Opinions are clearly divided on this. Personally, I love the sound of the orchestra, and that it is so prominent, perhaps on account of being close-miked. The sound here seems to have tremendous "presence" and immediacy, and tiny details of scoring stand out clearly. Thank you for the upload. PS The Magic Fire projection was the best I've seen. Real flames always have to be a bit modest for safety reasons, and projections can be rather feeble, perhaps because they try to be naturalistic. This was a beautifully designed series of expressionist images which really caught the spirit of Fire, without being too literal.

While the vast majority judge these productions solely by their vocals, my focus is on staging. Of the dozen or more productions I've seen, both on stage and video, this one's finale comes closest to approximating what Wagner wanted. Well...excepting the horses. Why the heck are THEY still there? Even so, the synchronization between sight and sound leaves the others behind. My compliments to all involved. Also, it's nice to see a hunky Wotan with a youthful voice.
@susannevollmer23472 жыл бұрын
The valkurie scene .."what Wagner wanted.."? Not only the horses are wrong, also the walls around and have you noticed the make-up of the poor girls - funny valkuries - and absolutely strange behavior.

Am I the only one who heartily applauds when Wotan doubles over in grief? The bum got exactly what he deserved, even if poor Siegmund was part of the price that had to be paid. I know, we're supposed to feel tremendous sorrow and pity for the guy. but he himself was the cause of the evil in the world that caused his son's death and so much horrific misery to others. And how is this for chutzpah -- mmediately afterwards, by way of expressing gratitude to Hunding for doing exactly as he was told to do, Wotan throws a hissy fit and kills him. And please, spare me -- because I can already hear the clucking of you slaves as you bend knee to Dickie Dumbkopf (Cosima's nickname for Wagner, at least during certain times of the month) -- oy, there they go ,-- ,"But that's what Wagner wanted... cackle cackle cackle --Wagner wanted! -- cackle cackle oy... (Angrily muttering) The heck with what Wagner wanted, I got some of what he needs... (Takes a deep cleansing breath and returns to the world of memories) And yes, in response to my applause I always get a couple of nasty looks as the intermission lights come up, but at least they don't escort me out of the house, as they did late into an especially tedious performance of Tristan and Isolde. Tristan was in a word, awful and so yes midway in act three I couldn't contain myself anymore and found myself screaming "JUST DIE ALREADY!" Hey, if Jon Vickers could have the infantile temerity to attack some sick audience member who was coughing too much to his taste, barking out something like "shut up with your goddamn coughing already!" then we should be free to tell Tristan to die. Fair is fair, if they can scream at us, we can scream at them. And no,, they refused to refund part of my ticket price. Which is why, at the end of the next performance I attended, somebody found a toilet full of hardening cement in that Dress Circle bathroom.. (sighs) Going to the opera used to be fun. (Covers ears to block out the pain, glares down add June Anderson, reaches under seat for a bag of rotten tomatoes "You call THAT an E flat?" Please excuse me, I. hear that some vines in the Hsnging Gadens have been stripped bare, and I think Semiramide could use a couple of tomatoes

If only some enlightened person would actually take Wagner's concepts, and actually read his copious notes, as to what he wanted to see on the stage; and then use modern stagecraft and technology to make it happen; we might have a Ring for the Ages. Instead, we get drivel and cartoonish concepts that make us close our eyes and listen while we picture the real Wagner in our minds.
