From other crime podcasts, this is only one of many cases in this area and native American reservations which feel not right. And, the police and authorities act in a way which gives you the feeling they're trying to control information and push the truth they want people to know. Not the REAL truth. So, much corruption in places like Big horn and similar. As for Selena (RIP), am I the only one who thinks the story given by witnesses and investigators is NOT what happened? Is it possible Selena fled the vehicle and something happened? The way native Americans are treated by the law, sadly including their own people, is disturbing.

Wow. This is disturbing in many ways that I wasn't expecting. The quick "closure" of the case by the sheriff, the firing of the under sheriff after speaking out regarding the sloppy search done by the volunteers comes off as putting the blame on them. Then the addition of the father as the new under sheriff is beyond odd. I get the impression that it's "being handled" by the native community as the 3 guys were also natives. Maybe the father's new position was to placate the family. I can understand trying to keep all internal matters as simply that, internal. Was the father even in law enforcement before this? Just too many things don't add up, which is terribly too common in this demographic. My heart goes out to the family and I truly hope that they get the answers they rightly deserve. There are so many questions not asked or unanswered. For example, if Selena was so closely watched and her daily movements were heavily supervised by her mother, why didn't her mother return to the house, after she was done at the casino, to pick up her daughter? Even if her mother was gone longer than an hour, why not return to the house that evening to pick up her daughter? Were there text messages or phone calls between Selena and her mother that evening? Why would the mother go home and not check on her daughter until the next day when the aunt called? Did police search the house in question? Why did only one person get charged with child endangerment when the man living at the house was also an adult? Just so many questions that could bring forward more details to this case. Possibly why the case remains open. I hope the family hires a good attorney outside of their community to get records subpoenaed and help them get some solid answers. God bless.

Hi. Canadian here. One of the reasons why the rates are so lopsided, is due to the intentional self segregation that happens. The laws are kinda blurry with the indigenous people who have their own communities. Some literally don't let cops into them. It causes a lot of friction and makes everything take longer. When someone goes missing, time is super important, but people don't trust the cops, so they might not talk to them at all, or their evasiveness can create false leads. It's not a new issue.

After reading/hearing about so many missing persons cases over the years, I simply have great reservations about the quality of search and rescue personnel. I mean, these are just people. Warm bodies with eyes that MIGHT spot something. They're worried about being hungry and tired and getting back home in time for work. Their hearts are in the right place, but what kind of training do they really have? So many cases talk about how searchers went through the area. Well, they obviously were not properly trained or focused enough to find. It's not something that just anyone can go do.

It seems fairly cut and dry regarding cause of death. It's hard to argue otherwise, given the circumstances. Though, what makes this case ever more perplexing is the abundant amount of speculation and hearsay testimonies regarding the people involved. What's just as strange is the case being considered open? Why won't law enforcement release the records? Could there be more to this story? Do we know who is telling the truth and who isn't? What ever came of the blood test results regarding the one girl who was with Selena at the rest area? I think this case deserves a follow-up. What's troubling is just how flawed the investigative and judicial process is regarding this particular case. Hopefully one day, we have answers to these questions.
@virginia644

The police obviously botched this, but I think both explanations are possible. If she started drinking again to similar levels as the other girl in the car, then the logic of “why would she walk into the wilderness??” just doesn’t apply. I know firsthand that I’m one of those drunks who Irish-goodbyes and one time in college I walked all the way through a park surrounding a local reservoir without a coat in November to get home ~3miles distance from the bar I was at. There was no logic to it, and coming out unscathed was nothing but dumb luck. Was there frost covering Selena? Was she wearing grey/brown/black or otherwise landscape-colored clothing that may have disguised her among the sagebrush? Could the frost have masked the canines ability to search? (are there error rate studies for canines in cold weather or snowy/frosty environments?) The case for foul play also seems compelling. Mainly, why did the investigators quickly suspect Selena may never have been at the rest stop? Where did the blood in the bedroom that her purse was found go, and why wasn’t it sampled and tested? Were the kids ever questioned separately for their statements? What did they say was the reason for the argument captured on the Snapchat? Did Selena’s cell ever ping to location of the rest stop? If her autopsy did not have high blood-alcohol content, then did she ever try calling 911? When did the autopsy determine her time of death happened? Was it New Years Day or later? Did the police ever request a warrant for cellular/text records between the kids in the van? If they didn’t, why not after they suspected she was never at the rest stop? Why would they not investigate the communication between witnesses of a mysterious disappearance? They could have been communicating to get their stories straight and even coordinate dumping her body later. Was the van ever looked at to determine it really “broke down” at the rest stop (convenient, it seems?) and what the kids did to “fix it” on their own? Like, did they even have tools with them? The public isn’t entitled to an account of the policework of an active investigation, but the FBI owes it to her family to step in and investigate if this basic level of police-work was completed or not and offer the public some reassurance if there has been a proper or improper investigation, if they continue to refuse talking about it themselves. Thanks for covering this story! I vote for you visiting in January to document what the conditions and landscape looked like at the time of her disappearance, to better understand the conditions the search and rescue we’re dealing with.

@@MrBombastic302 yep, that’s another theory and could explain their apathy to search for her. So Selena's 11 year old twin sister hangs herself, her brother is killed by the police, her older sister dies in a hit-and-run incident. After her parent's divorce her father gets custody over her (why not the mum?), her father then (allegedly) sexually abuses her. Her mother goes off gambling away her money at new year's eve and drops off Selena at the house of some 20 year old's and expects her 16 year old teenage daughter to return home after an hour. I would have walked into the freezing desert three times over by then, if I had to endure this shit myself. Not saying that Selena had intentions to commit suicide but I find it hard to believe that she came out of this environment unscathed to the degree that seemingly irrational and potentially self-harming behavior would be so damn uncharacteristic for her, like her aunt makes it sound. Sober teenagers do the stupidest things and drunk teenagers have done much weirder stuff than climbing fences and walking into the wilderness. The only thing remotely mysterious is why her body hadn't been found earlier despite the searches but just look up for example the case of Geraldine Largay on this very channel. Much weirder things have happened when it comes to disorientation and futile search efforts.
