Since playback singing usually require "feminine" higher registers from females they're mostly dominating the female scene so you nailed that guess. Usha is a breath of fresh air for us though, I always enjoy a rare alto female singer

Indian flim music has always preferred thinner high pitched voices because it suits the innocent image of actresses more. It wasn't till the arrival of Sunidhi Chauhan in 1999 (Mast female version do check it out) and domination in 2000's that the industry became more open to lower voices.That's why Sunidhi is such a legend.

Hey that’s so true, I complained this to my dad when he would say why I don’t like most of the music. I would say I never hear my kind of voice, I have deep voice for a girl. Usha ji, Rekha ji and Sunidhi are definitely some who made music more realistic.

Usha Uthup has always been in a very different genre than typical Bollywood so she did some songs in Bollywood during the 70s but the sing song feminine melody was dominating then and she couldn’t break in much. But in recent times, she has been recognised by Bollywood for her unique voice and alto etc..

Here's another perspective, Bollywood playback singing isn't just about what kind of voice constitutes traditionally female like characteristics but it's also about the actress playing the leading lady, Bollywood tries to choose singers whose voice register somewhat matches the voice of the actress so it seems authentic when they lipsync to the lyrics. Most of the Bollywood actresses don't have such a deep voice because that is very rare for women, the actresses are mostly soprano or have a slightly deeper voice.

Waleska got why you don’t see too many altos. Songs are usually depicted by young female actresses - there is some sense of matching voice but also the look. Deeper female voices tend to be for specific scenarios - seductive songs, betrayal etc.

2:31 - As you (Waleska) were saying, I think the lack of altos has more to do with what the Bollywood industry looks for in voices (sopranos), similar to what you were describing musical theatre voices to be. You do tend to hear more alto voices in Punjabi music and in songs that are more "sultry", which again is similar to what you were saying. Classical Indian music tends to have a wide range of voices, including lots of altos! 15:15 - Interesting that you mention English lending itself better to being learnt by Hindi speakers compared to Korean speakers because of the syllables intrinsic to the languages. I think it's actually more due to the fact that English is very prevalent in India because of the colonisation by the British empire, making it very commonly used in India. Whereas South Korea has remained relatively isolated from English-speaking countries (except the US army soldiers involving themselves with the conflict between South and North Korea). I say this because as someone who was born in India and was exposed to multiple Indian languages, I found it very easy to pick up Korean pronunciation when learning it (which I think would've been more difficult if I only knew English). Loving your deep dive into Indian music!

What I have noticed about these singers are that bollywood is all about songs, drama, and commercialization and money turnover.. So basically now a days they get singers who can make money for them . Usha uthup( singing skyfall) is a singer where she has sung for movies which was focused on good meaningful and appropriate music in a movie.. The transition between dialogues in emotion is portraited either by action or by music. Not like current times. Except some movies like rock on or rockstar or tamasha..

Also Why u guys haven't check out more of Lata Mageshkar songs.... don't go for her live performances, that time live performances were very minimal and those that are available are of poor quality. There was noautotune existing at that time and even studios were merely recording places there is almost no effects addition, if u want to say it like that, so check out original recordings of these legends like Lata Mageshkar, Kishore kumar etc., If u will go by only numbers u will never reach these legends.... cuz most of your viewers are from new gen, many of them never heard them or know them.

Usha uthup is famous for her charismatic persona who had one of the toughest, testing and quite sad journey as a singer with a tone and voice that was not just uncommon but one of a kind at a time when the likes of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Chitra etc. were ruling the roost in Bollywood and Usha’s voice was not only NOT sought after by music directors but was constantly sidelined and countless times discouraged by Asha Bhonsle to give up trying hard and wait for a time when there might be ppl open to her. Lil did these jealous ppl know that none of us wanted to hear Usha in movies but in her own albums cos she was more creative than many outstanding singers cos of the energy she gave off when she sang. She was a club singer to begin with and found herself singing, breathing in smoke and smelling beer and liquor at a time when women were judged if they weren’t customers but part of entertainment organised by the clubs for their clients pleasure. I have always hated the sisters duo lata and Asha cos of what they did to talent that wasn’t like theirs.
