I’m not surprised. This location had many concerns, from theft to brawls and employee turnover.

The Walmarts and Portland, Oregon closed down on the east side of town due to theft. There's a Target in downtown and who knows how long they'll stay open.

There needs to be a Walmart in Southeast and lower Northeast, where majority of the black DC residents live at in the City

When this Walmart opened in 2013, there was supposed to be one on Alabama Ave where the Murray’s was and the other on NY Ave where the Skylark was.

This was the location I used to shop at that was next to my neighborhood at NOMA. The traffic was terrible the location was convenient for me.

Walmart is a scummy company. I understand needing grocery stores east of the river, but they definitely need better companies over there.

I agree, I think the allegations of theft for closure are exaggerated. Theft is to be expected in urban areas. I think it closed due to higher minimum wage, rise in online shopping, and even though that NoMa area is heavily gentrified, still much of the new construction is incomplete or hasn’t started yet so the neighborhood has less people then there’s projected to be.

Wasn't happy about this, it was a short walk from my place to get to the Walmart if I needed something.

Seeing this video late, nice job. I believe that it was a financial decision to close that Walmart. That Walmart was somewhat unique it that it had a heavily trafficked escalator & elevator along with security guards, which i can imagine would add to the maintenance cost of operations. Also, there was a high number of vagrants that was always outside of the Walmart. I don't think theft was over exaggerated. It stayed too busy to not turn a profit. The cost of renting that space along with maintenance cost and low profits ultimately did spell the end for that location.

DURING THEIR CLOSING I TOOK ADVANTAGE OF SOME OF THE SALES OFFERS, ONE DAY I WENT AND SPOKE WITH SECURITY ABOUT THE CLOSING HE SAID IT WAS DUE TO LOSS PREVENTION I CAN BELIEVE THAT ALONG WITH OTHER RED TAPE, SUPER THANKS FOR THIS STORY 1 ❤ WASHINGTON D.C

$1M penalty for not honoring an agreement is pennies to Walmart. Poor mayoral leadership allowed them to open 2 stores in stable, middle-class areas within 1.5 miles of ea. other (Riggs Rd & also Ga Ave). East Gate, Skyland & NY @ Montana/Bladensburg shld have been the FIRST stores built, OR Nothing. Poor mayoral leadership allowed 2 stores in stable, middle-class areas within 1.5 miles of ea. other (Riggs Rd & also Ga Ave)!

💥💥I'm originally from Philadelphia PA but I live in the DMV area. I knew that Walmart wasn't going to be built on Good Hope road is like way too many loitering and crackheads drug dealer that hang around there especially at that BP gas station and other gas station across the street and all on the grounds of that elementary school. It's a lot of businesses leaving Urban neighborhoods in my hometown of Philadelphia like a lot of Wawa and 7Elevens are closing in mostly black populated areas in Philadelphia same in New York because of crime and looting drugs etc. That 7-Eleven by Minnesota avenue on Good Hope road recently closed down because of you know all of them junkies and loitering and crackheads that be around there. So I get why a lot of businesses don't want to move into predominantly black areas. When I first heard that they was quote on quote building a Walmart on Good Hope road in 2011 me and my coworker looked at each other was like what are they nuts. I used to work at that KFC across the street from McDonald's in 2009 on Good Hope road. I used to work at the Walmart on Capitol plaza and in the evening time when all the school kids would get off of work and all the hood people and ratchet moms that Walmart went from being quiet chill place in the morning time to just a zoo when 4:00 p.m. came I worked there in 2007. There was no way that they were going to build a Walmart on Good Hope road and a Walmart on East Capitol by Capitol heights metro station Your comment about whole whole foods is hilarious that supermarket is high. I brought 3 macaron cookies it came to like 16 dollars they were good as heck but man the price. I work at one of my jobs down Wisconsin avenue. There's a whole foods, down the street it's a Wegmans, Harry teeters, trader Joe's. You won't see any of those type of supermarkets in a black neighborhood. Black neighborhood get giant, Safeway, lidl and Aldi and maybe a shoppers food warehouse.

Think it was in July 2023 minimum wage was going to $17/hr. Soon it will be $20/hr to flip a hamburger. Economics minimum wage is what drives high prices, the higher it gets the more things will cost. Employees wages and benefits counts for 40% of gross income alone, then you have other overhead cost and expenses an owner needs to be creative to make a profit.

Walmart needs to be in DC area. Listen, when I used to live there years ago I use to wonder why they didn't have Walmarts and Target's! I'm like do they not realize black people live in this area just people in general! They finally put Walmarts and targets in those areas once I moved. But I don't think they should have closed it down. H street is very busy. Whenever I come in town to Union station we passed that Walmart

Have you ever thought it could be a combination of criminal activity, shoplifting, gangs, ect.???? Take accountability of one's actions if it fits any of these. Would you want to work there if this was going on???? And damn it, stop using race as the excuse all things that don't go one's way. Like I said, take accountability of your own actions and stop blaming other people. You make the choice you deal with consequences.

@@sandrajanney6403 no one mentioned race. Stop reaching. Right across the bridge in Arlington and Crystal City etc and even right on the MD/DC border...in Mount Rainier, Colmar Manor, Cottage City, Riverdale, etc...all the 7-11s are still there. Are you telling me crime, shoplifting, gangs and whatever else is permeating your brain cells are so drastically different in those areas vs DC to validate the dissolution of these stores? If you can tell me this with a straight face, maybe I would listen to your drivel. Something else is going on besides your narrative. Open up your feeble mind.

Walmart only built stores in gentrified neighborhoods… after the pandemic, gentrification is slowing and DC is becoming more chocolate here lately…. that’s a bad combination for Walmart’s image!

The truth is The only reason that one Walmart got built uptown is because it was built Directly next to the police station 😂 and the uptown one serves majority Black people too since uptown is the black part of NW
