If your familiar was Chris Poland (Megadeth) he does a similar lick on peace sells after the first chorus. Great vid!

cool lick, i really like the more exagerated weirdness if you play a lick like this real slow, it lets the quircky notes shine out a little more :)

@Wallimann That's the magic of music, I just finished watching your video about religion, and I'm totally atheist, so I don't share your religious idseas, but that's magical about music, here religion, skin colour, political ideas, nothing of this cares, cause music is the only universal language...so thank you mr. Wallimann for all these awesome music videos and lessons

I don't want to be the teacher, but maybe I can help you. If you want to play Dorian you will need a minor chord to play over. Now that you have that minor chord you have 3 minor modes to choose from. Dorian, Phrygian or Aeolian. Dorian is the only mode which has a nat6. If you play that nat6, you play Dorian. If you play the b6 you play either Aeolian or Phrygian. All of theses modes could start or end with an A. So the indicator for Dorian is the 6th note of the scale, not the root.

If it is A Dorian, shouldn't it start or end with an A? I would say it is a G major scale with some chromatic alteration... but I may be fully wrong here, so any hints is welcome on that. merci David ;)

I believe that it depends which chord is being played as an underpinning.

has an a chord behind it, so it makes a A minor 7 chord at the end. because it is a A chord with a 7 in the melody.
@LeapingDodo12 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it be better to say that you are playing a A minor 7 chord with the 7 in the lead?

Guys thank you all for your answers. Indeed with the understanding of the Amin7 chord, all of it make immediately sense.

Here is my opinion. A Dorian is kind of II of the Gmaj-scale. What David is playing is the Gmaj-scale. Just 2 chrom. passing tones. So it could be A Dorian. But the chord behind the lick sounds like Gmaj7. If that is true - this must be Ionian. Dorian always goes with a minor chord. David? Your turn.

yeah, that is not what modal playing is. a dorian would be playing it in the key of a, not in the key of g. a lot of people misunderstand this. the idea is the intervals in the scale.
@Vercingetorix12 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness no! Starting and ending on the "A" is just a way of explaining the theoretical aspect of Dorian when in the Key of G (don't forget the F#). You may very well start/end your licks on the "A" or the other chord tones because it will sound consonant with the underlying chord, but you don't have to!

Complete idiot here. But based on the comments below, I'm gathering that playing in a certain mode is derived from the chord backing the notes...isn't that just another way of saying I could play any notes from the G major scale but as long as its over an Am7 chord it would be classed as A dorian?....And if thats the case doesn't it make the idea of learning modes completely pointless when all I need to know is the G major scale? Please help coz I'm very clearly missing something here! :)

Hihi - I must have bad ears. Okay - let's say it's a A Dorian lick then.
