Manila, capital and chief city of the Philippines.
The city is the centre of the country’s economic, political, social, and cultural activity. It is located on the island of Luzon and spreads along the eastern shore of Manila Bay at the mouth of the Pasig River.
The city’s name, originally Maynilad, is derived from that of the nilad plant, a flowering shrub adapted to marshy conditions, which once grew profusely along the banks of the river; the name was shortened first to Maynila and then to its present form. In 1975, by presidential decree.

The current Manila mayor ISKO MORENO, an ambitious and hands on leader has numerous beautification plans and projects ongoing to transform Manila into a progressive, clean and green capital city!! 💚🇵🇭

I walked in Manila in Luneta Park on Tuesday, February 25, 1975 when I was on liberty. I was in the U.S.Navy, my ship the USS Blue Ridge LCC-19 was in Manila for a visit. I also walked along Roxas Boulevard, had a coke at the famous Aristicrat of Manila restraunt. Manila is my favorite city in the entire world. I was there on liberty on Tuesday, March 12, 1975. I toured the San Miguel Brewery, seen how beer was brewed. My Navy liberty times in Manila were great. I alway had great times in Manila except at the U.S.Embassy, that place I didn't like, they gave my late wife & I a hard time for no reason.

During that time you can purchase a donut for Php5centavos. I remember the Sprite back in 1998 was Php5.00 and there was also Php2.50, your 1piso back then can get you a soft drink and a donut. I remember when I was in Primary we could get Php 60centavos for the whole package of lunch. The good times were great, you're right about that one.

Funny story here, my dad’s parents went to Canada a long time ago and brought my dad with them and met my mom here. Years later they had my brother then 10 years later me. 7 months ago my dad decided to take us to visit his relatives in the Philippines, and I had a great idea to bring multiple jackets ( snuggles them ) to the airport without my parents knowing, once we arrived about two days into our trip I pulled it out of my luggage and wore it and started walking down the streets in Manila, there were many people looking at me weirdly and some giving me confused looks ( most of them were taking pictures btw ) my parents then decided to scold me cause they told me it was too hot and that I looked idiotic in them. XD

Wow you win the prize for best walking video, I have been listening to it while I did some work online, and listening to the sounds of the traffic, the children and people as you go from one town to the next was nice and educational...very nice job. Sometimes the simple and easiest approach has the best impact, although your feet must be tired. I will watch it when I get a chance from beginning to end, I don't think you did any editing.

Do you have an umbrella with you? You know as a Filipino, and 25 years of living here, I still can't tolerate the temperature, it's really hot and very humid. Walking such distance with that kind of temperature is very exhausting. And you know, little beggars in Manila are being used by syndicates, they intentionally put dirt and wear dirty clothes so people will give money because most people are religious and won't hesitate to give.

Most streets and sidewalks are litter free. Filipinos are famous for being clean. They shower two or three times a day and they smile and laugh so easily. In the Philippines, it is all about the smiles and hospitality. Although there are bad apples, the good ones compensate for the bad ones

Brin I have smiled a lot more in Manila than any other big city that I have been to when I was in the U.S.Navy. I have always had great experiences in Manila except for the U.S. Embassy, my late wife & I were given a hard & difficult time there in 1980 & 1981 for NO REASON. The U.S. Embassy staff there were rude to my late wife & I, they didn't like their own white AMerican & black AMerican men marrying wonderful Filipina women. Within the next 3 years I plan to return home to the Philippines which is my second country & live out my life there, I left my heart in the Philippines on March 30, 1981 The day that I had to return to the U.S.

Christopher O'Rourke Like most cultures, interracial marriage is not encouraged in the Philippines but once the family know you they will accept you as family. You have to earn their respect. Filipinos are very friendly. When they don't smile at you it means something is wrong. This is the only country in the world with abundance of smiles and laughs. Even under hardships or poverty Filipinos, young and adult smile a lot. And they make sure they smile with or at you and you have no choice but to smile back.

Very nice. I love Manila…or Metro Manila. It has so many faces. A vibrant, resilient place and people! The metropolis has been booming the past couple of years. So much construction, renovations, expansions going on- new luxury hotels, even bigger shopping complexes, world class casinos, swanky districts like Global City, Ortigas, Alabang, Eastwood/Libis, Greenhills and Rockwell. Can't wait to go back and see all the new developments!

Hello again, I enjoyed the walk in Santiago, Chile & now Metro Manila. I too once walked on United Nations Ave. back in November of 1986, when I visited some of my new in-laws residing nearby in PACO District. I loved my month long stay in country, where I also visited family members in CAPIZ, on the island of Panay. There, the countryside & rice paddies with farmers wearing conical hats reminded me of my tour of duty in Vietnam, back in 1970. By the way, you scared the daylights out of me a couple of times crossing the street in MM! You are one brave soul. I noted the locals still call out "Hey Joe!" to passing Westerners. Excellent content, I think you just about covered every aspect of daylight activities on the streets of Metro Manila. Good job!

Ledzz Go Well, it was actually or should i say "used to be" structured and quaint. Manila was considered as the most beautiful city in Southeast Asia and one of most beautiful in the world. But a horrifying event changed Manila's fate forever, when the Second World War happened destroying 80 percent of the city. Manila's identity and the cultural and historical identity was wiped out and it can't be returned easily. But right after the war, Manila slowly changed but become more 1950's-1960's contemporary city it gained its glory but not the same as before. in the 60's the original Manila people started to move into the newly built cities like Makati City while people from the rural areas started to emigrate in Manila.. In 1980's Edsa Revolution happened which made it worse because after that revolution people in Manila became abusive to their freedom and it resulted to the Manila we see today. Manila was like a pitiful city because it was left out compared to the cities like Makati City, Pasig City, Quezon City. Manila doesn't have the skyscrapers other cities have today,. Manila has more abandoned dilapidated buildings which were once part of the glorious 1950's Manila. Now theyre crumbling and just waiting to be demolished or hopefully restored. It's losing again the identity. It's a sad realization. Many people, even filipinos think Manila is dangerous because of its poverty and dirty streets. and they're ashamed to see it because it's the capital and its the face of the country. and they got annoyed when foreign people think the whole National Capital Region is Manila City. Nope it's not. I hope Manila will be better. Manila should improve to be at par with its neighbouring cities which are clearly better than Manila.

Best Philippines video I have seen. It brings back memories like the rice trucks with gigatons of rice all lined up. Also, I forgot how many zillions of kids there just run the streets all day with no school or supervision. Careful, they smile but like to grab things if they see a chance. I lived in Fort Bonifacio so seldom saw these areas. Great video!

You are looking at 2015. A lot of things in this video are no longer there now since the clean up started in 2016, Duterte's time. Streets were one by one cleaned of obstructions. Then in 2019, the election of new Mayor of Manila. If only this video is taken now 2020.

Marlon Elias Based on your statement that you are still hopeful for the Philippines.I won't going to argue with you but after seeing this video and compare it to other asian countries, i felt disappointment for our country especially from the filthy poor people here which they disgracing the Philippines from foreigners by doing filthy, uneducated and ill mannered things like sleeping in the public with their trash. Manila could had been better if these informal settlers were eradicated in the city. You should be feeling lucky living there in NYC because you won't feel such problems that some people felt here in the Philippines, I'm planning to migrate with my mom in either Japan or South Korea in the near future because i think these countries will going to provide us a better living life.
