I worked at Wanamaker's for the summer, when I was a senior in high school. They had terrific restaurants and at Christmas the center court on the first floor was crowded with people watching the dancing waters accompanied by the giant pipe organ. There was also a bronze statue of a giant eagle in the court and it was a meeting place. You would tell your friend to "meet me at the eagle." The last I heard, Macy's now occupies the building.

@TOON215 Жыл бұрын
Yes and yes... Thanks for commenting. Yes this area is very walkable. Many resources, entertainment and eateries in walking distance. This is the epicenter of Philadelphias Metropolitan area. However it is also expensive to live in center city because your paying for all those conveniences. But expensive to me may not be expensive to you. There are many neighborhoods in Philadelphia with many conveniences that are cheaper, walkable and only a train or bus ride away from Center City Philadelphia. Research the over 150 Philadelphia Neighborhoods to figure out which is best for you. Have a wonderful day!

@@chilypatsofia I used to live on Pine street just off Broad also worked on Locust. It's just a few blocks away from City Hall, but much more residential. So you'll get your bearings when you Google a map, the east/west streets in downtown Philly are mostly named for trees while the north/south streets are numbered starting at Front Street by the Delaware River. There are now a lot of large apartment buildings and flats in brownstones. I'm sure it's much more expensive than when I lived there.

I've lived here too for many decades and everyone I know always refers to it as downtown or center city. We'd go downtown to shop at Gimbels, Wanamaker's and Lit Brothers Department Stores and eat and wonderful Horn and Hardart (H&H) Cafeteria. BTW, City Hall is no longer the center of the city. It was when the city was first designed centuries ago. You can look up colonial maps. Then like most places, it just continued to grow, but had to stop at the Delaware River. So it grew West, North, Northeast and South. Due to this growth pattern, City Hall was no longer the center point of the city.

Advice for improvements to Center City/Downtown: revitalize the alleys with lightings and lots of restaurants/cafe's and bars. Move the 76ers arena to downtown. Big cities have lots of traffic. Downtown San Jose is further along in downtown progress, but Downtown Philly ain't no slouch.

I was in Center City last week to catch the FlixBus back to NY. Grew up in Philly and remember how exciting it was to explore Center City on weekends. There are so many vacancies now. About 80% of the restaurants I enjoyed pre-pandemic are gone now. The food court @ Liberty Place used to super packed and almost all the vendors were occupied. Putting the arena in downtown by Chinatown and Reading Terminal is one of the most terrible idea's I've ever heard of. For 1 the businesses would not be able to handle the crowds especially with issues in production, travel and food cost. Adelman is a brilliant wealthy realtor, but working side by side with a major BLM organization to me seems like he is trying to fail proof his project while the other gains a pocket full of finances. The diverse feel of downtown is what makes Philly. Catering to just the sports crowd when Philly is a pioneer city seems it can strangle the life out of tourism even the holiday traffic the tourist industry depends on. I watched people like him in California make many promises build big things that kills people with more taxes, worse traffic and bad clientele and borderline criminal buy-outs. Not to mention the raising of rent cost will force many people who called 'Philly' home, just to line a few organizations pocket books. I hope this idea is shut down.
