@@Pihsrosnec The closest I've come was back in the 90s when we had a true whiteout condition happen here. I had been inside for a few days so I decided to walk to my work place for a change of pace. Nothing like having snow and ice pellets being blown into your face as you walk along the road. At least the temps were not anything like they were facing.

@@bladerj Wow, Ok. Well thanks for your keen insight, but I was not referring to building in a Winter Condition 1 weather event, lol. I guess I should have clarified as I know there are many 17 year olds with permanent bong brain that might not catch your humor and take you seriously. So to elaborate, I was actually talking about the massive logistics, supply, and coordination it would take to erect such solid structures in a very remote and challenging place (even in Summer weather conditions can potentially change within hours). You’d have to bring in heavy machinery, builders, supplies, set up worker housing, dig water/sewage lines, erect electrical stations, set concrete foundations, etc. and all during windows of clear weather. As someone with building experience, I was merely surprised at the quality of the structures in such a hostile place. That’s all I meant to say. Thanks for your comment!

@@MrShortymac187 In the winter - Green and Purplish Aurora lights in the sky. A meteor streaking across the darkness every 30 seconds. In the summer, About 10,000 Caribou moving in herds together. We got that number because we took a helicopter out over them about 1000 ft, placed a grid on the helicopter window and took pictures through it. Each square had at least 15-20 caribou in it. It’s simply the most amazing place I ever had the privilege of being.

@teknotoast its not consistently like this - we had a bad stretch last winter and had a few storms back to back, but when i was there in 2006 we had only one condition 1 storm, and it lasted for maybe an hour or so. there are still plenty of awesome days to be doing stuff outside!

Trust me, you don't. Once had to walk 50 mts in white wind up in the Andes, visibility was maybe half a meter so you are blind, the wind is 100% deafening so no help there either and it's also trying to knock you down which is rather easy to happen because the noise also affects your balance which is already precarious thanks to the snow and slanted ground and this place looks like that minus the slant but way colder.

Wow ropes. That's nice. We didn't have ropes in 85. I sound like an old guy. Just the visibility in this vid would rate this as condition 1. Still during winter over we would go out in worse, in town or on flagged roads. No choice at times. Had to keep things working. The linemen deserve a lot of respect.

@caprican28 there are different requirements for different jobs, but basically you just apply and hope you get picked :) if you're there for summer its 4-6 months, for winter 6-8 months or so. and yep, everyone gets rotated, you can't stay more than 14 months at a time.

I remember a road trip in Saskatchewan where we had -45F temperature and a 35mph or more wind - thats a windchill of almost -90F. Close to condition 1 I guess. We were very warmly dressed, but the wind just seemed to cut through our parkas. Respect to these people, this is nasty weather.

So if you are not there for actual research and you are a janitor or repairman.. what are the requirement for those? I would imagine you would need a heck of a resume to even be a janitor in Antarctica right? About how long do most people stay stationed there and is there a waiting list? Do the janitors and other non scientists get rotated in and out of Antarctica or do they stay for a period of years?

@PhillipSargeant They are made by "Canada-Goose" in Canada. They are the standard issue parkas for the residents at McMurdo. There are a lot of counterfeits on the market. A real one will set you back about $800 U.S.D. but they are very warm, obviously. I would not recommend them for temperatures above 15f because they are much to hot.
