Judging by how deadly alot of those gates are I would have to say there is a lot of crime there. Some look like a fancy prison!

For minimal crime, it is indeed a form of prevention for them to guard their respective homes. and not all housing here is like that either. Every country has its own culture, I make sure it's safe here.
