Ely cathedral is one of the great buildings of this country. It always reminds me of one of my favourite children’s books, Tom’s midnight garden. When Mrs Plum was pregnant with our elder son we stayed near Cambridge and took a trip to Ely when there was 2 inches of snow on the ground and the Fens were frozen. Magical place!

MrGreatplum Oh yes. I totally agree. Fabulous. So hard to do it justice on a day's visit.

Can’t believe you have done Ely - I was going to invite you! I must have started following you shortly after you did this. The canon was captured from Sebastapol in the Crimean war and gifted to Ely by Queen Victoria in recognition of the local regiment. By the way, all VCs are made from the breach of a sister canon. Trivia I know but I thought you’d like it !

Such an impressive Cathedral and so familiar too as every time there are floods in this country we see aerial television news views of Ely Cathedral sticking up out of the surrounding flood water. A place I wouldnt want to live for the same reason but would love to visit one day.

Definitely worth a visit - but I guess it gets full of tourists in the summer. That would be a pain.

My (maternal) grandfather's lineage seven generations back is from Ely. They immigrated to America and had their children. Very interesting. I hope to visit one day. ❤

If they are anything like their Catholic predecessors from centuries past I bet a chunky donation would see you recording indoors lol. Thanks so much for the views. As a glassblower I just love the manual hand made nature of such a massive structure.

Magnificent building. A symbol of Norman power and occupation. My wife’s uncle (Fred Wilkinson) was the Canon of a Ely Cathedral and a meetings room in St John’s Church nearby is named after him. We have had family gatherings in that room which makes us all feel very proud of him and his work 👍

Me and a friend remade this cathedral in the game minecraft, there's a video up on my channel if you'd be interested in seeing it. The recreation is accurate to scale! :)

The cannon is a memento of the Crimean War. The government was left with 300 Russian cannon for which it had no use so distributed them around British town as war memorials. The Ely cannon is one of the few that were not melted down in WW2

I lived in Ely for a year. Lovely place! If you have time, you should visit Wicken Fen - it was the first nature reserve owned by the National Trust from 1899 and is now one of Europe’s most important wetlands. It’s HUGE though so take your walking shoes!

Amazing cathedral - pity they didn’t pay to go in as these cathedrals need financial support to help maintain them for everyone.

Do you have to pay to pray, I wonder!!?

Most cathedrals allow you in without paying to attend services, but good luck trying to prove it, unless you are a local 'regular'!
