Ask someone if they can cut out a regular size piece of paper so they can put their body through it? The paper has to be in one piece and can not use anything to hold it together. Then tell them you can do this after they can not do it.
Go to the link below for the print out of the Walk Through Paper. Cut out on the lines. Make sure only to cut the 6 pieces on the folded part in the middle, Do NOT cut the ends. Then unfold and you will be able to walk through the paper.

in 3rd grade my teacher had her father come in and show this to the class, it was actually a profound lesson that encouraged me and many other classmates to think outside the box for the rest of our lives. if you encourage that mindset while teaching this to children, it can teach them much much more than just a simple trick

Good Morning @lvetteCerda, The walk through paper is more of a Mathematical concept. By cutting a long continuous maze like path in the paper, you have created “hole” that is apparently larger than the paper itself. We know that multiple rectangles can have the same area, yet their perimeter will be different. For example, a rectangle of 10 x 20 cm has an area of 200 cm and a perimeter of 60 cm. Similarly, a rectangle of 1 x 200 cm has the same area of 200 cm but a perimeter of 402 cm. Using the same concept, you have created a loop that is big enough for you to walk through. The area of the sheet of paper remained the same throughout the activity - the size of the paper was not changed at all because none of the cuts went all the way across the paper The original paper perimeter did not allow you to cut a hole that would be large enough to fit through. However, a new and much longer perimeter is created by cutting slits back and forth in the folded paper. The length of this perimeter is limited to how narrow a slit can be cut. The narrower the slits, the longer the perimeter, and the bigger the hole. By making all of these cuts, essentially you’re making one rectangular piece of paper into a long narrow strip that is still connected at its two ends. Even though the area of your piece of paper has not changed, you’ve now increased the perimeter of the shape that you’re trying to step through. This gives a person plenty of room to pass through. I hope this helps thanks Ken

@@IvetteCerda actually the point you make while doing this is why conservation is so important. The first time you show the size of the hole, small! Now show them the size of the paper you wasted making the hole. You will never have a big enough hole if you waste that much paper. Now show the other way, where you don't waste any paper. Now look how big the whole is. Don Herbert (Mr. Wizard) himself taught that to me, and I performed it at science programs in schools all across the US.

I am curious to know why it works? Is it because we convert the paper's surface area into its border? Like let's say we had a paper of the dimensions 30x20. Now if I am being very precise in cutting, we could convert this area into 20cm of breadth and 280cm of length(I'm not sure here, but I think that the breadth will remain same) and 2.8m is wide for anyone to pass through. Please let me know if my thinking is correct or nah :)

Good Morning Yuvraj from California, By cutting a long continuous maze like path in the paper, you have created a “hole” that is apparently larger than the paper itself. We know that multiple rectangles can have the same area, yet their perimeter will be different. For example, a rectangle of 10 x 20 cm has an area of 200 cm and a perimeter of 60 cm. The original paper perimeter did not allow you to cut a hole that would be large enough to fit through. However, a new and much longer perimeter is created by cutting slits back and forth in the folded paper. The length of this perimeter is limited to how narrow a slit can be cut. The narrower the slits, the longer the perimeter, and the bigger the hole. I have done it with an index card and was able to walk through. As stated above the narrower the slits, the longer the perimeter and bigger the hole. I hope this answers your question and thank you for watching. Ken

@KidsFunScience
@KidsFunScience Жыл бұрын
Hi MONIKA M, Well first I not sure what you teach, so a little hard on how to introduce this to your class if it was spanish. : ) But if you teach math, then this is how i would introduce it. A shape can sometimes be deceiving! Topology is the mathematical study of shapes and spaces. Topology involves looking at the shapes that result through stretching, transforming, deforming, folding and twisting. This clever mathematical trick makes a giant loop out of a single piece of paper. All you need is a pair of scissors. Have you ever wondered if you can cut a 8” x 11” sheet of paper wide enough so that you can walk through it. Give it a try and see if you can figure it out. You might need to use some mathematical skills and think outside the box. This is a very interesting activity to teach the concept of area and perimeter properties of a rectangle. The area of the sheet of paper remained the same throughout the activity - the size of the paper was not changed at all because none of the cuts went all the way across the paper. I hope this helps Thanks for watching
