- Short History
- Completed in 1869 following a resurgence of Scottish National Identity in the 19th century.
- It cost £18,000 to build and was partially funded by foreign donors, including Italian leader, Giuseppe Garibaldi.
- Situated upon Abbey Craig, a volcanic crag where Wallace is said to have watched the gathering of the army of King Edward I of England just before the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.
- Battle of Stirling Bridge - 11 September 1297
- The bridge was the safest crossing but was narrow.
- The English recognised that they would be at a tactical disadvantage and delayed the attack for several days.
- An emissary was sent to negotiate but Wallace reportedly said “We are not here to make peace but to do battle to defend ourselves and liberate our kingdom.”
- Finally, on the 11th of September, the English crossed the bridge at a slow pace.
- The Scots waited until there were “as many of the enemy had come over as they believed they could overcome”. And the attack was ordered.
- Most of the English on the East side of the river were killed.
- The Earl of Surrey ordered the bridge destroyed and retreated, leaving a Scottish victory.
- The English had lost 100 cavalry and 5,000 infantry.
- The original bridge is believed to be 180 yards upstream. The current bridge was built in the 15th century.
- There are 246 steps to reach the viewing gallery at the top.
- Artefacts believed to have belonged to Wallace are also on display at the monument.
- The Hall of Heroes displays the busts of famous Scots.
