, the approached me. I'm talking about Americans, not Germans. My first American husband turned out to be somebody I didn't know anymore after he brought me to the States. In Germany he treated me well. Here he became so obsessed with me, tried to tell me what I could wear, how to wear my hair. After a few years of that I couldn't stand it anymore. He became abuse too. So I divorced him. A few years later I met another American who had a bad reputation of being a slut puppy. I refused to go out with him. He chased me for 10 years. Then one day he came into the place I worked and I swear I don't know what happen. When he looked at me, and I hadn't seen him in about 6 month, Electricity crackled between us two, and it felt like I got hit by a lighting bolt. That is when I fell for him hard. He became my husband and he was so good to me and so romantic. At that point I knew we where meant for each other. I never regretted it. My beloved died from cancer several years ago. I became a widow and stayed one.

I'm not German, though I live here in Germany for about eight years. I'd say, I'd like it if a man was chivalrous to me or I'd like if he paid for my coffee or something. But I feel like the reason for it is more that I just don't want it to be awkward for both of us, hence I'd prefer a "traditional way". That and that I'm broke :D Apart from that, I've met both kinds of Germans here in Berlin - those who open the door for you and those who don't. And again, it's kind of awkward because you never know which kind of man you'll meet next time, so sometimes you try to let them go first and sometimes they try to let you do it, and in the end you do some kind of a stupid dance around the door :D

It drove me (German woman) nuts in Ireland and England how one person of the table got up to get everybody drinks (and paid for them). It made sense: Bar is crowded, don't go clogging it up with 5 people who separately buy drinks. Nobody was stingy or counting up if you actually also paid for a round. People noticed if somebody never pitched in though. But...I feel guilty and want everything to be just. It's not about spending on others but on getting spent on, when I am not sure that the round I'll buy will reach what the others paid. I will also flat out tell people, if i cannot afford a certain place. And it is perfectly fine in Germany to ASK about the paying arrangement beforehand: "I'd love to go. Are you planning to invite me or are we going to split the bill / i am going to invite you." I know other German women, who enjoy being pampered. I prefer to be seen as equal and want to be treated as such - including paying for my own stuff. I do really enjoy inviting people, if i can afford it (ice cream :D ) My husband earns a certain percentage more than me - i appreciate if he pays that percentage more in bigger expenses, but i will not haggle in a restaurant. I always offer to pay, when i can and he appreciates that. And i feel good that I could treat both of us. Since he earns more, he pays more often. When we dated, we usually split the bill (in clubs)or did a this time you / next time me (movie theatre)-way.

Who is paying for dinner is not that much about German men being cheap; it is about respect - and insecurity. There is one thing many people like to forget: Dating can become a power game. This is a fact, and it is nothing you can stop by just saying it isn’t. There are men out there (and women, although less), who start marking their territory by doing things that seem to be harmless, even friendly, but which are used to put the other in a vulnerable position. But even if that isn’t the case, and in most times and with most people it isn’t, this consequences can ensue, even if it is not intended. In Germany, it needed centuries, many struggles and a lot of legislative action, before women became legally able to open a bank account or to enter a job without their husband’s or father’s formal consent. Men became legally independent with their adulthood; women did not before their husband died, as a widow. Paying for the meal was not a question of chivalry, but of sheer necessity and vulnerability. A woman in a crinoline just isn’t able to open a door by herself; her clothes always get in the way. Guess why they wore such useless junk? Right, to please men. And when women became legally independent - this was only about the legal act; it took many decades more to actually enter the brains of people. Until now - I’m talking from my experience as a lawyer here - there are men who think a woman has to ask for consent about decisions, they themselves would come to without any thought about the opinion of their wife or partner. Even men who would consider themselves not to be sexist in any way, sometimes encounter thoughts in their own brain that come from this horrible past. The human brain sometimes is like a swamp: things sink to the ground, but are not gone; from time to time, they come back with a overwhelming stench. This is why “chivalry” was looked upon with distrust by the women’s lib movement. And today? You might say that this is not a problem anymore, so chivalry is not an instrument of suppression, but just a harmless and friendly act. And this is true - to a certain extent. But as human history goes: there is a development, and there is a rollback, and so on, back and forth. You will never know for sure, where in all of this mess your society, and more important, the person in front of you is at the moment. He might be a sensitive, sensible person, who just makes an old-fashioned, friendly gesture, but it might also be a predator who thinks to buy privileges over you by paying for a coffee. And many men are afraid their friendly symbolic act of kindness might be misunderstood as a trespassing of borders. This is relatively new development, so that field isn’t easy to navigate. Yes, there are men who are just cheap, but the vast majority just tries to find some rules to follow. In my opinion, the rule to split the bill for the first dates is one that can be used: Both act as equals, at least until they know each enough other to avoid misunderstandings. Opening a door is something you can do for everybody, regardless of their gender. Helping a woman to get into her coat one should do because of how ridiculously complicated female clothing can be (even a formal suit is ten times as comfortable and practical as any frock or dress). And adjusting a woman’s seat you should never do, as long you don’t work in the service industry. It is not a nice way to start an evening by wrecking your companion’s feet…

Thanks for taking the time to explain things in such great detail. I agree with you on some points you have made. Dating can indeed become a power game if one is unfortunate enough to fall into the hands of a predator or an emotionally imbalanced individual (this applies to both genders). I like your closing sentence of wrecking your companions feet 😂😂😂 I always appreciate a good sense of humour.

I recently had a first date with a German guy and as far as he said, he wanted to keep on seeing and get to know me. Plus, we are still texting everyday. The only thing that I would like to know is, he is not really asking questions about me (he’s asking but I’m always the one who initiate the question). Like how’s my childhood is like or something. I know it’s just the first date but I would really appreciate it if he asks more about me because I really like him

Hm, if they are genuinely interested they ask about you in general. One reason can be that some may be "slow" to ease into getting to know you. That can happen, that it takes more than one or two "dates" to spike earnest interest. Nevertheless do not engage in anything physical if you want a relationship and the guy does not give the impression he wants to get to know you. That is my advice as an older woman, who really appreciates German men. Of course if you want a quick "hook up" I am sure no profound questions are needed. 😅🙃🙂

As a woman who dated a German I offered to split the bill at dinner I always offer to split the bill because I don't like waiting for someone to pay for me like I'm needy, I just rather pay for what I ate, the guy I dated was surprised but was okay with it :) also he approached me for a date at a museum but then I said no and then I approached him for a date lol. I tend to date guys I approach more than guys who approach me, something about a guy approaching me can be a turn off unless I already like them.

It only really works in clubs/pubs in Germany if people are a bit drunk and open for it 😁 Yeah, German women are very much into equality and stuff, that's why they are into splitting bills. And yeah, many women here in Germany also don't like when you open doors etc for them. Too old-school, sexist, whatever. So that's why chivalry is dead here to some point, not just in Berlin.

I think in this video you can see at least one reason why it can be hard to date Germans: They're often being rather analytical, and they don't show too much sensuality (out of fear or habit or whatsoever), which actually is key to flirting, I would say. So it's even hard to find out whether the person is making an attempt to flirt. This is just my hypothesis haha, I'm German myself and I find it hard to date Germans, also because of the above 😅 No offense ^^

I think the power dynamics of "paying on a date" are rather important. Essentially, the one paying is putting the other into "debt" - not of a financial, but metaphorical kind. And German culture is very conscious of obligations - the German word for "debt", or "Schulden", is derived from "Schuld", or "guilt". Basically, each person on a date paying for their own meal allows them to treat each others as equal, without any obligations to each other.

@@kannot1 Well, the problem is how men approach the whole thing. Like, paying for you then thinking they own a piece of you. OR make you feel as if they're hoping NOT to have to pay for you,. That's an uncomfortable vibe! Lol. So really, I think equality has to seep into our cultures better, then there's no underlying weird feelings. I still feel strongly that women need to redefine our relations, regain perspective on what we're looking for with men. Confront our male savior/leader image. We're trying to create equal partnership in society, equal decision-making, equal distribution etc. essentially revise world society to reflect feminine values prominently. I'm not even sure men will ever allow equality. So women have to be talking about how to deal with that. Amazonian warrior kind of consciousness, to rescue our world. After centuries of patriarchy, undoing our own deep-set conditioning is job number one.

I lean more traditional because that’s how our culture is out in rural East Texas. But I don’t think the woman should take advantage of the man either. What I mean by that is if she wants to go out to eat constantly, it can add up to a super expensive monthly expense or if she always picks expensive restaurants then that’s also a costly monthly expense. Since I am a little traditional I also like cooking homemade meals for my boyfriend. I just say do whatever dynamic makes you happy. If you want to split everything equally than do so. If y’all both want to be traditional, then do so.

Many guys, particularly those well-educated and with good morals and a decent family background, honestly look for girls they can have a serious relationship with. These guys will not start anything, and some of them will even literally refuse to get kinky during the first couple of dates, partly also to test the girl. The idea is that if a girl is willing to kiss on a first and do some more on the second or third date, her self-worth and self-respect is considered as not being appropriate to be considered for a serious relationship. Serious girls, meaning, "marriage material" (no offense) know that too well in my experience. That is why very often, the same type of girls end up with the same type of guys, both on the lower end as well as on the high end. Very often, girls and guys meet at university and that is where relationships are formed. Very often, university-educated guys will look for university-educated girls. So the best way in Germany to find a quality guy is to enroll in university.

They are, actually :) But it depends on what you think is attractive. Germans are very masculine in their physique.
