He’s legendary. He took the Sufi sound to places you wouldn’t think of at the time in the 80’s like Japan, Holland, France, Brazil. The term “World Music” was coined after him. He was doing festivals when they weren’t even a thing back then My dad was a huge fan and so am I and God willing my kids will be too. Amazing! I'm so glad you've delved into the musical world of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. It's such a loss that he passed so young. Do look up, amongst others, 'Saawaren', 'Kinna Sohna', 'Sun Charkhe Di', 'Kise Da Yaar'. I could go on! He's sung in many many languages and had also composed some music for bollywood films. If ever there was one person I'd have loved to have seen perform live, it would be him 🙏🏼

something most people dont know about nusrat is he could sing 4-5 minutes in a single breath. he had like an 8 octave vocal range, he recorded entire albums in 1 take. done thousands of live performances without a single mistake.

“The Singing Buddha” 16th August is the death anniversary of the revered King of Qawwali who left for heavens for the recording of next unlimited number of albums. NFAK (born 1948), a member of Qawwal Baccho’n ka Gharana (the oldest in classical music) performed on his father’s chehlum ( Chehlum is a religious observance that occurs forty days after the death of somebody) for the first time at 16. Became leader of the party and later the doyen of Qawwali across the globe. His pure, heartfelt, soul-stirring renditions earned him UNESCO’s “The Greatest Musician” title, he is considered by The New York Times to be the greatest Sufi singer in the Punjabi and Urdu languages, and one of the greatest qawwali singers in history. He was described as the fourth greatest singer of all time by LA Weekly in 2016. He was known for his vocal abilities and could perform at a high level of intensity for several hours. Khan is widely credited with introducing qawwali music to international audiences. In the early 1980s. Khan went on to release movie scores and albums in Europe, India, Japan, Pakistan, and the U.S. He engaged In collaborations and experiments with Western artists, becoming a well-known world music artist. He toured extensively, performing in over 40 countries. In addition to popularising qawwali music, he also had a big impact on contemporary South Asian popular music, including Pakistani pop, Indian pop, and Bollywood music. Khan is widely considered to be the most important qawwal in history. In 1987, he received the President of Pakistan’s Award for Pride of Performance for his contribution to Pakistani music. NFAK mostly trained Rafat by talking him ti live concerts, hence Rahat has been doing live concerts from the age of 7. And if you remember, Rahat actually sang a big part of this song in the Nobel prize award show

This particular piece was about Glorification of certain holy figures in Muslim & Pakistani religious culture.

You mentioned similarities between the musical styles of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh during the larynx bit. Well, we weren't separate countries before the partition in 1947, and every aspect of our culture, music included, has been shaped over the course of centuries and, in certain cases, millennia. So it's not similar, it's the same; of course, there are variations stemming out of the various community cultures spread across the entire sub-continent, which is why Punjabi music is different from Bengali music, which is different from Hindustani Classical, which is different from Carnatic music, and so on and so forth. 2. Yes, the second singer is a young Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Good catch. 3. It's 'Nusrat saab', please, if you don't mind; not just 'Nusrat'. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is the Father (Musically) of Modern Music in South Asia... He's a Legend! People in South Asia to date remix his Qawalis and earn a fortune. Infact Jubin is living on Nusrat's qawalis. Almost all his songs are a remix of Nusrat's Qawalis!

He was a great master, no doubt. But the saragam and ragas come straight from Indian classical text and his music is rooted in that. It's Indian classical music to sing notes and give them akar.

Normally you hate the heritage and would kill people following the culture of Native India. After all basic sawara are attributed to Lord Shiva. The musical octave is said to have evolved from the elaborate and elongated chants of Sama Veda, based on these basic swaras. You persecute those people who cherished that history. And no your contribution is "equal"? Your country doesn't go beyond certain genres and styles in hindustani classical and your contribution to Carnatic music is zero. Pakistan was made bare 75 years ago. So attributing the music to Paksitan is like saying it originated only within last 75 years.

More importantly I find the claim of OP laughable. Nusarat was a legend but father of modern music in south asia? Maybe for Pakistan. But using the term south Asia is too much. A revival in Indian music took place towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Rabindranath Tagore composed unique songs which go under the name of 'Rabindra Sangeet'. Indian pop music is a form of music that emerged in the early 1970s in the Indian subcontinent. The genre blends Western popular music with classical Indian music, drawing from traditional folk music, India’s film industry, and contemporary British and American pop. So where this claim that Nusrat started it comes from?
