It's wild that almost all the maintained trails and rec opportunities we do still have in Washington are volunteer supported through organizations like the Washington Trail Association. My condolences about Pogo, she seemed like a fun dog and it definitely wasn't a day you needed more bad news on. 12:07 Kinnikinnick is really cool. Name itself is from the Lenni Lenape language group, which then Europeans decided just what to call any of the various smoking mixtures that existed across the First Nations, along with so many different plants. Bunch of different bearberries, dogwoods, sumacs, and even tobacco itself at some time have called kinnikinnick because of that. That particular one is one of the bearberries, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi. Edible but incredibly bland berries, leaves that have been used as a medicinal tea but also contain toxins, kind of a dubious mixed bag. Funnily enough you mentioned it growing with the madrone, and it's actually in the same family (Ericaceae) as the Pacific Madrone.

There’s a slight chance that pogo will get a reprieve. We’ll see. Fingers crossed she’s currently in a shelter where they can’t adopt her out because she’s too aggressive. It’s possible that my dad will take her back in a few months.

Nice hike! Love the moss ID. Have you tried liner socks to reduce blisters? The last time I did the West Coast Trail (75 km), I wore them, & not one blister or hot spot. Never w/out them now

I’m not sure why I’m only just now seeing this comment. Yeah I’ve used liner socks in the past. My problem this day was I was wearing brand new boots. I haven’t had a problem with these boots since then, but if I do, I’ll go back to liner socks.

@@WalkswithMoss I need new boots as well, and I don't like the break-in process. I could tell you some horror stories lol
