Singing is a part of Indian culture, we sing prayers day and night which reflects in our love for music, also we have never ending chain of festivals where we sing and dance, and when festival ends wedding starts 😂

You're seeing the oldest form of communal singing. Bhajans and kirtans are a form of devotional singing that is hundreds of years old - if not thousands. Sound itself has an aspect of the divine in Indian culture. "Om", the primordial sound, is considered to hold within itself the whole of creation. So unison singing isn't just part of the culture and tradition and history. Smriti (what is written) has always been far less important than shruti (what is heard).

0:09 oh yes ! 😂😂😂Tomorrow I am meeting my friends after months and the obvious thing we are going to do is have a compulsory singing/ jamming session and play antakshari in a park 😂😂😂😂😂. So it's not just limited to those who are trained in singing, rather we who are not trained, but can sing good enough and love to do so without any instruments. It's a cultural thing, Music is our way of bonding.

im so amused that you guys find these singing sessions so fascinating. This so common in india, I can at least attest to this for NE and North india (never been to the south). We recently had an office party and we had some musicians in the crew and they got their guitars and stuff everyone just started singing together. Idk if im right but one thing that i noticed is most of the indians are not tone deaf at least not when singing in group😂

We even have games for family events where everyone sings songs in unison. It's called "Antakshari"- We make 2 teams, the first team sings a song and the other team has to start a song from the last letter that the first song ends on.

This happens every day at my home. My father and my brothers and their friends. Just jamming together, having good time. They just love music,addicted to music, music makes them high.This is how they bond through music. Just yesterday my brother had jamming session with his friends at some random doctor's home. He didn't even know him. But just went there to sing for friends. My mom is watching their videos from yesterday right now. Music is in our blood.

Singing or chanting together is something that is taught to us since childhood. Most of our prayers are forms of poetry with definite metres or Chandas as it is called in Sanskrit & other Indian languages. The collective singing is reinforced in schools where we are taught patriotic songs apart from rhe National Anthem & the National song, which are sung at state events, apart from prayer songs. PS : please see a video of the SriThyaagaraaja Aaraadhanai to hear classically trained Musical stalwarts sing & play their instruments together on a mass scale.
