Years ago, about 1982, I snagged an old '47 Buick Sedanette that had been sitting for years, great project car. Brought it home on a flatbed. It was light grey, with grey mohair interior, which was in very good shape. Paint was oxidized, but polished out nicely, as did all the chrome trim. All four tires were rotten, thus a full set was needed. Did all the usual 'tune up' work, new battery, hoses, the fan belt, etc. The engine was not stuck, and after an afternoon of coaxing and working with it, she sprung to life. Had to go through the entire brake system. Three on the tree. After a summer of work, got it roadworthy and had a ton of fun for the next few years. My kiddos were 6 and 3 at the time, and that HUGE back seat and floor area was like a 'romper room' playground for them. They loved it! That straight eight was still silky smooth the day we sold it. Wish I had it back.

They did run smooth; the long straight-8 crank was a monster and required two wrenchers to move it around. The 1937-8 Century was Americas first hot rod; Roadmaster engine in a Special chassis/body popular with the police and the engine also found its way into hot-rods.

@@privateprivate1865 It was so fun to drive. Had a huge steering wheel (no power steering) that took a little getting used to. No power brakes, needed to actually 'drive' the car and plan ahead for upcoming stops. Rode so smooth and comfy but all four of the original shock absorbers were worn out and I didn't have the funds to replace them, so it wasn't a 'rough' ride but a 'jouncy' ride. Drove it into the city to work many days, and wow, what a 'head turner'. And, of course, at the gas station, many folks were inquisitive and loaded with questions. No air conditioning, so summer driving was limited to the evenings or nights when the hot part of the day was done. Winter driving was always nice, had a great heating system...under the front seat!!!! like all Buicks of that era. The original AM tube-type radio still worked, and upon switching on, took a minute or two to 'warm up the tubes' before it would play. The car had so much character, unlike all the new cars of today....they're all the same no matter what brand. I literally bought it from an elderly lady who was the second owner and was no longer able to drive. She left it parked on her driveway under a huge elm tree for a few years. It was covered in tree sap and dead leaves when I bought it. Paid $400.00 for it, owned it for four years and sold for $1,800.00. Wish I had kept it, it's probably worth $10 to $15K by now.

Years ago there was a friendly old man that lived in my neighborhood that owned an old Buick with an OHV straight 8. I do not recall exactly what model the car was but I do recall how well it ran and how quietly. So smooth and quiet that you could only hear the subtle workings of the valve train and soft whispers of it's induction. Mr. Deason was his name.

The Europeans had some really cool straight 8s back in the 30s. ALFA took two 4cyl engines and placed them back to back eliminating the torque issues with the crank. In 1931 the ALFA straight 8 was a dual overhead cam Hemi head. (no flatheads) Displacement was anywhere from 1.5 to 2.9Ls. Those things screamed.

I really like the two door , pre war models. I am surprised that car is sitting there. That body shell mounted on a modern pickup chassis, would make a fantastic cruising car. He used it for pulling the engines out of his rigs at rebuild time, etc. I remember he used to turn the idle down real low and say, be quiet, I'm trying to count how many times the fan blade goes round. Lol I was about 12 at the time, but I remember how smooth and quietly that engine ran.

Arrrgh I hope that hornet nest was empty! The extra fuel tank is where the hooch was poured in. Delivery of the hot sauce on time was essential and a Ford V8 wouldn't be fast enough or handle at high speed with a 100 gallon load sloshing under the car.. Buick was ahead of the game in so many ways. I have a 1928 GMC, which is all Buick touring car underneath. The Master 6 cyl engine (about 300 Cu In) was the first to have full pressure lube, overhead valves, and roller lifters. It's very happy to idle around 500 RPM and chug down the road in high gear at 25 mph. (4 speed with granny gear)

@@wayneoakley1832 ... Just a little secret here... about 38 years ago I had to freshen up the engine because someone had done a clutch and never tightened the flywheel bolts properly. Cost me a small fortune to redrill the flywheel, bush the holes, add locator pins, and true the mating surfaces. As long as the crank was out we cut the rods 0.010" and repoured the bearings, plus got a set of piston rings. Rope type rear main seal (sourced by cutting one from an Oldsmobile diesel) and TRW rings via measuring and going through an old paper catalog. Would have done the head but couldn't find a head gasket. Too bad I had to do all that work because the engine has less than 10k miles. Runs like a dream!

Even back then, Buick was a class act. These would have been made at Flint, MI (Buick City, closed 1999), Fairfax, KS (closed 1987, Fairfax II still operates), Linden, NJ (closed 2005), or South Gate (closed 1982). The Flint, MI was the main plant and the other plants were branch plants that serviced different parts of the country. No VIN, can't win, no tag, can't brag. As others noted, hopefully the K5 Blazer is next up on the video rotation---and let's hope you get the VIN and the SPID from it so that the story can be told on it.

She was sold to a lady in Washington in September 1939 who gave her the name "Beauty". She was then sold to a man in Kansas in 1944. He never drove it and it sat in a barn until the 1980's it was then rescued with a stuck engine and over the next 10 years was restored and fitted with an engine from a 1948 car I'll put up a video showing the car with my 1952 Buick Roadmaster at a wedding in the UK. We played around in the Baldwin Hills behind the MGM Back lot where Gun Smoke was filmed. The area was the Chevron oil fields. Back in the 1960's no body cared.❤ To this day when I smell eggs with pepper on them it reminds me of this Dune buggy.neal the owner of the vehicle brought eggs with because. Sometimes we would hit cactus plants and it would make pinholes in the radiator.being old school. He put one egg and about a 1/2 a can of pepper in the radiator. Smelled like breakfast. The leak stopped then we had to fix the radiator costs. They would start to rot not the metal kind of rot.😅

I was in St. Augustine for a 3 night show back in May. I've always liked that town. Lots of cool features on that Buick. But, a minor correction. At 1:07 that is a hydraulic shock absorber. They can actually be disassembled and rebuilt! Changing out the shocks meant a front end alignment would be required,though. There are still companies around that will rebuild these shocks. And to show how popular that design was, my old 1961 MGA had the same set up! The later 'tube type' disposable hydraulic shock was also called 'airplane style'.

The right rear fender is off of a '37, the '37 had the gas tank filler tube on the right fender that stuck out of the fender like a piece of plumbing pipe while the '38 had a nice smooth door. Someone might have only been able to find a right side '37 fender to replace a damaged '38 fender. The steering wheel looks lie a '37 steering wheel, the '38 wheel's spokes dipped down just inside the outer ring, this was done because there were complaints that you could sound the horn on the '37s while turning the wheel and catching your forearm on the horn button. Many people had their steering '37's steering wheel changed to a '38. The '37 cars had rear leaf springs, '38 had rear coil springs. The dash is a '38.

This Buick is a ‘38, not a ‘37. The ‘37 has a finer grille, while the ‘38 grille has heavier and more spaced-apart horizontal bars.

Haha, thanks for sharing I wouldn't have known unless I looked on Google. I dig old cars like the next guy ,and I'm usually good enough to identify the brand when the olady asks me what it is without standing there drooling 😂

Cooling my heels in a McKinney, TX, hotel room this morning waiting until it’s time to head out for my 10:30 appointment. Ran to a line of hellacious thunderstorms on the way up from Houston yesterday evening and then got a call from the wife around 9:00 that the power was off with no AC in the house! Guess I picked a good night to be on the road…….😅

Loved this video. Brought back some great memories. A good friend of mine back in the summer of 76 bought one of these just after we graduated high-school. The guy wanted 800 he got it for 700. We new nothing of these old cars (he had a 68 I believe Dodge Dart GTS and I had a 65 Barracuda) but man we had fun with that old car and like alot of car guys back then had we known one of us would still have it. Some awesome memories, thank you Steve for sharing this one. P.S. I seen this in the background when you did the camaro video and was hoping you would do a video on it.

It’s a ‘38 Buick. The grille appears to be 38. Hood opening is ‘38. ‘37 Buick hood is attached to the side panels and both lift up together. The filler on the left is indicative of ‘38, and to my knowledge ‘37 Buick still had rear leaf springs.

Interesting. The headlights are mounted on the side panels. Then how did they do it on the 37?
@pjcalder
@pjcalder Жыл бұрын
@@MrGlenferd there’s two seperate panels. Panel that headlights mount to is fixed on both ‘37 and ‘38. Fairly sure the battery is mounted under the floor on ‘37 as well. You can see the battery tray mounted in the engine bay on this car as per ‘38.
