I’ve never heard of Omey Island before Derek. Ireland has such a deep rich culture. I need to go on my own adventure there someday

Hi Pete! Yeah I'd only heard it mentioned before and ended up in the area so went down to take a look. Great to see you here in the comments ;)

Hey Derek, excellent video! Thanks for the idea of the place to visit, looks great. Funny that you said it doesn’t look/feel like Ireland. For me, walking the coasts of Kerry with a fishing rod, this looked like a staple of the Irish coastal landscape. Only goes to show how personal experiences are shaping the way we see things. Have you heard about Whiddy Island? It’s a great place with a fantastic history. Might be an idea for one of your videos. I love the closing shot with the sunset, excellent cinematography! Keep it up, buddy!

Cheers Tommy. FYI I think you'd be grand setting up a tent over there too - lots of hidden coves and wide open spaces....and hardly any people ;) I have not heard of Whiddy island and just about to look that up. Thanks very much!

You made me laugh there, when you said at 1;18. Castaway on the beach. If you just has of looked too the sky as you were saying castaways there was a jet flying over.

Thanks for the video Derek. A couple of years ago I was looking to stay at the campsite nearby the island but all booked out. I read about Omey & it sounded very interesting. It's amazing how tropical it can look in the west of Ireland when the weather is right, I've been to Achill & Aron More island's & the water has been beautiful.

We’ve found some evidence that my family’s surname used to be Omey, and we know we came from Galway. I wonder if we lived there or very close by.

Where is omey island and how do you get there, nice video Derek
@DerekCullenOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
It's in Connemara, Galway. You can park the car near Claddaghduff and walk across or even drive across but it must be when the tide is out. Info at the carpark re the tide. :)

Is it OK to wild camp on Omey or is it frowned upon?
@DerekCullenOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Howya Bernard. Someone told me that parking up in a camper van is frowned upon. I'll definitely be going wild camping there in the summer and leave no trace of my existence as always. PS. In case you might be wondering, I imagine the northern side (right side facing out to sea) would be best/hidden or else maybe the small beach on the western side.
