Kuldīga in the pouring rain
Welcome to a walk through the beautiful historic old town of Kuldīga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023!
We start our tour at the town hall and stroll through the narrow cobbled streets with their old houses to the longest brick bridge in Europe.
The bridge crosses the widest rapids in Europe. Here, in autumn and spring, you can even cross the river on foot across its width of approx. 110 metres and watch the fish fly. The fish then try to make their way upstream. Kuldiga was also seen as a town where salmon could be caught in the air.
The spectacle of the rapids is best observed from the old brick bridge from 1874, which was one of the most modern bridges in Europe with its 164 metres and 7 arches on fieldstone pillars.
It was rebuilt in 1926, but this time in concrete and later resurfaced with asphalt instead of cobblestones. The lantern lighting with 6 cast iron lampposts was also restored.
