My first walking tour of my home town of Ramsgate starts at the Railway Station and continues to the East Cliff, taking in Ellington Park, Ramsgate town, the Royal Harbour and the Granville Hotel/Granville House.
Ramsgate is a small town on the Kent Coast, (the area is known as Isle of Thanet), very near Margate and Broadstairs. In the Victorian era, when people thought of seaside, just three words came to mind: Ramsgate beach Kent. Once an important military and naval base, Ramsgate has a fantastic history and lots of truly spectacular architecture.

Just to correct an error: Augustus Pugin didn't design the Granville Hotel as I mistakenly say around 25:22, it was his son, Edward, as I correctly say later on in this video…

Learnt a lot. More on the Pulhamite would be interesting because it is very special to Ramsgate and indicates the wealth of the town. I came up to Ramsgate from Deal for twenty years before discovering that it had a High Street, not just a harbour and beach. A town that tucks its High Street away out of view to visitors is bound to suffer financially. Unfortunately, like Dover, Ramsgate clearly suffered from some awful 1950's rebuilding of poor design and low quality.

Thanks for commenting: I appreciate it. I agree with you about the terrible rebuilding in the 1950s: the whole area around Leopold Street (the car park, Wilko’s, the Travelodge, etc) is an eyesore…
