Growing your own produce is a wonderfully rewarding activity that many of our subscribers enjoy. We have been asked many times to do a walk around of Jim's allotment and he was kind enough to oblige. We have missed a lot of the best flowers but are just coming to some of the best harvesting.

What an awesome pair you are, Jim knows as much about gardening as you know about fishing, you are both extremely talented. Would it be possible, say next year, to do videos in the allotment showing planting through to harvesting , but not forgetting to include the church bells and ships horns .😂😂👍

Yep fishing and farming two of the oldest most ancient trades known too man. Up until then we were savages living a hunter gather lifestyle. Then we learnt how too harvest, farm and fish so we would never go short of food, especially during the harsh winter months.

Jim u r brilliant, I don't get it, even the council cut trees & bushes & spray weed killer in the summer month's! & then wonder why species of Butterflies r diminished its because they spray the nettles, or why hedge sparrows r declining! & hedgehogs Anyway what a lovely habitat u have made for lots of critters 😘 P.S I found a hedgehog with part of a plastic carrier bag wrapped around its neck like a garrote, strangling it, this was late at night so luckily I didn't live far so I managed to cut the bag away, then took the hedgehog back to where I found it, poor thing...... x

Yep same here Dave. My grandad had a typical, huge post WW2 council and the garden was massive, I think that was the idea of the time that if we ever had another war the idea was the masses could grow their own fruit and veg in their backI gardens, thus not relying so much on imported food from America. Anyway when I was a kid my mum would drop me up my grandads on a Sunday morning and I’d spend all day with him on his allotment learning from him it was priceless. When got too old into his 80s he gave it up as his knees and legs weren’t what they used too be, but I’d pick him up Sunday morning drive him up too my allotment where he’d sit with a cup of tea and pass all his knowledge onto me. I was shocked at how much I’d forgotten, but attained so much information off him before he died of heart failure in his sleep. My consolation was he never suffered, just went too bed one night and never woke up, the doctor said he was not conscious or awake just went in his sleep. What a way too go, not suffering in pain and discomfort of something like cancer for months or even years, only too waste away then pass. But you can’t put a price on passed down knowledge like that, things he learnt as a kid from his dad. Now my two sons 11 & 14 come up too my allotment and I’m now passing the same family knowledge onto them. Their learning how to grow, harvest themselves, my eldest has his own tomato plants in a little PCV greenhouse he has in the back garden and he’s growing some scotch bonnet chillies for when I make a curry, and yes their very hot indeed😂🥵

Nice one John - Good to see Jim again, as I know you said a while ago he was unwell. Hope he is fighting fit again now - please pass on best wishes. Lovely little allotment - Jim obviously works hard. Loads of Monbretia here in our back garden - looks lovely when in flower but spreads readily so has to be kept in check! Stay safe & well. 👍👍

Andy have you ever thought about starting your own allotment? My grandad bless his soul used too have a post war council house, thus come with the typical huge gardens the government demanded every council house has so the masses could grow their own fruit and veg just in case we had another war and the idea was the folk could grow their own, and my grandfather made his own allotment. Every Sunday my mum would drop me up my grandads in the summer and I’d spend all day learning how to harvest, when too plant, seed, when too pick etc. he stopped when he got too old but I rented a allotment and not long before he passed I would pick him up and he would come up too my allotment and pass on all his knowledge too me. Looking back it was priceless because he taught me so much before he sadly died in his sleep which obviously I was devastated but he was 86, led a happy life, including serving in WW2 in North Africa and the doctor said he literally went too sleep and died of heart failure in his sleep, my consolation was he didn’t suffer, the doctor said it was like going too sleep and not waking up, what a way too go, not suffering with cancer for 6/12 months then dying in pain pumped full of morphine. But that knowledge he passed onto too me was what he was taught as a child by his dad, so it was nearly 100 year old plus knowledge of growing and harvest. There’s nothing better tucking into a Sunday roast knowing that the cauliflower, beans, carrots, leaks etc are what I have grown myself. And the taste and size from the mass produce sub standard stuff you buy at the supermarket is like night and day mate. Just start off with a small allotment, hijack as much information as you can off the old boys who’ve been doing it years and I guarantee mate, on a Sunday morning there’s no better way too spend. I’ve even built a small shed with a couple of seats inside, my portable gas camping stove, for cup of tea, coffee then out comes the frying pan for a lovely bacon and egg sandwich all bacon and sausage from my local butcher, all locally sourced worcestershire meat, it’s just the best. And the eggs? Yep I have my own chickens, so the eggs are completely free range, organic free range as in my back garden, i only feed them on the highest standard chicken feed, plus they also eat and leftover fruit and veg from the allotment so you can imagine what the eggs taste like😋 sorry to waffle on, but I just thought I’d give you a idea.

There's a guy not far from us here in Austria they call the tomato-pope. He currently has 600 different sorts, and has grown 3,200 over the last years. He is said to have the largest tomato-seed collection world wide. Just thought I'd throw that in here, lol. I love tomatoes.

I love growing my own vegetables, so this video was right up my street. There were parts in the video I knew nothing about but the productive allotment was a joy to behold. I try to recycle all the food waste and compost the garden weeds and garden rubbish. Last year we suffered with very dry conditions for weeks on end, one thing I did to combat the drought that saved water was I put small flower pots in the ground next to the plants so I could accurately water next to the root it did save my runner beans. Thanks for posting I will be buying some rooting compost and giving that a try.

Yes john unfortunately on ,y allotment last year I had a severe attack of blight. I grew so much spuds I was giving them away too friends and family, then I dug some up and seen black patches of blight. I was absolutely gutted, because I’d grown so much and literally had to throw two thirds away. But this summer I had a good run, loads of spuds, no blight, I even mastered some carrots which are notoriously hard too grow, secret is to grow them separately in a pot of loose soil, something I’m learning off the older boys on the allotment who have decades of knowledge. I grew some lovely leeks, and cauliflower this year. At 43 I’m the youngest at the allotments but I think these are age old skills the younger generations are losing. Can’t beat it up there on a Sunday morning sitting in my shed, kettle on the go for a fresh coffee, tea and then a sausage, bacon from my local butcher all locally sourced meat and my own real free range eggs from chickens in my back garden who have the whole run of the garden all day. Plus the size and taste from my veg compared too that sub standard veg you buy at Tescos, sainbury etc is like night and day. Although I’ll admit Lidl seem too do the best quality veg if I do buy especially during the winter when it’s hard too grow on my allotment.

Firstly great video again, but really… jam then cream 🙄 nice to have an explanation as to why 👍🏼and a strong argument! But for me always cream then jam, when I was a boy we couldn’t afford cream so used butter instead and applied it as you would with jam on toast or a jam sandwich (butter first) so when once in a blue moon we opened the fridge and there was clotted cream it automatically replaced the butter, therefore cream then jam 🤩
