A lot has been mentioned about electric propulsion for catamarans. Based on the current state of the industry, we are not there yet. @Russ Hawkins I like the Seawind 1160 Lite because it has an outboard motor (x2). Reason... you can eventually replace it with an electric outboard motor. It is my understanding that electric outboard motors are way more affordable and possibly easier to install than electric shaft drives or electric sail drives.

@@dyrectory_com The problem with electric boats is they run through the batteries too quick. batteries and the solar just arent efficient enough yet. Im sure they'll be ready to go in a few years or so.

BTW, Do you know if this is feasible, two electric outboard motors on the Seawind 1160 Lite powered by a 'hybrid' system of batteries, solar panels and some sort of generator powered by gas. And would you happened to know what type of generator would be suitable to recharge such a battery setup?

@@dyrectory_com Well from my research(I thought about going the electric route for a few weeks) even a hybrid setup isn't too efficient. Electric motors suck so much juice, for every bump up in speed the motor takes 3 times the energy. Its a lot more efficient to go slow but going over 4 or 5 knots and you are really draining rapidly. You would mostly just be running the generator after 20 or 30 miles and thats after spending serious money on lithium batteries. Im talking 40k ballpark. It also depends on what kind of cruising you plan on doing. If you're sticking to just island hopping in the bahamas it would work out better since you'd have some time to recharge and not covering so much distance between stops. Long distance cruising its pretty much dangerous to go electric. You dont have the range to run out a storm. Balance catamarans put out a video on electric motors, He explains it pretty well. Balance is a very high end brand so their system would spare no expense and even they said it doesn't make sense. the O'kellys channel also put out a video on it. I plan on long distance cruising so for now electric is out but It might be different in 5 to 10 years. Theres also something to consider when you're in a far off place and need help with your boat it would be vastly easier to get someone to help you with your diesel engines than help with a very complicated electrical system. As for a generator I would go with a DC fischer panda. From what I've read you'd want 2 in case one goes out on you. All said going full electric with all the bells and whistles (solar, Chargers, Hydrogenerators, dc generators, battery bank management systems, lithium) for an 1160 seawind is going to cost well over a 100k. Thats not including installation. I dont think you can even order a seawind without diesel installed. If you could you would have to find someone in vietnam to do it for you or pay for the diesel and switch it out later at a big loss. I spec'd a 1260 and the options get real crazy. Was like 15k for a watermaker that only made 6 gallons an hour!?! Sorry for the book I just wrote but I've been looking at this stuff non stop for all of covid 19 season.
