You guys are taking an old fashioned 1960's vacation, when the vacation was the drive to a hookie destination. I go to Wall drug for the free water. The challenge is trying to find it. The workers don't even seem to know. As a kid visiting the Rapid Cities area, I remember all the billboards for places such as, Gravity Hill, Wall Drug, Dinasour Park, and Prairie Dog Hill. It seemed so exciting driving to those sites.

My memorable motorcycle trip in about 2008 to Jackson Hole was through the Bad Lands and a stop at Wall Drug. Looks as though the place has tripled in size since I was there. I also remember a farm of sunflowers within a few miles of the Bad Lands park. Lots of great things to see in the area, including of course, Wall Drug.

It was a Sunday morning in the mid 60's. We were on vacation in South Dakota and driving east pulling a small camping trailer. We drove all morning and saw no oncoming cars, no houses along the road, no service stations, no smoke on the horizon - nothing except See Wall Drug billboards. Of course we stopped and had free ice water. It was much smaller then - just a single building.

Funny, all the billboards. That reminds me of our travels from the east coast to Arizona in the late 60s. There were bill boards along the old highway in pretty much every state it seemed advertising 'The Thing' in Arizona. It was a cafe, giftshop that had some mummy or something on display.. I still drive past it from time to time, I've never been inside in all these years. It's still there and there are a few billboards out along I-10 on both sides of it still advertising.

A lot has changed, but I was there at night in 1973 while living in Hot Springs SD. we took a small trip to visit it, even back then you would see WALL DRUG signs in Omaha. We bought a big bumper sticker and put it on our 1966 SS396 Chevell. We also bought a sign and put it in the back window of our 62 GMC p/u. Thanks, Abby & Adam for this video .....Bob.

At 3:45 $4.47 for two donuts. I know it's a tourist trap, and yes I've been there in the 60's. I had one of those donuts and wasn't anything to remember, but I'll always remember Wall Drugs. We had a bumper sticker on our 65 Mercury from Wall Drugs. If I remember correctly they would just go down the street and stick on your car whether you wanted it or not!

Glad you're having a great time. Wall Drug was a lot smaller the first time I saw it probably sixty years ago-but there were still as many billboards. I agree, Abbie needs to go to Trees of Mystery. There is a KOA just a few miles south on the Klamath River. The jackalope is real! Our wildlife professor actually put it on a test. Guess he had a bit of a sense of humor. If you hit the redwoods, I can just see Abbie laying down on the Avenue of the Giants taking a picture straight up. It's OK it's been done a couple of million times.

We made our “rite of passage” to Wall Drug in the ‘90’s. As I saw you were headed that way, I was reminiscing about that trip and imagined Wall to be a town of 10,000 or so. I was shocked to see there are only 814 people there. Nine tenths of them must work right there on Main Street.

It is what it is as the kids say today. I remember one of our family trips out west when I was a teenager. The Eagles had just released “Take it Easy” and there is a lyric that says; “Standing on a corner in Winslow Az.” Well for hundreds of miles there were billboards saying: “For Men Only; Winslow Arizona “ , with a silhouette of a “woman” . So after hearing the song, I had to stand on “a corner in Winslow Arizona “ and it turned out that the references to “men only” was to a men’s clothing store 😂😂🙈. You gotta love “early marketing “

If you ever find yourself again passing through eastern SD, in the Sioux Falls area with a little time to spare, 40 miles north at historic Prairie Village you’ll find the Overby Brothers’ Foundry and Machine Shop. Original located on the Overby farm in north central SD, the building and its contents were moved by the Overby family to Prairie Village 10 years ago. The Overby brothers bought the entire contents of their machine shop from Sears and Roebuck’s 1911 catalog. The original Sears purchase invoice still exist listing the brother’s purchase from the smallest drill bit and hand tools to a South Bend lathe, Little Giant trip hammer, power hack saw, wood lathe, band saw, even the line shafts and the 6 hp Economy gas engine to power all the machines, are all still in the building and operational. I think you would find it worth the trip.
