Hey Folks. Thanks for watching. TWO things: 1) If you can we would love you to help keep the heritage railway world afloat! We have donated to our local line, if you don't have one we can think of no better than the Talyllyn Railway. their page is here: www.talyllyn.co.uk/support-us/donate 2) We had every intention of trying to replicate some of the iconic shots from the Original Film, but sadly owing to copyright potential claims we decided it would not be wise. So instead you'll have to put up with us waffling and walking as ever! I hope you approve. All the best, Paul and Rebecca.

As a follower of your lovely channel, lifelong fan of the Titfield Thunderbolt, and a member of staff at the Talyllyn Railway this ticks a lot of boxes. Thank You! Next time you watch the film, and get to the bit where the engine urgently needs water and the passengers all jump out to raid local farmhouse for pots & pans - then fetch water from a stream... this is based on loco Dolgoch running low on water at Brynglas and passengers raiding the farm there to carry water from the stream under the railway.

During my far-off student days I dragged the members of the University of Bath Hiking Club on a route march - entitled "The Disused Canals and Railways of the Former Somerset Coalfield" - which began at Sainsbury's Supermarket (aka Green Park Station) in the city centre and ended up in the bar of the Waldegrave Arms in Radstock. On the way we managed to call in for refreshments at the "Hope and Anchor" at Midford, the "Wheatsheaf" at Combe Hay and the "Jolly Collier" at Camerton. There's a superb view of the surrounding area from the top of the massive, conical spoil heap of Camerton Colliery, which opened in 1781 and closed in 1950. The flight of 14 consecutive locks at Combe Hay, on the former Somerset Coal Canal, are impressive even in a state of disuse. It's also worth walking through the mile-long, single-track Combe Down tunnel - on the former Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway - which is now part of the "Two Tunnels Greenway". Thanks for making and sharing your video compilation which brought back some very happy memories of the three years which I spent in this lovely part of north Somerset!

That was quite a route march! Not very many miles but your walk goes right across the grain of the country. Steeply up out of Bath then down into the Cam Valley then up again and down into Radstock. You needed all those pubs, I haven't checked but I don't think they are all still open! Was it while the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway was still open or did you get the bus back to Bath?

Quite a few " extras " for the filming of the thunderbolt were from Trowbridge & Bath.. I worked & lived in Trowbridge, in the 70s and a few of my work mates took part in the film, my workshop Forman, was a former Swindon works employee, who shunted engines around the yard and was also involved in the track removal on the Camerton branch, I have a photo of him and his son on the pannier tank engine, while on track-lifting duties..

I walked the Titfield portion of the line in 1998 and before I went I watched the film about 4 times and noted down the places from the film that I wanted to photograph. It was a beautiful summers day and amazing to see how many places had hardly changed. I found the remains of what looked like a platelayers trolley in some undergrowth.

As a Life Member of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society thanks for the link to our holding charities donations page, latest indications I have seen is that £100,000 has been raised, beyond the original target of £75,000 so now the target has been stretched to £150,000. Early indications are that some sort of service will be ready to run some time in August, but restricted and not as many trains per day as in a normal August.

All I can say is you are going to *love* it when you do the Woodhead line. All the tunnels are still there, and only 1 or 2 are closed (Being Woodhead Tunnel) and the only 2 Stations on the line with no remnants are Oxspring and Thurgoland. Penistone 3 and 4 remain intact, as does the first ever Penistone station. The yard still has coal shovels dotted around too. Woodhead, Dunford Bridge, Penistone are the three major stations on the line that remain fully intact. Hebden Bridge still has the platform embankment, too, and I know how much you like your embankments!

It's great you're getting out to make new videos! For many years I had confused The Lion on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway with The Lion on the King's Lynn and Dereham Railway, mainly because Kings Lynn got to me first when I lived there and got a book on the railway. So naturally I went 'Coo! Titfield Thunderbolt' when I saw Lion in the stock list. The confusion was utterly compounded because the engines were virtually identical and even the dates were more or less the same, give or take. This made for a very revelatory conversation with the museum in Liverpool. The King's Lynn Railway was originally an odd gauge, 5 feet I think, but was regauged, as was their Lion. I'm sure Lion was still running in the 1980's. Notwithstanding the date, it was definitely the oldest working loco at the time.

Your normal fine video was made even better with that viaduct in the middle of the wood lot! Did you notice in the overhead photo opposite the words "Cam Brook" a small bridge that looks like it crossed the old canal bed. The Medford canal basin also looks interesting, I wonder if it's man-made or they just took advantage of a natural basin. This line used to be a canal and it was _this_ canal that a certain William Smith - who lived at Tucking Mill (the building in the link posted, not where it is stated at the house to the left) - was engineering the canal when he noticed the rock strata that was exposed and this got him thinking. This encounter lead him to survey the whole of Britain and draw up the geological map that we are so familiar with today. William Smith is regarded as the father of English geology. Another great video and fascinating tea-time watching. I know the area well and you have left plenty for another video in the area. You could follow the Dorset and Somerset canal further south to Coleford. In Coleford there is an abandoned viaduct locally called the Huckyduck. The viaduct stands in the garden of a house belonging to somebody I used to work with. The footpaths in the area are generally well walked and easy to find and follow. The recent rain and unsettled weather has really brought on the nettles and brambles and you won't always be able to go on a walk wearing black leggings. Not if you expect to wear them again. I have walked a few paths nearer where I live in Shepton Mallet recently and they are much more overgrown this year than I have ever known. I have a theory that the Ramblers Association keep a lot of paths open because of the sheer numbers on their walks, particularly in the summer when up to 50 people and sometimes even more turn up. However not this year as they have cancelled all their group walks because of the pandemic. While other outdoor organisations are now starting to open up again there seems to be no sign that they are about to.

And once again, some wonderful stills shots (the tree growing around the viaduct is a dream photo). I do love my post-war British comedies, and The Titfield Thunderbolt is up there. I think it's wonderful you've been able to visit some of that film's locations. Thanks also for highlighting the needs of heritage railways. I think I may be in a position to contribute to a few of those.

Another enjoyable video. I think a fair number of people miss the start of the Titfield Th. when a parcel marked fragile is lobbed onto the platform. Crunch! I have a very vague and distant memory that the Post office went through a phase of heavy handed work at about the time when the T Th. film was made. Whatever, for me it is a great way of starting the film.

Hi Folks, what a fantastic channel! Craig Quinn referred me to you and most grateful I am to him for it. You have loads of videos but have you done anything about the Millers Dale Monsall Dale line in the Peak District? I did a bit of an explore around there recently and asked a question and he referred me to you. You are probably aware but it could be up your street and makes for some stunning Scenery! All the best, Paul

A film with a personal interest, although it seems a bit odd time wise. You say the stations closed in 1925 but i assume the line was still active till some years later because I recall my father saying he drove a train there when he was a mere stripling. I had better explain, his father was the vicar of Camerton just before and during ww2 and a great family friend owned the coal mines prior to nationalisatoon. So i suppose he had privileges not available to most. He also claimed he had a wonderful war being the only eligible bachelor in a village full of land girls but that is another story.😉

Yes. The history of the line is pretty complicated. The first opening was in 1882 from Hallatrow (on the Frome to Bristol line) to Camerton, for goods and passengers (though at first there was little of either). That branch was gradually extended eastwards until, in 1910, it reached Limpley Stoke, on the main Bath to Westbury line. The passenger service was suspended in 1915, though the goods (mainly coal) continued. The passenger service reopened in 1923, but was so unprofitable that complete closure to passenger traffic took place just two years later, in 1925 - so that's when all the stations closed. With the closure of that through passenger service (1925), the section from Camerton westwards to Hallatrow closed completely and the track was lifted. But the section from Camerton to Limpley Stoke remained open for freight, and as this video explains, survived long enough to be used for making that wonderful film "The Titfield Thunderbolt" (Ealing Studios 1953). The line had formally closed in 1951; but it was not dismantled until 1958. So it is entirely possible that your father drove a train at some point between Camerton and Limpley Stoke, because from what you say, he must have done this after 1925. Thanks for the titbits of information about your grandfather as vicar of Camerton and the family friend as one of the mine owners. Was he the vicar at St Peter's Church Camerton? That's an amazing building!

@@Martin_Adams184 I only ever went to the rectory at Camerton the once as a youngster when my grandmother took us for old times sake. I could not say which church, I thought there would only have been the one for the village. If there is a list of incumbents in the church, the surname is the same, so you could easily find out which church, always providing they haven't all been turned into flats as so many have in this country. I do remember there was a library in the rectory with fake books on the door and a pond in the garden with a fountain in the middle which my father used to tease his girlfriends, by turning it on when they were sitting on the stone mound in the middle. The mines were, as you probably know, owned by Sir Frank Beecham who lived in Camerton. His son Ian was my sister's Godfather but that is by the by.

I tried to match various scenes around the station with google street view where possible (and did comparison screen shots with the film for my own personal use ;-). There is a classic scene where someone cycles into the goods yard, but unfortunately the entrance is now a modern housing estate. An interesting evening spent, especially to see how things have changed since the film......

At 6.54 - if I am not mistaken, a nice example of Brunel’s broad gauge bridge rail being used as fence post and strainer, as it was widely on the GWR network after the gauge conversion in 1892. Still plenty of examples around if you keep your eyes open!

Paul, at Midford you said your were at Midford Station/Midford Halt. Aren't they two different stations? I spent some time looking for Midford Halt, and the man who owns the old dairy in Midford saw my daughter's "EDS" T-shirt and invited us into his back garden to look for it. A lovely chap indeed.

Thank you Paul and Rebecca from Midford - great presentation as ever, and all the more enjoyable in these difficult times. I think you may have identified the remains of the station you walked through as Midford Halt - but it was actually Midford station on the S&D. Midford Halt on the Cam Valley branch, of which nothing visible remains, was about 400 metres to the NNE, just on the Wiltshire side of the county boundary. It's astonishing that for a decade in the first quarter of the last century, this village had two stations!
